Download or read book Letter 1813 Aug 6 Highwassee Garrison to John Armstrong Secretary of War written by and published by . This book was released on 1813 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letter dated August 6, 1813 from Return J. Meigs, United States Agent to the Cherokee Indians, to Secretary of War John Armstrong, Jr. concerning the arming of the Cherokees to fight on the side of the Americans in the War of 1812 and against the Red Stick Creeks. Meigs mentions the mounting tensions in the Cherokee Nation due to the war and the Creek uprising. Some Creeks have fled to the Cherokees for safety, and Meigs is concerned about the Red Stick Creeks, who have sided with the British, influencing the Cherokees. The Cherokees, Meigs explains, are loyal to the Americans thus far and feel unsafe without military protection. After speaking with several young chiefs, Meigs believes that the best course of action would be to form Cherokee troops headed by Cherokee officers to fight on the side of the Americans.

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of the Wars of the Early American Republic 1783 1812 3 volumes written by Spencer C. Tucker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 1134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relatively little attention has been paid to American military history between 1783 and 1812—arguably the most formative years of the United States. This encyclopedia fills the void in existing literature and provides greater understanding of how the nation evolved during this era. This encyclopedia offers a comprehensive examination of U.S. military history from the beginning of the republic in 1783 up to the eve of war with Great Britain in 1812. It enables a detailed study of the Early Republic, during which ideological and political divisions occurred over the fledgling U.S. military. The entries cover all the important battles, key individuals, weapons, Indian nations, and treaties, as well as numerous social, political, cultural, and economic developments during this period. The contents of the work will enable readers at the high school, college, university, and even graduate level to comprehend how political parties emerged, and how ideological differences over the organization, size, and use of the military developed. Larger global developments, including Anglo-American and Franco-American interactions, relations between Middle Eastern states and the United States, and relations and warfare between the U.S. government and various Indian nations are also detailed. The extensive and detailed bibliographies will be immensely helpful to learners at all levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving Indian and Euro-American histories together in this groundbreaking book, Sami Lakomäki places the Shawnee people, and Native peoples in general, firmly at the center of American history. The book covers nearly three centuries, from the years leading up to the Shawnees’ first European contacts to the post–Civil War era, and demonstrates vividly how the interactions between Natives and newcomers transformed the political realities and ideas of both groups. Examining Shawnee society and politics in new depth, and introducing not only charismatic warriors like Blue Jacket and Tecumseh but also other leaders and thinkers, Lakomäki explores the Shawnee people’s debates and strategies for coping with colonial invasion. The author refutes the deep-seated notion that only European colonists created new nations in America, showing that the Shawnees, too, were engaged in nation building. With a sharpened focus on the creativity and power of Native political thought, Lakomäki provides an array of insights into Indian as well as American history.
