Book The Great Return Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Great Return Classic Reprint written by Arthur Machen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Return There are strange things lost and forgotten in obscure corners of the newspaper. I often think that the most extraordinary item of intelligence that I have read in print appeared a few years ago in the London Press. It came from a well-known and most respected news agency; I imagine it was in all the papers. It was astounding. The circumstances necessary - not to the understanding of this paragraph, for that is out of the question - but, we will say, to the understanding of the events which made it possible, are these. We had invaded Thibet, and there had been trouble in the hierarchy of that country, and a personage known as the Tashai Lama had taken refuge with us in India. The wise general studies his maps when ordering his battle, and the wise author will first write down his central theme in full detail - and the more expanded his preliminary sketch, the easier will be his subsequent work. Though so grieved, I wept myself to sleep but even in slumber my distress continued, and the break of day found me still engrossed with my sad reminiscences. One of those lovely October suns, that we so loved under our shady trees, shone through my windows, recalling our journey together last year over this same road, in going to Nice, and sweet memories rushed in crowds to my heart, dimming my eyes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mr. Waddy's Return The author did not live to revise the original draft of Mr. Waddy's Return, and therefore, when his other novels were published, shortly after his death, this one was not included. On looking it over again, after the lapse of years, it seemed to his sister, Miss Elizabeth W. Winthrop, too good to let die; and it was placed in the hands of Mr. Stevenson to give it such revision and condensation as it may be presumed that the author, had he lived, would have given it himself. Book The Convert

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elizabeth Robins
  • Publisher : Feminist Press at CUNY
  • Release : 1980
  • ISBN : 9780912670836
  • Pages : 324 pages

Download or read book The Convert written by Elizabeth Robins and published by Feminist Press at CUNY. This book was released on 1980 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Convert is about the British Suffrage movement, which the author knew well. Part witty and scathing commentary on the upper classes, part political rhetoric quoted directly from open-air meetings, and part muck-raking realism, it moves back and forth between the personal and the political until the two can no longer be distinguished. The Convert uses as its frame the political "conversion" of Vida Levering, a beautiful, upper middle-class woman. We follow Vida's growing discontent with "country weekend" society and her increasing awareness of the common lot of women. Forthright and direct, Elizabeth Robins discusses issues that must have been shocking in 1907: unwed motherhood, the effects of the inequality of women, and the essential disrespect that underlies chivalry. Reminiscent of Jane Austen and foreshadowing the work of Virginia Woolf, The Convert is a fascinating novel. It provides us with a sense of history and a feeling of pride in what women could and did accomplish. It is also disturbing because far too many of the issues are still relevant.

Obviously the taxpayer is not entitled to recover or extinguish through amortization more than the difference between the war cost of such property and what he can sell the property for after the war, or if he continues to need and use it in his business, what it would have cost him after the war. As the rule is expressed in Article 183 of the Regulations: The total amount to be extinguished by amortization, in general, is the excess of the unextinguished or unrecovered cost of the property over its maximum value (either for sale or for use as part of the plant or equipment of a going business) under stable post war. There was not a sound in the gloom beyond the spiritless stir of the summer wind. Feeling about for the Obstacle which had flung him down, he discovered that two tufts of heath had been tied together across the path, forming a loop, which to a traveller was certain overthrow. Wildeve pulled off the string that bound them, and went on with tolerable quickness. On reaching home he found the cord to be of a reddish colour. It was just what he had expected. This is no radio or television audience, but a congregation of souls in desperate need of help. Harriet M. Shelton has described this gathering to me with a heart full of compassion. They are, she tells me, those who have left this life and reside in a place of shadows be cause oi transgressions. Some, she says, did not believe in God and the life to come when they were on the earth plane, so they do not realize they have passed over and are free from earthly ties and limitations.
