Book excerpt: The ontario ministry of transportation has access to a number of models for the analysis and/or optimization of traffic signal systems, freeways and corridors consisting of both freeways and signalized arterials. these models were developed for a variety of purposes and therefore have varying characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. the purpose of this study was to evaluate a number of existing models to ascertain what is currently available and what is required to support these applications. based on a literature review and preliminary evaluation, the following models were selected for detailed analysis: freq, corq-corcon, traflo, dynev, contram and saturn. the detailed examination indicated that while none of the current models fully satisy all major criteria, some models can be upgraded while others cannot. consequently, contram and corq were recommended for further consideration, as they were most suitable for incorporating the required enhancements. finally, specific improvements were outlined for purposes of both immediate application and long term development.

Book Freeway Traffic Modelling and Control

Download or read book Freeway Traffic Modelling and Control written by Antonella Ferrara and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-12 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides an extended overview of modelling and control approaches for freeway traffic systems, moving from the early methods to the most recent scientific results and field implementations. The concepts of green traffic systems and smart mobility are addressed in the book, since a modern freeway traffic management system should be designed to be sustainable. Future perspectives on freeway traffic control are also analysed and discussed with reference to the most recent technological advancements The most widespread modelling and control techniques for freeway traffic systems are treated with mathematical rigour, but also discussed with reference to their performance assessment and to the expected impact of their practical usage in real traffic systems. In order to make the book accessible to readers of different backgrounds, some fundamental aspects of traffic theory as well as some basic control concepts, useful for better understanding the addressed topics, are provided in the book. This monograph can be used as a textbook for courses on transport engineering, traffic management and control. It is also addressed to experts working in traffic monitoring and control areas and to researchers, technicians and practitioners of both transportation and control engineering. The authors’ systematic vision of traffic modelling and control methods developed over decades makes the book a valuable survey resource for freeway traffic managers, freeway stakeholders and transportation public authorities with professional interests in freeway traffic systems. Advances in Industrial Control reports and encourages the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.

Book Dynamic Framework for the Analysis of User Responses to Traffic System Disruptions and Control Actions

Download or read book Dynamic Framework for the Analysis of User Responses to Traffic System Disruptions and Control Actions written by Thomas Joseph and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major planned disruptions, such as those caused by highway reconstruciton, impose major costs on system users. The consideration of user responses is important in planning reconstruction activities and developing control strategies. A methodology is developed to capture the day-to-day responses of commuters to control actions, including supply-side measures (such as ramp control) and demand-side measures (such as information dissemination strategies). The methodology integrates a user-decisions component with a traffic simulation model for freeway corridor systems. Extensive surveys of actual commuter behavior in the North Central Expressway Corridor in Dallas were conducted to characterize the day-to-day dynamics of commuter decisions and to calibrate the user-decision models. The resulting data provide unique information that is of value to a wide array of travel demand measures and traffic operations measures, including IVHS.

Book Freeway Corridor Management

Download or read book Freeway Corridor Management written by Conrad L. Dudek and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1992 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to state and local traffic engineers, transportation planners, transit operators, law enforcement officials, public information agencies, and others responsible for the transportation elements of freeway corridors. Information is provided on the policies and procedures for freeway corridor management, and descriptions of a number of techniques and practices are presented. Traffic growth and increasing congestion on urban freeways require a comprehensive approach toward managing the complex elements of freeway operations. This report of the Transportation Research Board provides information on freeway corridor management strategies, the components of management, examples of effective applications of the strategies, and benefits of freeway corridor management. The management techniques that are discussed include freeway surveillance and control; corridor street surveillance and control; high-occupancy vehicle facilities and incentives; police enforcement and traffic control; hazardous material and other truck traffic restrictions; alternative route planning; motorist assistance patrols; motorist information techniques; and traffic management for recurrent congestion, for incidents, for special events, and for work zones.
