Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revelation and the Ideal There under the immediate pressure of the Divine Presence; the swift and vivid forms of imagina tion in the course of the ages catch and reflect something of that indwelling and mighty plan. The profoundest questions in the entire sphere of religious interest are these: Does the Eternal God speak to man? If so, how? I should like to believe that I had not altogether failed in my endeavor to answer these great questions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Revelation In ordinary circumstances one who undertakes to comment upon a book of the New Testament may be justly expected to make every effort to explain each successive clause and each difficult expression of the book on which he writes. My aim in the following Commentary is rather to catch the general import and object of the Revelation of St. John considered as a whole. The latter purpose indeed cannot be attained unless the commentator has himself paid faithful attention to the former; but it is not necessary that the results of these inquiries should in every case be presented to the English reader. To him this book is for the most part a perplexity and enigma, and he would only be embarrassed by a multitude of details. It seemed well, therefore, to treat the book in its sections and paragraphs rather than verse by verse; and this is the course pursued in the following pages. The translation used is for the most part that of the Revised Version. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of the Holy Spirit Goethe says wisely that the battle of faith and infidelity is the one momentous issue in human history; all other issues are subordinate to this. But faith in one point of religion facilitates faith in all religion. Truth is a whole, and every part of it is indissolubly linked to other parts. It is possible, then, that a plea for the doctrine of the Holy Spirit may possess some slight value in Christian Apolo getics. If it were so in the instance of this book, that would be my deepest joy, my best reward. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reason and Revelation I think I can best do this, in the way of offering some remarks on the references which have been made to my statements by Bishop Colenso and the Duke of Argyll. I do not class these two together, as of the same mind in this matter. Very far from it. I merely mean to say that I have now to deal, not with anonymous criticism, but with the comments of men high in Church and State. The Prelate must take precedence of the Peer, being first in hand. It is in the preface to the recently published fourth part of his Pentateuch and Book of Joshua Critically Examined, that the Bishop does me the honour of mentioning me. And to what he says of me there I confine my attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Revelation of Jesus Christ, not which God gave concerning Him, but which God gave unto Him; thus removing the veil which hung over the future, both as to time and to eternity. In the Divine actings there is order, harmony, and unity. The three persons in the adorable Trinity ever act in unison, but each in their own order: everything originates with the Father, is accomplished through the Son, and by the Holy Ghost. Book The Revelation of John Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Revelation of John Classic Reprint written by Edward Clarence Farnsworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of John On the other hand, if he be possessed of that special information which should qualify the inter preter for his office, another snare is waiting to trap him as we shall see. Study of Eastern religions and philosophies has revealed to many investigators that the pure, and noble, and uplifting, is not the sole property of Christianity. This discovery has some times resulted in a belittling of Jesus the Christ, whereas he is the chief cornerstone of that Temple of Truth into which many great and dedicated lives have been builded. This being so, let the qualified interpreter refrain from substituting for the name of Jesus Christ that of another, however exalted. If to such an interpreter the book of Revelation seem only a series of chapters taken from the initiatory rites of the Ancient Mysteries, it must be admitted that, for reasons to be explained presently, his ingenuity and special knowledge can make the book conform in a way to his theory, but it should be said that his meanings, however plausible, will be only secondary and, at a time like the present, his giving will be but a stone to those who cry for bread. Reve lation deals with world-happenings, in fact with the renovation of the human race and the earth itself, and not with that merely personal development for which the Mysteries existed, and which is only a type, the little likeness of the large. Download or read book Lectures on the Book of Revelation Classic Reprint written by William Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Book of Revelation The work before the reader consists of lectures delivered in the ordinary course of ministry, taken in short hand, and now published for the second time. Much matter of a practical nature, due to the wants of the souls addressed, has been omitted; for which were substituted remarks of a more critical character, a few when the exposition was first printed, and now with considerably greater fulness and frequency. Mr. Elliott will find that his observations are subjected to an examination, always, I trust, friendly, but sometimes searching. He is not the man, however, to complain, because I have endeavoured, chapter by chapter, to bear in mind the capital points of the Historical system, which, through his able pen, has attained its neatest shape, with the most elaborate apparatus of evidence and argument in its favour. Of his zeal for truth, no less than of his general learning and minute research, specially in history and antiquities, it is hardly needful to say that any estimate of mine differs not from that shared by almost all who know himself and the Horae Apocalypticae. If I have spoken with plainness and decision, in matters which involve an adequate knowledge of the balance of testimony for and against disputed readings, or an accurate and comprehensive grasp of Scripture, in particular of prophecy, it is because I believe that these are his weaker points, and that his just reputation in some things might expose less instructed and indiscriminating admirers to be misled in others. Whether I have shown sufficient grounds for rejecting Historicalism, not as a partial accomplishment, but as the complete and exclusive fulfilment of the Apocalypse, it is not for me to say. Book Exposition of the Book of Revelation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Exposition of the Book of Revelation Classic Reprint written by James Buchanan Knappenberger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exposition of the Book of Revelation The statements of this book are to be taken literally except where its allegorical nature is directly stated. The language of numbers holds a large place in this book which is divided into seven parts and each part into sub-sections of sevens, more or less clearly defined. The reasons for collecting these scattered fragments and giving them to the public, is the conviction wrought by more than thirty years in the pastorate, that the Book of Revelation is an essential but very much neglected por tion of the Holy Scriptures; also that much of an unsound nature has been written on this portion of the Holy Word, calling the more for a presentation of its blessed truths from a strictly orthodox standpoint. A large part of the works written on this book belong to the order of the cyclopaedia, and are adapted for schol ars and theologians. This work is designed for those who have not the time to peruse the more elaborate works. This is not a controversial work, neither is it proposed to give the steps leading to the positions taken, but is rather a summary of conclusions. These humble pages are sent forth to the world with the sincere desire and prayer that they may do good. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Visions of the End: A Study in Daniel and Revelation The limits of the book have also made it impossible to do more than hint at another matter which deserves attention. I believe it capable of proof that cataclysm and immediate intervention by God are not essential to the apocalyptic scheme of thought. Daniel and revelation, however, which alone are dealt with here, undoubtedly teach both and it would have been intolerable to devote Space to a subject which is absent from the authors with whom this volume professes to deal. But it seems clear to me that some of the prophets were moving or even had moved to the thought of evolution rather than that of cataclysm. What the apocalyptic conception as to immediate intervention meant to these men was that the eternal order was at hand - there was a door open into Heaven always. With this view goes the recognition that we have not the right to conclude from certain of our Lord's words to His belief in an instant cataclysmic revolution. It is a pleasure to acknowledge my debt to Dr. J. H. Leckie for his help in connection with this book. Dr. Leckie, whose knowledge of apocalyptic literature is only equalled by his fine insight into its spirit, has read my ms. And kept me from many mistakes. But he has also given many suggestions which have been fruitful and an encouragement which was inspiring. Perhaps the greatest encouragement he gave was that his unsparing but always generous criticism of the ms. Made its writer feel that the work was worth such close attention.
