Book Petrochronology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Matthew J. Kohn
  • Publisher : Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
  • Release : 2019-11-05
  • ISBN : 3110561891
  • Pages : 596 pages

Download or read book Petrochronology written by Matthew J. Kohn and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petrochronology is a rapidly emerging branch of Earth science that links time (ages or rates) with specific rock-forming processes and their physical conditions. It is founded in petrology and geochemistry, which define a petrogenetic context or delimit a specific process, to which chronometric data are then linked. This combination informs Earth’s petrogenetic processes better than petrology or geochronology alone. This volume and the accompanying short courses address three broad categories of inquiry. Conceptual approaches chapters include petrologic modeling of multi-component chemical and mineralogic systems, and development of methods that include diffusive alteration of mineral chemistry. Methods chapters address four main analytical techniques, specifically EPMA, LA-ICP-MS, SIMS and TIMS. Mineral-specific chapters explore applications to a wide range of minerals, including zircon (metamorphic, igneous, and detrital/Hadean), baddeleyite, REE minerals (monazite, allanite, xenotime and apatite), titanite, rutile, garnet, and major igneous minerals (olivine, plagioclase and pyroxenes). These applications mainly focus on metamorphic, igneous, or tectonic processes, but additionally elucidate fundamental transdisciplinary progress in addressing mechanisms of crystal growth, the chemical consequences of mineral growth kinetics, and how chemical transport and deformation affect chemically complex mineral composites. Most chapters further recommend areas of future research.

Book Geofluids

Download or read book Geofluids written by Vratislav Hurai and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-05-14 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geofluids: Developments in Microthermometry, Spectroscopy, Thermodynamics, and Stable Isotopes is the definitive source on paleofluids and the migration of hydrocarbons in sedimentary basins—ideal for researchers in oil and gas exploration. There's been a rapid development of new non-destructive analytical methods and interdisciplinary research that makes it difficult to find a single source of content on the subject of geofluids. Geoscience researchers commonly use multiple tools to interpret geologic problems, particularly if the problems involve fluid-rock interaction. This book perfectly combines the techniques of fluid inclusion microthermometry, stable isotope analyses, and various types of spectroscopy, including Raman analysis, to contribute to a thorough approach to research. Through a practical and intuitive step-by-step approach, the authors explain sample preparation, measurements, and the interpretation and analysis of data related to thermodynamics and mineral-fluid equilibria. - Features working examples in each chapter with step-by-step explanations and calculations - Broad range of case studies aid the analytical and experimental data - Includes appendices with equations of state, stable isotope fractionation equations, and Raman identification tables that aid in identification of fluid inclusion minerals - Authored by a team of expert scientists who have more than 60 years of related experience in the field and classroom combined

Book What Drives Metamorphism and Metamorphic Reactions

Download or read book What Drives Metamorphism and Metamorphic Reactions written by P. J. Treloar and published by Geological Society Publishing House. This book was released on 1998 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it is known that what ultimately drives metamorphism is heat, what is less certain is the distribution of heat within the crust and the rates of heat flux through crustal rocks. This text explores the factors that control metamorphism and the rates of metamorphic processes.

Book The ICDP USGS Deep Drilling Project in the Chesapeake Bay Impact Structure

Download or read book The ICDP USGS Deep Drilling Project in the Chesapeake Bay Impact Structure written by Gregory S. Gohn and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2009 with total page 988 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 2005 and 2006, an international deep drilling project, conceived and organized under the auspices of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program and the U.S. Geological Survey, continuously cored three boreholes to a total depth of 1.766 km near the center of the Chesapeake Bay impact structure in Northampton County, Virginia. This volume presents the initial results of geologic, petrographic, geochemical, paleontologic, geophysical, hydrologic, and microbiologic analyses of the Eyreville cores, which constitute a step forward in our understanding of the Chesapeake Bay impact structure and marine impact structures in general. The editors have organized this extensive volume into the following sections: geologic columns; borehole geophysical studies; regional geophysical studies; crystalline rocks, impactites, and impact models; sedimentary breccias; post-impact sediments; hydrologic and geothermal studies; and microbiologic studies. The multidisciplinary approach to the study of this impact structure should provide a valuable example for future scientific drilling investigations."--Publisher's description.

Book Photo Atlas of Mineral Pseudomorphism

Download or read book Photo Atlas of Mineral Pseudomorphism written by J. Theo Kloprogge and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-08-02 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photo Atlas of Mineral Pseudomorphism provides a comprehensive overview on the topic of pseudomorphism—in which one mineral is replaced by another but still maintains its original crystal form—a phenomenon that is far more common than currently thought and is extremely important in understanding the geologic history of rocks. There are many examples of pseudomorphs, but they have never been brought together in a single reference book that features high-resolution, full-color pseudomorph formations together with the original minerals that they have replaced. This book is the essential reference book for mineralogists, geologists or anyone who encounters mineral pseudomorphism in their work. - 2018 PROSE Awards - Honorable Mention, Earth Science: Association of American Publishers - Presents the only reference book on mineral pseudomorph formations - Contains 500 high-resolution full color photos, along with a theoretical explanation of the geological processes that resulted in the pseudomorph formation - Authored by J. Theo Kloprogge, who has more than 25 years of experience as a mineralogist

Book Ultrahigh Pressure Metamorphism
