Book excerpt: In 2008 the Committee for Culture, Arts and Leisure, commissioned a report into the 'Development of a Museums Policy for Northern Ireland' (ISBN 9780339602588). The purpose of this review is to provide a supplementary report to augment the findings of the Committee's 2008 report focusing, in particular on the economic and social impact and value of museums in Northern Ireland. The sector makes a contribution of more than £16m to the economy in Northern Ireland, provides employment for many hundreds of people and purchases services from local businesses, including small craft businesses. It provides wider economic and social benefits including cultural tourism, education and life-long learning. The Committee came to the conclusion that the Executive should acknowledge that the museum and heritage sector is an important industry in Northern Ireland with the potential to assist economic growth.

Book The Value of Museums

Download or read book The Value of Museums written by John H. Falk and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by one of the world’s leading authorities on the public use of museums, The Value of Museums: Enhancing Societal Well-Being provides a timely and compelling way for museum professionals to better understand and explain the benefits created by museum experiences. The key insight this book advances is that museum experiences successfully support a major driver of human behavior – the desire for enhanced well-being. Knowingly or not, the business of museums has always been to support and enhance the public’s personal, intellectual, social and physical well-being. Over the years, museums have excelled at this task, as evidenced by the almost indelible memories museum experiences engender. People report that museum experiences make them feel better about themselves, more informed, happier, healthier and more enriched; all outcomes directly related to enhanced well-being. Historically, benefits such as enhanced well-being were seen as vague and intangible, but Falk shows that enhanced well-being, when properly conceptualized, can not only be defined and measured, but also can be monetized. However, as many in the museum world are painfully aware, what worked yesterday for museums may not work in the future as recessions and pandemics rapidly alter the landscape. Although insights about past experiences are interesting, what is needed now is a roadmap for the future. Fortunately for museums, the public’s need for enhanced well-being will not be disappearing any time soon; enhanced well-being is now, and will always be, a fundamental and on-going human need. What has and will change, though, is how people choose to satisfy their well-being-related needs. The Value of Museums provides tangible suggestions for how museum professionals can build on their legacy of success at supporting the public’s well-being, adapting to changing times, and remaining relevant and sustainable in the future.

Book Museums and Public Value

Download or read book Museums and Public Value written by Carol A. Scott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public Value speaks to our time - to the role that museums can play in creating civil societies, to the challenges involved in using limited assets strategically, to the demand for results that make a difference and to the imperative that we build the kind of engagement that sustains our futures. This book assists museum leaders to implement a Public Value approach in their management, planning, programming and relationship building. The benefits are long term public engagement and support, which can be used to demonstrate that valuable returns result from public investment in museums. A range of authors from around the world unpack the concept of Public Value and examine its implications for museums. They situate Public Value within current management theory and practice, offer tools for implementation, highlight examples of successful practice and examine the evidence of Public Value that governments seek to inform policy and funding decisions. The book will be required reading for senior professionals in museums, as well as museum and heritage studies students.

Book Tourism in Northern Ireland and its economic impact and benefits

Download or read book Tourism in Northern Ireland and its economic impact and benefits written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Northern Ireland Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-03-15 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee's report examines the nature of tourism in Northern Ireland, its impact on and importance for the overall economy, and the effectiveness of measures taken by Government and other relevant agencies to develop, promote and support the marketing of Northern Ireland as a tourist destination. The Committee's recommendations are addressed to the Northern Ireland Office (which took back responsibility for tourism in Northern Ireland when the power-sharing executive was suspended in October 2002) but if a power-sharing executive is re-established then responsibility for tourism will revert to the restored Executive and, accordingly, responsibility for scrutiny of this policy area would revert to the Committees of a restored Assembly. The Committee's report makes 27 recommendations to help Northern Ireland maximise its tourist potential, and concludes that if government recognises the enormous economic impact of tourism, and if private enterprise in co-operation with statutory bodies can develop this recognition into a coherent strategy, there is no reason why the success of tourism in the Republic of Ireland should not be replicated in Northern Ireland to the advantage of the whole island of Ireland and with Northern Ireland itself enjoying an equivalent status to Scotland and Wales as a UK tourist destination.

Download or read book Micromuseology written by Fiona Candlin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How would our understanding of museums change if we used the Vintage Wireless Museum or the Museum of Witchcraft as examples – rather than the British Museum or the Louvre? Although there are thousands of small, independent, single-subject museums in the UK, Europe and North America, the field of museum studies remains focused almost exclusively on major institutions. In this ground-breaking new book, Fiona Candlin reveals how micromuseums challenge preconceived ideas about what museums are and how they operate. Based on extensive fieldwork and analysis of more than fifty micromuseums, she shows how they offer dramatically different models of curation, interpretation and visitor experience, and how their analysis generates new perspectives on subjects such as display, objects, collections, architecture, and the public sphere. The first-ever book dedicated to the subject, Micromuseology provides a platform for radically rethinking key debates within museum studies. Destined to transform the field, it is essential reading for students and researchers in museum studies, anthropology, material culture studies, and visual culture.
