Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Arctic Canada, Hudson Bay is a site of great exploration history, aboriginal culture, and a vast marine wilderness supporting large populations of marine mammals and birds. These include some of the most iconic Arctic animals like beluga, narwhal, bowhead whales, and polar bears. Due to the challenges of conducting field research in this region, some of the mysteries of where these animals move, and how they are able to survive in such seemingly inhospitable, ice-choked habitats are just now being unlocked. For example, are polar bears being replaced by killer whales? This new information could not be more salient, as the Hudson Bay Region is undergoing rapid environmental change due to global warming, as well as increased pressures from industrial development interests. A Little Less Arctic brings together some of the world’s leading Arctic scientists to present the current state of knowledge on the physical and biological characteristics of Hudson Bay.

Book Ringed Seal Pusa Hispida Population Trends Inferred from Genetics

Download or read book Ringed Seal Pusa Hispida Population Trends Inferred from Genetics written by Kyle Ritchie and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is predicted to affect ringed seals negatively. The first objective of my thesis was to assess trends in abundance of ringed seals using genetics. I used genetic profiles to estimate the effective number of breeders (Nb) and assessed relationships with counts from aerial surveys (Ns). I did not detect a relationship between Nb and Ns or a temporal trend in either variable when the entire time series was assessed. However, Nb fluctuated over time, with a negative trend from 1983 to 1994 and becoming stable from 1995 to 2012. My second objective was to determine which variables predicted Nb. My analysis suggested that spring rainfall, snow depth, and the date of fall sea-ice freezeup had a greater influence on Nb than the timing of spring breakup. This research helps address the lack of long-term monitoring data for ringed seals, while improving our understanding of population dynamics.

Book Monitoring Distribution and Abundance of Ringed Seals in Northern Alaska

Download or read book Monitoring Distribution and Abundance of Ringed Seals in Northern Alaska written by Kathryn J. Frost and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes results of aerial surveys conducted to determine the distribution and abundance of ringed seals (Phoca hispida) in the central Beaufort Sea off Alaska ... Specific objectives were to: 1) review and refine protocols for monitoring ringed seals by aerial surveys; 2) estimate relative abundance and density of ringed seals on fast ice in the Beaufort Sea during 1996-1999 and compare with data collected during 1985-1987; and 3) correlate observed ringed seal densities on fast ice with environmental parameters."--Page vi.

Book The Pacific Arctic Region

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jacqueline M. Grebmeier
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2014-06-10
  • ISBN : 9401788634
  • Pages : 461 pages

Download or read book The Pacific Arctic Region written by Jacqueline M. Grebmeier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-10 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pacific Arctic region is experiencing rapid sea ice retreat, seawater warming, ocean acidification and biological response. Physical and biogeochemical modeling indicates the potential for step-function changes to the overall marine ecosystem. This synthesis book was coordinated within the Pacific Arctic Group, a network of international partners working in the Pacific Arctic. Chapter topics range from atmospheric and physical sciences to chemical processing and biological response to changing environmental conditions. Physical and biogeochemical modeling results highlight the need for data collection and interdisciplinary modeling activities to track and forecast the changing ecosystem of the Pacific Arctic with climate change.
