Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1937, is being re-issued now in response to recent events in the Middle East - events which have left many specialists trying to discern the region's future by looking to its past. The book explores the process by which Iraq was transformed from a 'remote' and neglected portion of the Ottoman Empire in 1914 to a political unit possessing all the machinery of a modern state. The growth of Arab nationalism in the region, the establishment of a provisional government and the search for a ruler all had to be attended to by the British in the mandated territory. Unmistakable modern-day parallels make this a fascinating book for Middle East scholars and followers of current events.

Download or read book The Shi is of Iraq written by Yitzhak Nakash and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shi'is of Iraq provides a comprehensive history of Iraq's majority group and its turbulent relations with the ruling Sunni minority. Yitzhak Nakash challenges the widely held belief that Shi'i society and politics in Iraq are a reflection of Iranian Shi'ism, pointing to the strong Arab attributes of Iraqi Shi'ism. He contends that behind the power struggle in Iraq between Arab Sunnis and Shi'is there exist two sectarian groups that are quite similar. The tension fueling the sectarian problem between Sunnis and Shi'is is political rather than ethnic or cultural, and it reflects the competition of the two groups over the right to rule and to define the meaning of nationalism in Iraq. A new introduction brings this book into the new century and illuminates the role that Shi`is could play in postwar Iraq.

In chapter two the following two points are discussed: 1.The appearance of the first Kurdish newspaper. 2.A general survey of the previous works on the Kurdish newspapers and periodicals. Book Marsh Dwellers of the Euphrates Delta

Download or read book Marsh Dwellers of the Euphrates Delta written by S. M. Salim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-01-07 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Salim, of Bagdad University, spent two years amongst the remarkable tribal peoples who inhabit the great marshes of the lower Euphrates. He describes their social and economic organization and discusses on the one hand the process by which people with bedouin traditions and values have adapted themselves to different and difficult conditions, and on the other the effects upon them of submission to the central government and the modernisation of their modes of life that has resulted from it. His account offers a fascinating study of people living in an unusual environment, and will be of value to the anthropologist and ethnologist for its precise ethnography. At the same time, as one of the few detailed studies of the changes now being wrought on such a large scale by modern economic and political forces, it has real importance for the general student of contemporary Middle Eastern affairs.

Book Ottoman Land Reform in the Province of Baghdad

Download or read book Ottoman Land Reform in the Province of Baghdad written by Keiko Kiyotaki and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ottoman Land Reform in the Province of Baghdad, Keiko Kiyotaki traces the Ottoman reforms of tax farming and land tenure and establishes that their effects were the key ingredients of agricultural progress. These modernizing reforms are shown to be effective because they were compatible with local customs and tribal traditions, which the Ottoman governors worked to preserve. Ottoman rule in Iraq has previously been considered oppressive and blamed with failure to develop the country. Since the British mandate government’s land and tax policies were little examined, the Ottoman legacy has been left unidentified. This book proves that Ottoman land reforms led to increases in agricultural production and tax revenue, while the hasty reforms enacted by the mandate government ignoring indigenous customs caused new agricultural and land problems.
