Download or read book Review of the Baptismal Controversy Classic Reprint written by J. B. Mozley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Review of the Baptismal Controversy The Baptismal Controversy was the controversy of the first half of this century. It produced treatises from a succession of writers, - Archbishop Laurence, Bishop Mant, Mr. Biddulph, Mr. Faber, Bishop Bethell, Dr. Pusey, Dr. Goode, Archdeacon Wilberforce, and others. It came to a head in the Gorham trial, and has since dropped. A review of a field of past controversy, and an attempt to arrive at a judgment upon it, may not be without use to the theological reader. A controversy, if we collect the strong points and reasonable admissions of the different writers in it, has sometimes a force and value as a whole beyond the separate works of which it is composed; the different works taken together tending to establish a conclusion which is not proved in any one of them singly. In the present controversy Archbishop Laurence and Bishop Bethell, on the one hand, admit that all infants are not regenerate in baptism in the sense, claimed for that term, of actual goodness. On the other hand, Dr. Pusey and Mr. Faber, both disciples of antiquity, claim that sense for this term. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Baptismal Controversy: Its Exceeding Sinfulness If the necessity of debate is not inherent in the ordinance, then the strife began in sin and has been perpetuated in sin. Perhaps neither party in the strife would seriously affirm that the real causes of the issues were enclosed within the ordinance itself, as that would be a reflection on the wisdom of the Lawgiver but they would mutually criminate each other with being the cause Of the strife. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates that believer's baptism did not simply disappear after the apostolic era, but continued to be the accepted practice for centuries. Infant baptism became part of ecclesiastical practice gradually, apart from apostolic injunction. For this reason it must be called into question and rejected as a suitable practice for Christian churches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Baptismal Regeneration Controversy: Considered in Five Lectures Delivered in 1843, at the New School Rooms, Queen Street, Woolwich Scarcely another subject can be found so deci dedly influential on religious society, in the present age, as this of Baptismal Regeneration. By the wide separation between Romanists and Protestants, the latter, since the reformation, have appeared, to themselves at least, free from this elementary dogma Of the former. The last few years have brought to light much that has a tendency to diminish this self-esteem and to urge, on all who love the truth, a careful revision of prevalent systems by a calm, and direct appeal to the New Testament. By this means it is thought that all parties will best attain the conformity to divine law, which each professes to seek; and so far only, as their conformity to divine law is attained, will their unity and useful ness be realised.
