Book excerpt: "A database of observations of contaminant and environmental quality data for the aquatic environment within the Fraser Basin was developed and loaded into the ARC/INFO GeographicInformation System (GIS). The study compiled available data from published, unpublished andelectronic sources since 1986. The two major data sources were the BC Ministry of Environment,Lands and Parks' (BC MoELP) System for Environmental Assessment and Management (SEAM)database and Environment Canada's ENVIRODAT database. Limitations in both the SEAM andENVIRODAT databases were impediments and resulted in a much higher level of effort thanwould commonly be expected. The utility of these data is also limited by the design (structure) ofthese databases. As a consequence of this, study effort was reallocated from proposed data analysisto increase the data compilation level of effort. Data compilation was terminated by level of effortand time constraints. Nonetheless, the final database is considered to contain the vast majority of the avaialble data." -- Executive summary.

Book Survey of Contaminants in Suspended Sediment and Water in the Fraser River Basin

Download or read book Survey of Contaminants in Suspended Sediment and Water in the Fraser River Basin written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to increasing public concern over the effects of growing urbanization and industry in the Fraser River Basin, in June 1991, the federal government announced the Fraser River Action Plan (FRAP). [...] As part of FIL4P, the Environmental Quality Program is responsible for providing a baseline of the environmental conditions in the aquatic environment and measuring the effects of major pollution sources on the aquatic environment. [...] The Fraser River study region encompassed the mainstem of the Fraser River between Shelley and Yale, while the Thompson River study region encompassed the area between McLure on the North Thompson River and Savona on the Thompson River. [...] The main tributaries entering the Fraser River north of Prince George are the McGregor River, draining the Rocky Mountains, the Salmon River flowing from the north and the Willow and Bowron Rivers, draining the Cariboo Mountains. [...] At Lytton the muddy waters of the Fraser are joined from the east by the clear waters of the Thompson River before entering into the long, narrow, Fraser River Canyon that cuts through the barrier of the Coast Range 03.

Book Recommended Guidelines for Wastewater Characterization in the Fraser River Basin Vol I

Download or read book Recommended Guidelines for Wastewater Characterization in the Fraser River Basin Vol I written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fraser River Action Plan has a key goal to implement a cooperative pollution abatement program to reverse the trend of environmental degradation in the Fraser River ecosystem. The first step towards devising strategies to meet targets is to identify the contaminant sources and the loadings of specific contaminants by characterizing wastewater releases to the Fraser River and its tributaries. This development document defines the parameters to be measured at all sites and source-specific parameters to be monitored at specific industrial, agricultural, or urban sewage treatment sites. The report identifies industry specific parameters for 10 industry groups and provides recommendations.

Book Recommended Guidelines for Wastewater Characterization in the Fraser River Basin Vol II

Download or read book Recommended Guidelines for Wastewater Characterization in the Fraser River Basin Vol II written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fraser River Action Plan has a key goal of implementing a cooperative pollution abatement program to reverse the trend of environmental degradation in the Fraser River ecosystem. The first task is to identify the sources of specific contaminants through a program to characterize wastewater discharges in the Fraser Basin. The wastewater characterization program addresses major industrial and municipal effluents and point source discharges from lighter industries and agriculture. This methods manual was developed to provide consistent protocols for field sampling and analytical methods to be used in the quantitative assessment. The document outlines guidelines on field sampling procedures for chemical characterization, including sample collection, preservation, processing, and transportation; methods of measuring effluent flow rate; field quality assurance measures; preferred and alternate methods for chemical analyses; data reporting specifications; and collection, analysis, and reporting requirements for effluent toxicity tests. A glossary is included.

Download or read book Fish versus Power written by Matthew D. Evenden and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-05-03 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fish versus Power is an environmental history of the Fraser River (British Columbia) and the attempts to dam it for power and to defend it for salmon. Amid contemporary debates over large dam development and declines in fisheries, this book offers a case study of a river basin where development decisions did not ultimately dam the river, but rather conserved its salmon. Although the case is local, its implications are global as Evenden explores the transnational forces that shaped the river, the changing knowledge and practices of science, and the role of environmental change in shaping environmental debate. The Fraser is the world's most productive salmon river; it is also a large river with enormous waterpower potential. Very few rivers in the developed world have remained undammed. On the Fraser, however, fish - not dams - triumphed, and this book seeks to explain why.

Book Chemical Contaminants in Canadian Aquatic Ecosystems

Download or read book Chemical Contaminants in Canadian Aquatic Ecosystems written by D. M. Whittle and published by Canadian Government Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on those chemicals that persist in the Canadian environment and that are accumulated by aquatic organisms. It summarizes scientific information collected previously, with emphasis on Canadian research findings published in the last decade. The first part of the report introduces the general features of aquatic ecosystems and provides basic information on the fate and effects of chemical contaminants. The second part reviews contaminant related issues for the following geographic areas: Atlantic marine ecosystems including the St. Lawrence, Bay of Fundy, and general north-west Atlantic; freshwater ecosystems including the Great Lakes and inland waters; the Arctic marine ecosystem; and Pacific aquatic ecosystems including the British Columbia coastal ecosystem, the open coast, and some of the major rivers. All chapters discuss the major contaminant issues, important oceanographic or limnological features, biological resources, and sources of contaminants as well as contaminant trends, distribution, and effects. Current and emerging chemical contaminant issues and associated research topics are summarized at the end of each chapter. The third part is an overall assessment of current knowledge of chemical contaminants and their effects on fish and fish habitat, and identifies major current and emerging contaminant issues confronting Canada's fish and fish habitat.
