Book Return Migration and Identity

Download or read book Return Migration and Identity written by Nan M. Sussman and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global trend for immigrants to return home has unique relevance for Hong Kong. This work of cross-cultural psychology explores many personal stories of return migration. The author captures in dozens of interviews the anxieties, anticipations, hardships, and flexible world perspectives of migrants and their families, as well as friends and co-workers. The book examines cultural identity shifts and population flows during a critical juncture in Hong Kong history between the Sino-British Joint Declaration in 1984 and the early years of Hong Kong's new status as a special administrative region after 1997. Nearly a million residents of Hong Kong migrated to North America, Europe, and Australia in the 1990s. These interviews and analyses help illustrate individual choices and identity profiles during this period of unusual cultural flexibility and behavioral adjustment. Nan M. Sussmanis an associate professor and chair of psychology at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York. "Sussman effectively weaves together themes about migration and remigration from such diverse sources as arts and literature, history, sociology, and her own discipline of psychology. This book will make an excellent contribution to research on acculturation, cross-cultural transition and adaptation, identity and migration." -- Colleen Ward, Victoria University of Wellington

Book Return Migrants in Hong Kong Singapore and Israel

Download or read book Return Migrants in Hong Kong Singapore and Israel written by Kwok-bun Chan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-07 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This insightful volume explores the experiences of ethnic migrants returning to Hong Kong, Singapore, and Israel. Return migrants who were exposed to the western culture and society undergo personal transformations that significantly impact their views on values such as gender, individualism, democracy, tradition, and individual autonomy. To evaluate how well these individuals are able to reintegrate back into their native countries, the authors conducted a thorough comparative study between returnees in the three research sites through in-depth interviews, ethnographic fieldwork, and analyses of government policies. Among the topics discussed: Family as a strategic middle ground between the individual and society The social psychology of coping and adaptation Public, outer historical, and macro forces that shape returnees’ experiences Comparisons and contrasts between two primarily Chinese societies, along with one racially and culturally different Western society Cost-and-benefit analyses of decision-making in migration Return Migrants in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Israel is a compelling new perspective on the migrant experience drawn from in-depth research on returnees across three countries and a variety of circumstances.

Book The Economic Roots of the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong

Download or read book The Economic Roots of the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong written by Louis Augustin-Jean and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the autumn of 2014, thousands of people, young and educated in their majority, occupied the chief business district and seat of the government in Hong Kong. The protest, known as the Umbrella Movement, called for ‘genuine democracy’, as well as a fairer social and economic system. The book aims to provide a dynamic framework to explain why socioeconomic forces converged to produce such a situation. Examining increasing inequality, rising prices and stagnating incomes, it stresses the role of economic and social factors, as opposed to the domestic political and constitutional issues often assumed to be the root cause behind the protests. It first argues that globalization and the increasing influence of China’s economy in Hong Kong has weighted on salaries. Second, it shows that the oligopolistic nature of the local economy has generated rents, which have reinforced inequality. The book demonstrates that the younger generation, which is still finding its place in society, has been particularly affected by these phenomena, especially with social mobility at a low point. Offering a new approach to studying the Umbrella Movement, this book will appeal to students and scholars interested in Hong Kong's political landscape, as well Chinese politics more broadly.

Book Hong Kong Cinema and the 1997 Return of the Colony to Mainland China The Tensions and the Consequences

Download or read book Hong Kong Cinema and the 1997 Return of the Colony to Mainland China The Tensions and the Consequences written by Mengyang Cui and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2007-09-25 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, I aimed to explore deeply the Hong Kong 1997 handover theme films by comparison and summary in order to discover the history and cultural meaning of this incident from a human perspective. 1997 is a turning point for Hong Kong people, society and the film industry. The city confronted a historical turning point under an experimental one country, two systems convention without precedent in history. This led many Hong Kong people to lose confidence about their future. In addition, this historical incident brought a series of social issues to Hong Kong people, such as confusion about their identity and uncertainty about the future. Therefore I chose four films from two directors with different viewpoints reveal Hong Kong society and people s life and spirit. Those films are Peter Chan s Comrades, Almost a Love Story (1996), Golden Chicken (2000), and Fruit Chan s Made in Hong Kong (1997), The Longest Summer (1997). Also, I will give a brief introduction about the aspects of the past of Hong Kong politically (colonial rule), economically and with respect of Hong Kong identity to understand its cinema and the possible effects of the 1997 handover.

Download or read book Hong Kong written by Michael B. Yahuda and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The return of Hong Kong to China in July 1997 has the potential to benefit China's rapidly expanding economy. China's handling of the transition will have enormous implications for her international standing. This is the first study to analyse the serious problems and real opportunities that the return of the colony poses to China's international status. Examining the relationships between Greater China, Hong Kong and the West, Hong Kong: China's Challenge explores the challenges that Chinese policy makers face up to 1997 and beyond: the clash of political cultures; handling problematic negotiations; dealing with conflicting economic interests. The book concludes by suggesting that a laissez faire approach to the lucrative Hong Kong markets will ensure that China harnesses the full political and economic benefits of sovereignty over the colony.

Book The Right to Leave and Return and Chinese Migration Law

Download or read book The Right to Leave and Return and Chinese Migration Law written by Guofu Liu and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Right to Leave and Return (RLR) is a fundamental human right, each State has the sovereign right to regulate RLR in accordance with its own laws. In the case of China, the country's communist political system has significantly affected the development of RLR and the country's approach to it. As a rule, China's approach is restrictive. As part of its reform and 'opening up' policies, China has embarked on a range of reforms to liberalise RLR, but the reforms lack cohesion and focus, and remain restrictive. Given its past and its complex social and economic conditions, China may have some justifications for its approach, but on balance, has more to gain from adopting a more liberal approach. The issue of RLR in China is crucial both for the future of China, and for development of RLR in the world. "The Right to Leave and Return (RLR) and Chinese Migration Law" provides a comprehensive and systematic review of the RLR in international and Chinese migration law. It has been written on the basis of Chinese statutes pertinent to the RLR, also of relevant international instruments and key cases. It investigates RLR in international migration law and practice; analyses RLR in the context of China, and identifies its driving factors; investigates the conditions and practical concerns relevant to the protection of RLR; and concludes with recommendations on how the Chinese regulatory regime governing RLR can be improved.
