Book Surface Damage in Machined Beryllium

Download or read book Surface Damage in Machined Beryllium written by Stanley W. Porembka and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of machining damage effects in beryllium was made. Surface damage is caused by twinning and microcracking as a result of various machining operations. Twinning is a result of surface working while microcracks initiate at intersections of twins and grain boundaries, at twin-matrix interfaces, at impurity particles, and in heavily twinned regions. These phenomena may be due to residual stresses in wrought products as well as machining parameters such as tool type, feed, and speed and depth of cut. The loss of mechanical properties due to machining damage is reviewed. Also presented is a study of surface damage actually encountered with machining of the shingles for the Gemini spacecraft.

Book excerpt: The memorandum summarizes current knowledge concerning the machining of titanium alloys. The memorandum deals with the following conventional machining operations: milling, face milling, peripheral milling, turning, boring, drilling, tapping, and grinding. The last section of the memorandum deals with chemical milling operations.

Book Magnesium lithium Alloys

Download or read book Magnesium lithium Alloys written by Paul D. Frost and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brief review is presented of progress in the development of Mg-Li-base alloys. By virtue of the Li, which has a specific gravity of 0.53, they have lower densities than any commercial Mg alloy. Li markedly improves the ductility and workability of magnesium. Since they have approximately the same modulus of elasticity as Mg alloys, about 6.5 million psi, the alloys have a high ratio of elastic modulus to weight, making possible rigid, light structures. No Mg-Li alloys are in commercial production. (Author).

Book Methods of Strengthening the Ultrahigh strength Steels

Download or read book Methods of Strengthening the Ultrahigh strength Steels written by William Robert Warke and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strengthening methods for ultrahigh- trength s e ls are describ a i cus ed. The objective is to provid the designer with an idea of t e prop rti s which can be developed by various proces es and th operating personnel with an outline of procedure The processes include the conventional quench and t per, martempering, Ausforming, prestrain a d r p r, pr cipitation hardening as it applies to special steel compositions designed for this purpose (i.e., mar gi g), and austempering. Included for each method is ou line of the proces bul ion of the chanical properties whic c n be expected, iscussion of ny limitations which the process may have, and if available, an explanation of the mech nis of strengthening. Book The Emittance of Chromium Columbium Molybdenum Tantalum and Tungsten

Download or read book The Emittance of Chromium Columbium Molybdenum Tantalum and Tungsten written by W. D. Wood and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compilation is presented of original test data on emittance, reflectance, and adsorptance of Cr, Nb, Mo, Ta, and W. The data were taken from the literature published during the period 1940-1959 inclusive, and as much of the 1960 literature as could be obtained. The following sources were searched: Chemical Abstracts, Ceramic Abstracts, Metallurgical Abstracts, Nuclear Science Abstracts, and the files of the Defense Metals Information Center (DMIC). An attempt was made to evaluate these sources of data according to the apparent thoroughness of methods and techniques as described by the various investigators. In many cases the descriptions in the literature are a summary of methods and results, and a complete evaluation is impossible. Curves are presented which appear to indicate the most probable values for the various conditions and materials. (Author).

Book The Use of Nickel base Alloys in the Rotating Parts of Gas Turbines for Aerospace Applications

Download or read book The Use of Nickel base Alloys in the Rotating Parts of Gas Turbines for Aerospace Applications written by C. H. Lund and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unclassified information is presented on the use of nickel-base alloys in rotating machinery for aircraft, missiles, and related ground-support equipment. Less emphasis is placed on aircraft propulsion units, because a large bibliography already exists for these applications; only recent developments are included here. Rather, primary attention is placed on auxiliary power units and starters for aircraft, ground-support equipment, and turbopump units for missiles. This memorandum is concerned primarily with materials. Because the operational parameters are vastly different for the various turbines, the choice of alloy for a given application depends upon the wide variety of mechanical and physical requirements demanded by the service conditions. In addition, a summary of present and proposed manufacturing and fabrication methods is included. (Author).

Book Compilation of Tensile Properties of High strength Alloys

Download or read book Compilation of Tensile Properties of High strength Alloys written by J. E. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tensile properties that may be obtained in highstrength alloys for use from -423 to 4000 F are presented. Representative properties are given for high-strength alloys of the common base metals having melting points from that of Mg to that of W. The primary purpose is to illustrate the upper limits of the yield strength to density ratios for these alloys within the range of possible service temperatures. The temperature and time effects are combined in the LarsonMiller parameter for 0.2% offset yield strength or 0.2% plastic creep strain for limited creep data. The time for 0.2% offset yield strength determination is assumed as 0.01 hr. This permits use of yield-strength data from tensile tests and 0.2% plastic-creep-strain data from creep tests in the same charts. The LarsonMiller parameter may not be strictly applicable for certain alloys. In some instances, the data are for current production alloys with standard heat treatments. (Author).
