Book Return of the Lakeview Slasher

Download or read book Return of the Lakeview Slasher written by Phil Sagan and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-11-25 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: September, 1973 - a killer terrorizes the affluent community of Lakeview; slashing the throat and stomach of six seemingly random victims. The murder weapon is found at each scene - a Hansi Brand Chef Knife. The killer is dubbed The Lakeview Slasher by the press and is never apprehended despite the best efforts of law enforcement. September, 1993 - on the unheralded twentieth anniversary of The Lakeview Slasher's initial slaying, a young woman is murdered near a park in Lakeview; her throat and stomach slashed with the Hansi Brand Chef Knife left at the scene. After two decades of inactivity, has the Lakeview Slasher returned? On the case are Bill Strode and Sandra Cates, the city's more lauded detectives. However, personal demons, a dark revelation, and vengeful gangsters, force the longtime partners and best friends to work the case in unconventional fashion. They receive reluctant assistance from Thomas Riley, an idealistic rookie detective who is as awed by their investigative skills as he is repulsed by their often unethical tactics. A beloved youth pastor's guilt over past sins, a dangerous thug with a grudge, and a privileged young man's deadly obsession, also factor into this unpredictable crime thriller where the concepts of right and wrong, good and evil, reward and punishment, are not mutually exclusive.

Eleven years ago, six kindergartners went missing without a trace. After all that time, the people left behind moved on, or tried to. Until today. Today five of those kids return. They're sixteen, and they are . . . fine. Scarlett comes home and finds a mom she barely recognizes, and doesn't really recognize the person she's supposed to be, either. But she thinks she remembers Lucas. Lucas remembers Scarlett, too, except they're entirely unable to recall where they've been or what happened to them. Neither of them remember the sixth victim, Max--the only one who hasn't come back. Which leaves Max's sister, Avery, wanting answers. She wants to find her brother--dead or alive--and isn't buying this whole memory-loss story. But as details of the disappearance begin to unfold, no one is prepared for the truth. This unforgettable novel--with its rich characters, high stakes, and plot twists--will leave readers breathless.

Book Thirty Eight Witnesses

Download or read book Thirty Eight Witnesses written by A. M. Rosenthal and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist’s groundbreaking account of the crime that shocked New York City—and the world In the early hours of March 13, 1964, twenty-eight-year-old Catherine “Kitty” Genovese was stabbed to death in the middle-class neighborhood of Kew Gardens, Queens. The attack lasted for more than a half hour—enough time for Genovese’s assailant to move his car and change hats before returning to rape and kill her just a few steps from her front door. Yet it was not the brutality of the murder that made it international news. It was a chilling detail Police Commissioner Michael Joseph Murphy shared with A. M. Rosenthal of the New York Times: Thirty-eight of Genovese’s neighbors witnessed the assault—and none called for help. To Rosenthal, who had recently returned to New York after spending a decade overseas and would become the Times’s longest-serving executive editor, that startling statistic spoke volumes about both the turbulence of the 1960s and the enduring mysteries of human nature. His impassioned coverage of the case sparked a firestorm of public indignation and led to the development of the psychological theory known as the “bystander effect.” Thirty-Eight Witnesses is indispensable reading for students of journalism and anyone seeking to learn about one of the most infamous crimes of the twentieth century.

Book Youth Gangs

  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 22 pages

Download or read book Youth Gangs written by James C. Howell and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1998 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States has seen rapid proliferation of youth gangs since 1980. During this period, the number of cities with gang problems increased from an estimated 286 jurisdictions with more than 2,000 gangs and nearly 100,000 gang members in 1980 (Miller, 1992) to about 4,800 jurisdictions with more than 31,000 gangs and approximately 846,000 gang members in 1996(Moore and Terrett, in press). An 11-city survey of eighth graders found that 9 percent were currently gang members, and 17 percent said they had belonged to a gang at some point in their lives (Esbensen and Osgood, 1997).Other studies reported comparable percentages and also showed that gang members were responsible for a large proportion of violent offenses. In the Rochester site of the OJJDP-funded Program of Research on the Causes and Correlates of Delinquency, gang members (30 percent of the sample) self-reported committing 68 percent of all violent offenses (Thornberry, 1998). In the Denver site, adolescent gang members (14 percent of the sample) self-reported committing 89 percent of all serious violent offenses (Huizinga, 1997). In another study, supported by OJJDP and several other agenciesand organizations, adolescent gang members in Seattle (15 percent of the sample) self-reported involvement in 85 percent of robberies committed by the entire sample (Battin et al., 1998).This Bulletin reviews data and research to consolidate available knowledge on youth gangs that are involved in criminal activity. Following a historical perspective, demographic information ispresented. The scope of the problem is assessed, including gang problems in juvenile detention and correctional facilities. Several issues are then addressed by reviewing gang studies to provide aclearer understanding of youth gang problems. An extensive list of references is provided for further review.
