Their aspirations, struggles, and daily challenges are revealed with compassion and genuine understanding of the risks they face to sustain themselves and their families. Download or read book History of Latinos written by Pablo R. Mitchell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-08-11 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first text of its kind to trace the combined history of Latino groups in the United States from 1500 to the present day. Latinos have lived in North America for over 400 years, arriving decades before the Pilgrims and other English settlers. Yet for many outside of Latino ethnic groups, little is known about the cultures that comprise the Latino community ... surprising considering their increasing presence in the U.S. population-over 50 million individuals at the latest census. This book explores the heritage and history of Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans, and Central and South Americans. Unlike similar history surveys on these communities, this book places the 500 years of Latino history into a single narrative. Each chapter discusses the collective group within a particular time period-moving chronologically from 1500 to the present-revealing the shared experiences of community building and discrimination in the United States, the central role of Latinas and Latinos in their communities, and the diversity that exists within the communities themselves.

  • Author : M. Mitchell Waldrop

Download or read book Complexity written by M. Mitchell Waldrop and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “If you liked Chaos, you’ll love Complexity. Waldrop creates the most exciting intellectual adventure story of the year” (The Washington Post). In a rarified world of scientific research, a revolution has been brewing. Its activists are not anarchists, but rather Nobel Laureates in physics and economics and pony-tailed graduates, mathematicians, and computer scientists from all over the world. They have formed an iconoclastic think-tank and their radical idea is to create a new science: complexity. They want to know how a primordial soup of simple molecules managed to turn itself into the first living cell—and what the origin of life some four billion years ago can tell us about the process of technological innovation today. This book is their story—the story of how they have tried to forge what they like to call the science of the twenty-first century. “Lucidly shows physicists, biologists, computer scientists and economists swapping metaphors and reveling in the sense that epochal discoveries are just around the corner . . . [Waldrop] has a special talent for relaying the exhilaration of moments of intellectual insight.” —The New York Times Book Review “Where I enjoyed the book was when it dove into the actual question of complexity, talking about complex systems in economics, biology, genetics, computer modeling, and so on. Snippets of rare beauty here and there almost took your breath away.” —Medium “[Waldrop] provides a good grounding of what may indeed be the first flowering of a new science.” —Publishers Weekly

Book Memories of Memories Essays on the Bicultural Education of a Second Generation Member of America s Italian Hebrew Diaspora

Download or read book Memories of Memories Essays on the Bicultural Education of a Second Generation Member of America s Italian Hebrew Diaspora written by George Sacerdote and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-18 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Italian Fascist racial laws of 1938 drove the author's Jewish parents and brothers into exile from their comfortable upper-middle-class life in Italy, where they and their ancestors had prospered for countless centuries. They settled first in France and later in the Unit-ed States. where George was born in 1945. He grew up speaking Italian, English and French in a multi-cultural householdthat divided its time between the US and post-war Italy. This background together with a rigorous scientific education made him a keen observer and positioned him for academic and business success. In this series of essays, he reflects on his personal life experiences and his family's history to distill the fundamental values that shaped his life. His story is told from the unique perspective of one who was simultaneously a "native" and an outsider on both sides of the Atlantic and thus could view national cultures and events as both a local participant and a disinterested observer.

Book Metaphysically Speaking

Download or read book Metaphysically Speaking written by Della Reese and published by . This book was released on 2012-12 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphysics - Meta meaning beyond; Physics meaning the physical Beyond the physical, is a systematic study of the science of being. It is that which transcends the physical. The subtitle of this book is "The Bible is the greatest How-To book ever written." I call it my contract with God. He did not just leave us some amusing stories. God has given us instructions and examples of how to live a better life. Through metaphysics, we reach a clear understanding of the realm of ideas and their legitimate expression. We need to be skilled in the science of being. We are all metaphysicians. We are made in the image-likeness of God, therefore we are more than just physical beings. We are spiritual. Some of us are not consciously aware of our spiritual powers. This book not only lets you know that you have them, but it teaches you how to use them. Jesus speaking, "I have come that they may have life, and that more abundantly." John 10:10.

Book How We Think

Download or read book How We Think written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1910 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our schools are troubled with a multiplication of studies, each in turn having its own multiplication of materials and principles. Our teachers find their tasks made heavier in that they have come to deal with pupils individually and not merely in mass. Unless these steps in advance are to end in distraction, some clew of unity, some principle that makes for simplification, must be found. This book represents the conviction that the needed steadying and centralizing factor is found in adopting as the end of endeavor that attitude of mind, that habit of thought, which we call scientific. This scientific attitude of mind might, conceivably, be quite irrelevant to teaching children and youth. But this book also represents the conviction that such is not the case; that the native and unspoiled attitude of childhood, marked by ardent curiosity, fertile imagination, and love of experimental inquiry, is near, very near, to the attitude of the scientific mind. If these pages assist any to appreciate this kinship and to consider seriously how its recognition in educational practice would make for individual happiness and the reduction of social waste, the book will amply have served its purpose. It is hardly necessary to enumerate the authors to whom I am indebted. My fundamental indebtedness is to my wife, by whom the ideas of this book were inspired, and through whose work in connection with the Laboratory School, existing in Chicago between 1896 and 1903, the ideas attained such concreteness as comes from embodiment and testing in practice. It is a pleasure, also, to acknowledge indebtedness to the intelligence and sympathy of those who coöperated as teachers and supervisors in the conduct of that school, and especially to Mrs. Ella Flagg Young, then a colleague in the University, and now Superintendent of the Schools of Chicago.

Download or read book The Laws of Thinking written by Bishop E. Bernard Jordan and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2008-02-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bishop Jordan has written a stellar work that is guaranteed to free the mentally enslaved, acquit the wrongfully charged, and bring healing to the sick. The Laws of Thinking is not a work for the shallow-minded person. It is demanding and challenging. It is neither intended to be used as the basis for unmerited criticism nor as sermon material for the minister having difficulty receiving a fresh work from the Lord. It was written with a very clear aim: to provoke spiritual thought. Bill Gates’ Microsoft, Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions, Stephen Spielberg’s DreamWorks, and even his own Zo? Ministries all began with a thought. Every invention, university, book, song, business, home, skyscraper, movie, stage play, and baby began when someone chose to think. Nothing happens without thought. Creation did not happen without God’s thought. Bishop Jordan’s first objective is getting you to think.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hendrik Petrus Berlage, the Dutch architect and architectural philosopher, created a series of buildings and a body of writings from 1886 to 1909 that were among the first efforts to probe the problems and possibilities of modernism. Although his Amsterdam Stock Exchange, with its rational mastery of materials and space, has long been celebrated for its seminal influence on the architecture of the 20th century, Berlage's writings are highlighted here. Bringing together Berlage's most important texts, among them "Thoughts on Style in Architecture", "Architecture's Place in Modern Aesthetics", and "Art and Society", this volume presents a chapter in the history of European modernism. In his introduction, Iain Boyd Whyte demonstrates that the substantial contribution of Berlage's designs to modern architecture cannot be fully appreciated without an understanding of the aesthetic principles first laid out in his writings.
