Book The Forest Tree Culturist

Download or read book The Forest Tree Culturist written by Andrew S. Fuller and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest Tree Culturist: A Treatise on the Cultivation of American Forest Trees, With Notes on the Most Valuable Foreign Species Some years since, while gratifying my taste for Horticultural experiments, I was led to plant seeds of many of our native forest trees. The results satisfied me that nothing was wanting but a better acquaintance with the nature and habits of these seeds to insure success with them as uniformly as with any others; consequently I gave the subject attention, and by observation and experiment learned how to manage not only the trees of our own forests, but many foreign varieties. I would not be understood to say that I have planted seeds and raised trees of every species and variety, but have experimented sufficiently with the different species as to know whereof I write. My success was such that the Farmer's Club of the American Institute desired me to give at one of their meetings an account of my experiments, which I did briefly. This was published as a portion of the Report of the meeting in the New York Tribune, and from that copied by other papers throughout the country. In consequence thereof, I have received many letters asking more definite information on different points, so many that I have been unable to reply to them so fully as I could have wished. The following pages were written for the purpose of giving such information as the public seem to desire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tree Doctor: A Book on Tree Culture HE Americans are a people who love the beautiful, and yet, strange to say, they have destroyed the trees, which are among the grandest objects of all nature. This, however, has not been intentionally done. The pioneers made war on trees, slaughtered them, burnt them up and got rid of them the easiest and quickest Way they could devise. To a certain extent, this was excusable, as the land was needed for other purposes. Thousands now regret that they did not preserve some of the giants of the native forests. The majestic elm in this photograph is one of them. What would you give to have it in your yard? Our people now deeply deplore the mistakes that have been made, and are spending millions of dollars annually, in the hope of establishing sufficient shade and fruit trees for the requirements of man and beast. In spite of all their noble efforts they are meet ing defeat on every hand. The whole trouble is traceable to two oversights. It was my intention, five years ago, to point out these facts and the accompanying evils in a lec ture, by the aid of the stereopticon; but I saw that a thousand persons in that work could not reach the masses in' ten years. Then I thought I would write for some papers, butreadily discovered that but comparatively few people could be reached, and such read ing is not easily preserved. Finally, I determined to put the camera to work. Two authorities might disagree on a certain point, and the public say, They can't both be right; may be both are wrong. When, however, the camera gives you a picture, that is something from which you cannot get away. I had first intended to use fifty photographs, then made it one hundred. Again, finding there was a call for knowledge on the landscape and floral arts, I have used 175 photographs, and could use more to advantage, but cannot for the money. I desire to keep the book at so that it will be within the reach Of all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Tree Cultures

Download or read book Tree Cultures written by Paul Cloke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-13 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between nature and culture has become a popular focus in social science, but there have been few grounded accounts of trees. Providing shelter, fuel, food and tools, trees have played a vital role in human life from the earliest times, but their role in symbolic expression has been largely overlooked. For example, trees are often used to express nationalistic feelings. Germans drew heavily on tree and forest imagery in nation-building, and the idea of 'hearts of oak' has been central to concepts of English identity. Classic scenes of ghoulish trees coming to life and forests closing in on unsuspecting passers-by commonly feature in the media. In other instances, trees are used to represent paradisical landscapes and symbolize the ideologies of conservation and concern for nature. Offering new theoretical ideas, this book looks at trees as agents that co-constitute places and cultures in relationship with human agency. What happens when trees connect with human labour, technology, retail and consumption systems? What are the ethical dimensions of these connections? The authors discuss how trees can affect and even define notions of place, and the ways that particular places are recognized culturally. Working trees, companion trees, wild trees and collected or conserved trees are considered in relation to the dynamic politics of conservation and development that affect the values given to trees in the contemporary world. Building on the growing field of landscape study, this book offers rich insights into the symbolic and practical roles of trees. It will be vital reading for anyone interested in the anthropology of landscape, forestry, conservation and development, and for those concerned with the social science of nature.

Book Tree Culture in New Zealand Classic Reprint

Download or read book Tree Culture in New Zealand Classic Reprint written by Henry John Matthews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tree-Culture in New Zealand HE continued development of the colony and the rapid extension of settlement has increased the demand for timber to such an extent that the question of forest-tree planting for future supplies has been forced upon the atten tion of the people, who are fully prepared to support syste matic governmental action. The functions of this Department have hitherto been con fined to tree raising and planting, some five million forest trees being raised and planted permanently per annum; and it has now been decided to 'assist settlers by supply ing information in regard to all subjects connected with the raising and planting of trees, whether for ornament, shelter, or as a source of timber-supply for the future, and with this object in view the present volume has been compiled for the use of settlers. In preparing the work the author has endeavoured to present in a concise form a general outline of the subject of forestry as applicable to the colony, without attempting to be exhaustive. The tendency on the part of European writers has been to amplify and extend the subject to the exhaustion of the merest detail, necessitating the reading of much unimportant matter to find the points most required. Technical details have been avoided as far as possible, but scientific names have been mentioned chiefly because common names are often uncertain in their application. Many works have been written on the subject, but most of these lack the simpler and special instructions which the Department's correspondence shows to be chiefly in demand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Tree Planting in the Plains The experimental plantings herein described in detail are given not only as a record Of the beginnings Of an important work, but as indi cating what are believed to be useful mixtures Of trees for planting in the West. Sufficient time has not elapsed, even in the Oldest plantings described, for final conclusions to be drawn; but the notes on kinds will be found of interest in connection with the experiments, and the whole is believed to afford a basis for selection Of trees for the various States included in the treeless area. While this bulletin has to do primarily with Western planting, it may be found a safe guide in many directions for forest planting within the timbered regions Of the country, especially as to general principles involved. Experiments in planting in cut-over lands in the pineries Of Minnesota and Pennsylvania have been begun by the Department, but are not yet sufficiently advanced to warrant even a progress report. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Culture and Management of Our Native Forests for Development as Timber or Ornamental Wood It is proper that I should preface the following essay by a state ment of the circumstances which led to its preparation. A letter of mine, on Tree Culture, which was published in the New York Nation of Dec. 1, 1881, elicited so many inquiries from such widely separated sections of the country, as to convince me that the subject was one of very general interest. In every letter I received the question was asked, Where can I find any treatise or book of instruction on the management of our native forests and I was forced to reply that I knew of no such book, and had been assured, on the highest authority, that there was no foreign work that was applicable to our wants. All that I had learned upon the subject had been from experience and observation, and I felt pain fully conscious of my own ignorance of much that pertains to it. But the questions that were asked me by intelligent inquirers afford ed in themselves sufficient evidence of a general want of recognition of some of the principles which experience had taught me were of essential importance in forest culture. These I have endeavored to set forth in the following essay, which I have had the honor of reading to a committee of the Massachusetts Legislature, and to the National Forestry Congress, at Cincinnati. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of Trees IN presenting this volume, the author is aware that there are several excellent books, dealing with one phase or another of tree life, already before the public. It is believed, how ever, that there is still need for an all-round book, adapted to the beginner, which gives in a brief and not too technical way the most important facts concerning the identification, structure and uses of our more common trees, and Which considers their habits, enemies and care both when grow ing alone and when growing in groups or forests. In the chapters on the identification of trees, the aim has been to bring before the student only such characters and facts as shall help him to distinguish the tree readily during all seasons of the year. Special stress is laid in each case on the most striking peculiarities. Possible confusion with other trees of similar appearance is prevented as far as possible through comparisons with trees of like form or habit. Only such information is given concerning the structure and requirements of trees as will enable the reader better to understand the subsequent chapters. In the second half of the book, practical application is made of the student's general knowledge thu's acquired, and he is acquainted with the fundamental principles of planting, care, forestry, wood identification and nature study. The author recognizes the vastness of the field he is attempting to cover and the impossibility of even touching. Hunter said he did not write for the ignorant, but for the learned; he created a'large Jordan; I had the misfortune to fall into it, and in wading through, I met with many mutilated fragments from eve lyn's sylva, floating therein; but the mass was nothing but slops - I write for the inquisitive, who read for informa tion on rural affairs. Book Value Growth of Pine Pulpwood on the George Walton Experimental Forest Classic Reprint

Download or read book Value Growth of Pine Pulpwood on the George Walton Experimental Forest Classic Reprint written by Daniel E. Chappelle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Value Growth of Pine Pulpwood on the George Walton Experimental Forest In order to maximize profit it is necessary that the grower of pine pulpwood not only retain the proper amount of growing stock but also select the proper trees to remove when thinning. Those trees not expected to earn their way over the next growth period should be harvested. To a considerable extent, therefore, profit maximization depends on the actions of the timber marker. The financial maturity concept provides a method for selecting trees to retain as growing stock so as to maximize profits from timber growing. To apply this concept to timber marking decisions, it is necessary to determine and compare two factors, the alternative rate of return of the owner and the value growth rate of the timber. The alternative rate of return is the mini mum rate, expressed in compound interest form, that the owner will accept on investments of equal risk._2/ This rate will vary considerably, depending on the individual owner's economic situation. Value growth is the increase in value obtained by retaining a tree over an additional growth period. It is generally expressed as a compound interest rate based on the value of a combination of quantity and quality growth of growing stock for a given period of time. Financial maturity is reached when the tree's value growth rate expected over the future period is equal to the owner's alternative rate of return. Marking guides based on financial matu rity are in demand because of the growing realization among forest owners that adequate profit must be forthcoming to justify increases in growing stock. This digital edition allows young readers and lifelong fans to continue the legacy and love of a classic that will now reach an even wider audience. "Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy." So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. This moving parable for all ages offers a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation.
