In view of the prominent role of the road widening projects as reflected from the breakdown of applications by designated project type in the EPD's figure, the environmental protection work should be greatly emphasized so as to avoid substantial environmental problems. To evaluate the environmental appraisal of the road widening project, Sai Sha Road Widening Project was taken as a case study. A desk top study by reviewing the documents and conducting an interview with an EPD official was performed. A detailed environmental monitoring work and site inspection were carried out. Comparison with other road widening projects was made. Finally, discussion was made for the identified problems concerning the public consultation, independent environmental checker, implementation of the proposed mitigation measures as mentioned in the EIA Report. Recommendations were proposed as practical and feasible as possible to overcome the problems.
