Book Rev Stephen Bachiler Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rev Stephen Bachiler Classic Reprint written by Charles E. Batchelder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rev. Stephen Bachiler The word bachelor has long been a sore puzzle to etymologists, says Lower, in his work on English Surnames.* That the name Bachelor, however spelled, is the same as the word bachelor, meaning an unmarried man or a college graduate, is unquestioned, but many derivations have been given by different authors to account for the meaning of the word, some most fanciful and even grotesque, others with more probability of correct ness. Knights bachelors were the most ancient, though the lowest order, of knighthood in England. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Goody Wing an American Foremother

Download or read book Goody Wing an American Foremother written by Beverly J. Vorpahl and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-11 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Colonial grandmothers were much brighter and cheerier than the myth of dour, stiff, black-and-white women who have been so eternalized by Pilgrim-era paintings. Certainly do not "color" Deborah Bachiler Wing as wan and morose. Like most foremothers, Deborah was resolved and resolute, determined to create a home out of a cabin in the midst of a primeval forest. Deborah braved crossing the Atlantic as a widow with four young sons and her father, the Reverend Stephen Bachiler, an irascible fellow who attracted misfortune as though he were a magnet. While their crusade to find religious freedom was thwarted in New England as it had been in England, their experiences helped form the persevering character of America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pamela Smart conspired with her teenage lover to kill her husband. This is her story—told by the acclaimed true crime author of Cellar of Horror. Pam and Gregg Smart lived a seemingly storybook existence, the newlyweds very much in love. All of this was shattered when Gregg was senselessly shot to death in 1990. In the trial that followed, staggering revelations came out as to the motive behind the killing: Pam Smart had seduced a fifteen-year-old boy into murdering her husband. Master of true crime Ken Englade paints a portrait of a trial that gripped the nation in its scintillating tale of sex and murder. At its center is a woman who never quite grew up, and the reason why she had her husband murdered is the most stunning twist. “Ken Englade is one of the most astute observers of America’s wild side.” —Jack Olsen, bestselling author of Salt of the Earth

Book TIP 35 Enhancing Motivation for Change in Substance Use Disorder Treatment Updated 2019

Download or read book TIP 35 Enhancing Motivation for Change in Substance Use Disorder Treatment Updated 2019 written by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivation is key to substance use behavior change. Counselors can support clients' movement toward positive changes in their substance use by identifying and enhancing motivation that already exists. Motivational approaches are based on the principles of person-centered counseling. Counselors' use of empathy, not authority and power, is key to enhancing clients' motivation to change. Clients are experts in their own recovery from SUDs. Counselors should engage them in collaborative partnerships. Ambivalence about change is normal. Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.

Book An Anglo Norman Reader

Download or read book An Anglo Norman Reader written by Jane Bliss and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 1044 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an anthology with a difference. It presents a distinctive variety of Anglo-Norman works, beginning in the twelfth century and ending in the nineteenth, covering a broad range of genres and writers, introduced in a lively and thought-provoking way. Facing-page translations, into accessible and engaging modern English, are provided throughout, bringing these texts to life for a contemporary audience. The collection offers a selection of fascinating passages, and whole texts, many of which are not anthologised or translated anywhere else. It explores little-known byways of Arthurian legend and stories of real-life crime and punishment; women’s voices tell history, write letters, berate pagans; advice is offered on how to win friends and influence people, how to cure people’s ailments and how to keep clear of the law; and stories from the Bible are retold with commentary, together with guidance on prayer and confession. Each text is introduced and elucidated with notes and full references, and the material is divided into three main sections: Story (a variety of narrative forms), Miscellany (including letters, law and medicine, and other non-fiction), and Religious (saints' lives, sermons, Bible commentary, and prayers). Passages in one genre have been chosen so as to reflect themes or stories that appear in another, so that the book can be enjoyed as a collection or used as a resource to dip into for selected texts. This anthology is essential reading for students and scholars of Anglo-Norman and medieval literature and culture. Wide-ranging and fully referenced, it can be used as a springboard for further study or relished in its own right by readers interested to discover Anglo-Norman literature that was written to amuse, instruct, entertain, or admonish medieval audiences.
