Book Eco efficient concrete

Download or read book Eco efficient concrete written by F. Pacheco Torgal and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-02-04 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume of polymeric wastes such as tyre rubber and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles is increasing at a fast rate. An estimated 1000 million tyres reach the end of their useful lives every year and 5000 million more are expected to be discarded in a regular basis by the year 2030. Only a small part is currently recycled and millions of tyres are just stockpiled, landfilled or buried. As for PET bottles annual consumption is over 300 000 million units. The majority is just landfilled. This chapter reviews research published on the performance of concrete containing tyre rubber and PET wastes. Furthermore it discusses the effect of waste treatments, the size of waste particles and the waste replacement volume on the fresh and hardened properties of concrete.

Book Recycling of plastic waste in to construction material

Download or read book Recycling of plastic waste in to construction material written by Aman Mola and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-03-30 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fachbuch aus dem Jahr 2019 im Fachbereich Ingenieurwissenschaften - Bauingenieurwesen, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: As natural aggregate sources are becoming depleted due to high demand in construction industry and the amount of disposed waste material keeps increasing, researchers are exploring the use of alternative materials which good preserve natural resources and save the environment. In this study, the utilization of plastic waste and broken glasses as a construction material for the production of building construction inputs such as roof tile, floor tile and hollow plastic block is a partial solution to environmental and ecological problems. Quality control test of samples of prepared material are conducted and compared with the standard material specification This study implies that for hallow plastic block, 33% plastic, 11.17% fine glass, 11.17% fine sand and 44.6% glass gives an optimum compressive result and plastic waste with a ratio of 30% plastic waste. Using plastic waste with a ratio of 30% plastic waste and 70% glass and sand gives better and quality roof tile, and 32% plastic and 68% glass and sand is preferable for light traffic zone (axle load less than 27Mpa) floor tile. Finally, conclude that using plastic tile in humid (wet) environment is preferable because it can resist cold and freeze weather due to low water absorption.

Book Waste Materials Used in Concrete Manufacturing

Download or read book Waste Materials Used in Concrete Manufacturing written by Satish Chandra and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-12-31 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The environmental aspects involved in the production and use of cement, concrete and other building materials are of growing importance. CO2 emissions are 0.8-1.3 ton/ton of cement production in dry process. SO2 emission is also very high, but is dependent upon the type of fuel used. Energy consumption is also very high at 100-150 KWT/ton of cement produced. It is costly to erect new cement plants. Substitution of waste materials will conserve dwindling resources, and will avoid the environmental and ecological damages caused by quarrying and exploitation of the raw materials for making cement. To some extent, it will help to solve the problem otherwise encountered in disposing of the wastes. Partial replacement of clinker or portland cement by slag, fly ash, silica fume and natural rock minerals illustrates these aspects. Partial replacement by natural materials that require little or no processing, such as pozzolans, calcined clays, etc., saves energy and decreases emission of gases. The output of waste materials suitable as cement replacement (slags, fly ashes, silica fumes, rice husk ash, etc.) is more than double that of cement production. These waste materials can partly be used, or processed, to produce materials suitable as aggregates or fillers in concrete. These can also be used as clinker raw materials, or processed into cementing systems. New grinding and mixing technology will make the use of these secondary materials simpler. Developments in chemical admixtures: superplasticizers, air entraining agents, etc., help in controlling production techniques and, in achieving the desired properties in concrete.Use of waste products is not only a partial solution to environmental and ecological problems; it significantly improves the microstructure, and consequently the durability properties of concrete, which are difficult to achieve by the use of pure portland cement. The aim is not only to make the cements and concrete less expensive, but to provide a blend of tailored properties of waste materials and portland cements suitable for specified purpose. This requires a better understanding of chemistry, and materials science. There is an increasing demand for better understanding of material properties, as well as better control of the microstructure developing in the construction material, to increase durability. The combination of different binders and modifiers to produce cheaper and more durable building materials will solve to some extent the ecological and environmental problems.

Book Integrated Solid Waste Management A Lifecycle Inventory

Download or read book Integrated Solid Waste Management A Lifecycle Inventory written by P.R. White and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is often considered to be a journey. The lifecycle of waste can similarly be considered to be a journey from the cradle (when an item becomes valueless and, usually, is placed in the dustbin) to the grave (when value is restored by creating usable material or energy; or the waste is transformed into emissions to water or air, or into inert material placed in a landfill). This preface provides a route map for the journey the reader of this book will undertake. Who? Who are the intended readers of this book? Waste managers (whether in public service or private companies) will find a holistic approach for improving the environmental quality and the economic cost of managing waste. The book contains general principles based on cutting edge experience being developed across Europe. Detailed data and a computer model will enable operations managers to develop data-based improvements to their systems. Producers oj waste will be better able to understand how their actions can influence the operation of environmentally improved waste management systems. Designers oj products and packages will be better able to understand how their design criteria can improve the compatibility of their product or package with developing, environmentally improved waste management systems. Waste data specialists (whether in laboratories, consultancies or environ mental managers of waste facilities) will see how the scope, quantity and quality of their data can be improved to help their colleagues design more effective waste management systems.
