Book Heinrich Schenker and Beethoven s Hammerklavier Sonata

Download or read book Heinrich Schenker and Beethoven s Hammerklavier Sonata written by Nicholas Marston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1912 Heinrich Schenker contracted with the Viennese publisher Universal Edition to provide an 'elucidatory edition' (Erl erungsausgabe) of Beethoven's last five piano sonatas. Each publication would comprise a score, newly edited by Schenker and using the composer's autograph manuscript as principal source, together with a substantial commentary combining analytical, text-critical and performance-related matter. Four of the five editions appeared between 1913 and 1921, but that of the 'Hammerklavier' Sonata, op. 106, was never published. It has generally been assumed that this was simply because Schenker was unable to locate the autograph manuscript, which remains missing to this day. But as Nicholas Marston shows in a detailed history of the Erl erungsausgabe project, other factors were involved also, including financial considerations, Schenker's health concerns, and his broader theoretical ambitions. Moreover, despite the missing autograph he nevertheless developed a voice-leading analysis of the complete sonata during the years 1924-1926, a crucial period in the development of his mature theory of tonal music. Marston's book provides the first in-depth study of this rich analysis, which is reproduced in full in high-quality digital images. The book draws on hundreds of letters and documents from Schenker's Nachla it both adds to our biographical knowledge of Schenker and illuminates for the first time the response of this giant of music theory to one of the most significant masterworks in all music.

Book Akkadian Royal Letters in Later Mesopotamian Tradition

Download or read book Akkadian Royal Letters in Later Mesopotamian Tradition written by Mary Frazer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-06-17 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Akkadian Royal Letters in Later Mespotamian Tradition reconsiders the question of the authenticity of the letters attributed to earlier royal correspondents that were studied in Assyrian and Babylonian scribal centres ca. 700–100 BCE. By scrutinizing the letters’ contents, language, possible transmission histories ca. 1400–100 BCE and the epistemic limitations of authenticity criticism, the book grounds scepticism about the letters’ authenticity in previously undiscussed features of the texts. It also provides a new foundation for research into the related questions of when and why these beguiling texts were composed in the first place.

Book Imagine Paul

    Book Details:
  • Author : G. Roger Greene
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2024-10-17
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 459 pages

Download or read book Imagine Paul written by G. Roger Greene and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-10-17 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can the real Paul the apostle live again in a postmodern, technological age? Paul’s ministry stood at the very headwaters of the Christian gospel surrounding Jesus of Nazareth. His letters are the earliest documents contained in the New Testament. The current work calls upon the reader to actively engage Paul in his context, rather than to affirm the assumed theological Paul of later Christian orthodoxy. The reader is thus invited to walk with a more real Paul as he may be imagined from the sources we have, to think Paul’s thoughts with him through his letters, and to more fully experience the gospel of God that Paul knew and proclaimed. Paul was a “man in Christ” directly called by God to announce the gospel of God to both Jew and gentile in the midst of a world ruled by Rome. He did so through two major campaigns, rather than “three missionary journeys.” He wrote pastoral letters to real first-century churches. The real Paul did not write theology, but he rather proclaimed a gospel to a world in search of a soul.
