Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few books published to date comprehensively analyzes how at statehood Alaska served as a leader in creating and enforcing environmental policy and how these early policies, together with the emerging activism of Alaska Native communities, played a part in the birth of the nationwide environmental movement. The book also addresses how the powerful extraction industry subsequently shaped the management of water and subsistence resources (as championed in particular by the Trump administration conservative and state politicians). After a campaign led by industrial interests and the republican party to discredit the environmental movement, today Democratic and tribal leaders and everyday citizen are working to limit the impacts of extraction interests. At the same time Alaska Tribes are boosting the role of traditional knowledge, rights of the river, and tribal self-determination movements in protecting water and subsistence resources.

Book excerpt: “Under The Trestle” is the true story of the most compelling murder case in Virginia history. In 1980, beautiful Gina Renee Hall, a Radford University freshman, went to a Virginia Tech nightclub on a Saturday night. She was never seen again. Her abandoned car was found parked beneath a railroad trestle bridging the New River, with blood in the trunk. The investigation led police to a secluded cabin on Claytor Lake, where there was evidence of a violent attack. Former Virginia Tech football player Stephen Epperly was charged with murder, despite the fact that Gina’s body was never found. In Virginia’s “trial of the century,” prosecutor Everett Shockley presented an entirely circumstantial case. Key witnesses against Epperly included his best friend, his mother and a tracking dog handler later believed by many to be a fraud. Three former Virginia Tech football players testified, including a Hokies quarterback once featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Would Epperly become the first person in Virginia history convicted of murder without the victim’s body, an eyewitness or a confession? And would authorities ever find the body of Gina Renee Hall?

Book Mosier s Raiders

Download or read book Mosier s Raiders written by David Bronson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The LST was a ship designed to perform a dirty and dangerous task, to land on an enemy-held beach and disgorge her load of tanks and men. LST stood for "Landing Ship, Tank," but to the sailors who served aboard these ungainly ships it also meant "Large Slow Target." The LST wasn't very pretty to look at, and it wasn't as glamorous as the powerful battleships and legendary aircraft carriers whose names have gone down in history. In fact, LSTs weren't given the honor of a name at all, they would only be known by their hull number. Mosier's Raiders is the story of one of these ships, the USS LST-325, a veteran of the invasions of Sicily, Salerno and Normandy. Drawn from extensive interviews with the men who served aboard her, Mosier's Raiders is not just the story of a ship; it is about a group of strangers coming together as a team, and the bond of brotherhood that carried them through the worst war had to offer.

  • Pages : 249 pages

Download or read book Frank Avant Vs C H Mason written by Deacon Calvin S. McBride and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without a doubt, Frank Avant vs. C. H. Mason is the most critical juncture in the entire history of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC). The Pentecostal-Holiness Movement of the early twentieth century began with an aggressive legal confrontation between two of the movement's leading African-American pastors and their adherents. Charles P. Jones and Charles H. Mason's up-close and personal relationship was torn apart over their fundamental differences of the baptism in the Holy Ghost and speaking in tongues. Up until the Azusa Street Revival, Jones and Mason shared an extraordinary profundity for each other; and their relationship was maximized when Jones united Mason and Lelia Washington in marriage in 1905. In 1907, Jones filed a lawsuit in Memphis against Mason after leading the way in having Mason excommunicated from the General Ministerial Council of Holiness Churches and Meetings for proliferating speaking in tongues. Jones and Mason founded the organization in 1897 after both of them were expelled from the Baptist denomination for teaching holiness. When Mason lost the case in Memphis Chancery Court, it was merely an opportunity to lead the Jones faction to the―Red Sea. Mason and his attorney, Elder Robert E. Hart, appealed the case to the Tennessee Supreme Court in Jackson, where the judges decided in their favor, devastating the Jones faction and their attorney, Benjamin F. Booth.
