Book excerpt: Searching for answers in the midst of the sexual abuse crisis in the church, many blamed the clerical culture. But what exactly is this clerical culture? We may know it when we see it, but how can we 'whether clergy or laypeople 'go about dismantling it and putting in place a new, healthy culture? George Wilson has spent decades working with organizations to help them discover, and often recover, their foundational calling. He is also a Jesuit priest engaged in the lives of congregations. In Clericalism: The Death of Priesthood he brings together both capacities and gives his sense of the challenges facing the church. As members of the church, Wilson maintains, we are all responsible for creating a clerical culture. And we are also responsible for that culture's transformation. Clericalism aids this transformation by helping us examine some underlying attitudes that create and preserve destructive relationships between ordained and laity. After looking at the crisis and establishing where we are now, this book challenges us with concrete suggestions for changing behaviors. We are lay and ordained, but all baptized into the royal priesthood of 1 Peter 2:9, all called to spread the Gospel and do the work of God's love in the world. Ultimately, this is a hopeful book, looking for the restoration of a genuine priesthood, free of clericalism, in which we become truly united in Christ..

Book Ecclesiastical Offices Terms of Service Measure

Download or read book Ecclesiastical Offices Terms of Service Measure written by Great Britain. Parliament House of Commons. Ecclesiastical Committee and published by Stationery Office/Tso. This book was released on 2009 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Measure puts in place a legislative framework to enable the introduction of new terms and conditions of service (to be known as 'common tenure') for clergy and certain lay ministers in the Church of England. At present, the clergy of the Church of England can hold office in three different ways: (a) "freehold" offices as archbishop, bishop, dean or residentiary canon of a cathedral, archdeacon or incumbent of a benefice; (b) hold office under a licence from a diocesan bishop, and (c) engaged as chaplains or in other types of ministry, usually under a contract of employment, coupled with a licence from a diocesan bishop. The Measure retains the established office-holder status of clergy - while conferring upon them, for the first time, many of the legal rights enjoyed by employees. These include rights to stipend and housing, a statement of particulars of office, annual and other leave and continuing ministerial education. The legislation also specifies the circumstances in which an office can be terminated, and defines certain particular cases where an appointment can be made on a fixed or limited-term basis. The Measure enables regulations to require office holders to take part in regular ministerial development reviews, as well as introducing a capability procedure designed to address issues of poor performance. The Committee is of the view that the proposed move towards uniform tenure arrangements will establish a clear, consistent and transparent framework for the terms of service of the clergy as a whole and will give many clergy, for the first time, substantial employment-type rights. The text of the Measure is contained in HL 35-I/HC 270 (ISBN 9780104014400).

Book Developing Faithful Ministers

Download or read book Developing Faithful Ministers written by Tim Ling and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing Faithful Ministers aims to support the work of all those involved in supervision and training relationships within the Church. The Church recognising its call to serve God and the nation seeks to equip and develop its ministers to face the challenge of ministry in a society at the threshold of Christendom that is in a mission context. It is a context where both the general public and the institutional church have significant expectations of those in ministry. Indeed, there is now an expectation of ‘demonstrable capability’ prior to being licensed to any form of permanent tenure. The demand for more professional, demonstrably capable, mission able and collaborative licensed ministers places particular weight on the efficacy of the initial training relationship. "Developing Faithful Ministers" seeks to support those who find themselves in these relationships by offering both models of good practice and sustained theological reflection on what these drivers mean for developing ministry.

Book The Future Shapes of Anglicanism

Download or read book The Future Shapes of Anglicanism written by Martyn Percy and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To many people, the Church of England and worldwide Anglican Communion has the aura of an institution that is dislocated and adrift. Buffeted by tempestuous and stormy debates on sexuality, gender, authority and power – to say nothing of priorities in mission and ministry, and the leadership and management of the church – a once confident Anglicanism appears to be anxious and vulnerable. The Future Shape of Anglicanism offers a constructive and critical engagement with the currents and contours that have brought the church to this point. It assesses and evaluates the forces now shaping the church and challenges them culturally, critically, and theologically. The Future Shape of Anglicanism engages with the church of the present that is simultaneously dissenting and loyal, as well as critical and constructive. For all who are engaged in ecclesiological investigations, and for those who study the Church of England and the wider Anglican Communion, this book offers new maps and charts for the present and future. It is an essential companion and guide to some of the movements and forces that are currently shaping the church.
