Book excerpt: Excerpt from Review of the New York Musical Season 1885-1886: Containing Programs of Noteworthy Occurrences, With Numerous Criticisms, and in an Appendix a Survey of Choral Work in America Accuracy in the record has been my chief concern in the compilation of the programmes contained in this Review. The critical remarks on the novelties brought forward in the season are, as a rule, extracted from my contributions to the New York "Tribune" newspaper, of whose editorial staff I have the honor and pleasure of being a member. There is, however, considerable matter in the Retrospect which is here printed for the first time. The plan of the book is like that of its three predecessors, save that it has been extended to include, in an Appendix, a general survey of the activities of American Choral Societies during the period covered by the local record. When performances of novelties are credited to the Concerts of the New York Philharmonic Society, Brooklyn Philharmonic Society, Symphony Society, or Oratorio Society, it should be borne in mind that the compositions were, in reality, first heard at the public rehearsals for these concerts, held, in each case, on the afternoon of the preceding day. For valuable help in the compilation of programmes I am indebted to Mr. Charles F. Tretbar and Mr. J. H. Alpuente. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Review of the New York Musical Season 1885-1886: Containing Programs of Noteworthy Occurrences, With Numerous Criticisms, and in an Appendix a Survey of Choral Work in America The Philharmonic Society entered upon its forty-seventh season at the Metropolitan Opera House on this occasion, and signalized the fact by bringing forward two compositions which were new in our concert-rooms. They were the Symphony by Carl Goldmark, and the set of Symphonic Variations by Antonin Dvol'ek. These two composers are, thanks to Mr. Thomas and the management of our German Opera, as well known in New York as they are anywhere outside Of Vienna, and there has generally been little delay in giving a hearing here to their productions in the larger forms. The Symphonic Variations were announced by the' Philhar monic Society last year on the strength Of the publishers' 01 com poser's promises, but the season came to an end before the music arrived and a symphony was played instead. In consequence they had their first American performance at the summer concerts Of Mr. Thomas in Chicago. The Symphony was played for the first time I believe in Dresden in December, 1887; in April, 1888, Mr. Gericke incorporated it in one of the programmes of the Boston Symphony Society, and in October it was played by the Crystal Palace band at Sydenham under the direction of Mr. Manns. Mr. Thomas reserved its first New York performance for the Philhar monic Society. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Marching to the Canon examines the history of Schubert's Marche militaire no.1 from its beginnings, through its many arrangements, to its impact on dance, literature, film, and music. Marche militaire is Franz Schubert's most recognizable and beloved instrumental work. Originally published for piano four hands in 1826, this tuneful march -- Schubert's first of three military marches -- was arranged, adapted, and incorporated into new incarnations over the next two centuries. Its success was due to its chameleonlike ability to cross the still-porous borders between canonic and popular repertories, creating a performance life thatmade deep inroads into dance, literature, and film, and inspired quotations or allusions in other music Marching to the Canon examines the history of Schubert's storied Marche militaire from its modest beginnings as aduet published for domestic consumption to its now-ubiquitous presence. After detailing the composition, publication, and reception of the original march, the book analyzes the impact of transcriptions and arrangements for solo piano, orchestra, band, and other settings. In addition, it considers the ways the march was used symbolically, even manipulated, during the Franco-Prussian War and the two world wars, as well as the diverse creative uses of the piece by significant figures as varied as Willa Cather, Isadora Duncan, Walt Disney, and Igor Stravinsky. This study of the reception and impact of the Marche militaire offers a unique narrative illuminating the world that enshrined this remarkable score as one of the most memorable musical works of the nineteenth century. Scott Messing is the Charles A. Dana Professor of Music at Alma College, and the author of two works available from theUniversity of Rochester Press: Neoclassicism in Music and the two-volume Schubert in the European Imagination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward MacDowell was born on the eve of the Civil War into a Quaker family in lower Manhattan, where music was a forbidden pleasure. With the help of Latin-American émigré teachers, he became a formidable pianist and composer, spending twelve years in France and Germany establishing his career. Upon his return to the United States in 1888 he conquered American audiences with his dramatic Second Piano Concerto and won his way into their hearts with his poetic Woodland Sketches. Columbia University tapped him as their first professor of music in 1896, but a scandalous row with powerful university president Nicholas Murray Butler spelled the end of his career. MacDowell died a broken man four years later, but his widow Marian kept his spirit alive through the MacDowell Colony, which she founded in 1907 in their New Hampshire home, and which is today the oldest and one of the most influential, thriving artist colonies in the the United States. Drawing on private letters that were sealed for fifty years after his death, this biography traces MacDowell's compelling life story, with new revelations about his Quaker childhood, his efforts to succeed in the insular German music world, his mysterious death, and his lifelong struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Edward MacDowell's story is a timeless tale of human strength and weakness set in one of the most vibrant periods of American musical history, when optimism about the country's artistic future made anything seem possible.
