Book excerpt: In the small English village of Little Endesley, during the hot weeks of summer holidays, the body of brutally murdered Sharon Vickers is found in the woods. She is eight years old. Jacko Penhaligon, a known child molester, is naturally the prime suspect, although he has no record of violence. The tight-knit village community wish to believe him guilty but offer up no clues. It begins to look like a spur of the moment killing, the perpetrator a passing stranger whom the police would have little chance of catching. As the murder investigation gets underway, pornographic videos come to light, a fact that directly involves officers working on the case. Other seemingly unconnected crimes take place in the nearby town of Rickenham Green that eventually lead to the identity of the killer. While struggling with the ups and downs of his own personal life and those of the officers with whom he works, DCI Ian Roper unravels a string of revenge-motivated crimes in this outstanding example of the village whodunit.

Book The Erotics of Talk

Download or read book The Erotics of Talk written by Carla Kaplan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-12-12 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is feminism in "crisis?" With many feminists now questioning identification and focusing on differences between women, what is the fate of feminist criticism's traditional imperative to rescue women's stories and make their voices heard? In this provocative rereading of the classic texts of the feminist literary canon, Carla Kaplan takes a hard look at the legacy of feminist criticism and argues that important features of feminism's own canon have been overlooked in the rush to rescue and identify texts. African-American women's texts, she demonstrates, often dramatize their distrust of their readers, their lack of faith in "the cultural conversation," through strategies of self-silencing and "self-talk." At the same time, she argues, the homoerotics of women's writing has too often gone unremarked. Not only does longing for an ideal listener draw women's texts into a romance with the reader, but there is an erotic excess which is part of feminist critical recuperation itself. Drawing on a wide range of resources, from sociolinguistics and anthropology to literary theory, Kaplan's highly readable study proposes a new model for understanding and representing "talk." She supplies fresh readings of such feminist classics as Jane Eyre, "The Yellow Wallpaper," Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and The Color Purple, revealing how their "erotics of talk" works as a rich political allegory and form of social critique.

Book excerpt: 'Here's what I learned in the panty lesson. My life is so jumbled up right now, and I try each individual thing and try to unravel it and fix it. And when it doesn't happen, I become anxious and really frustrated. So I think I need to look for the obvious source of the knot and concentrate on that.' ... 'So you think that the panty theory is all about following my truth?' 'Yes, Victorie, I do.' Andy nodded his head slowly. 'I'm not saying it will be easy, but I think it's necessary for your healing to follow your truth wherever it is taking you.' Victorie Powers seemed like just another suburban Christian housewife, taking care of her husband and girls. But deep inside, she was very troubled and very much in denial about the ugly, dark events from her teenage years. That is until a dispute with a mortgage company over a missing payment resulted in trouble for her family. Only when she learns that her daughters are suffering because they are watching her suffer does she realize it's time to sort through the pain of the past. And so begins a long, often distressing, but ultimately triumphant journey through therapy with Andy, her Christian therapist. Through a divine lesson of untangling panties, as well as therapy sessions with Andy, Victorie's turmoil is relived. Readers will feel her raw emotions, hurting when she hurts and cheering when she finds moments of joy. Jaws will drop at some of the shocking revelations; hearts will ache, and hearts will be healed as Victorie's heart is made whole again through purging the past and learning to love and accept herself in a way never before possible. This is a story from denial to acceptance, from blame to forgiveness, from trauma to triumph. Join Victorie as she learns to follow her truth in The Panty Theory.

Book excerpt: An absorbing novel of romance and revolution, loyalty and family, sacrifice and undying love We have three souls, or so I'd been told. But only in death could I confirm this.... So begins the haunting and captivating tale, set in 1935 China, of the ghost of a young woman named Leiyin, who watches her own funeral from above and wonders why she is being denied entry to the afterlife. Beside her are three souls—stern and scholarly yang; impulsive, romantic yin; and wise, shining hun—who will guide her toward understanding. She must, they tell her, make amends. As Leiyin delves back in time with the three souls to review her life, she sees the spoiled and privileged teenager she once was, a girl who is concerned with her own desires while China is fractured by civil war and social upheaval. At a party, she meets Hanchin, a captivating left-wing poet and translator, and instantly falls in love with him. When Leiyin defies her father to pursue Hanchin, she learns the harsh truth—that she is powerless over her fate. Her punishment for disobedience leads to exile, an unwanted marriage, a pregnancy, and, ultimately, her death. And when she discovers what she must do to be released from limbo into the afterlife, Leiyin realizes that the time for making amends is shorter than she thought. Suffused with history and literature, Three Souls is an epic tale of revenge and betrayal, forbidden love, and the price we are willing to pay for freedom.
