Book Retrieval and Organizational Strategies in Conceptual Memory PLE Memory

Download or read book Retrieval and Organizational Strategies in Conceptual Memory PLE Memory written by Janet Kolodner and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Someday we expect that computers will be able to keep us informed about the news. People have imagined being able to ask their home computers questions such as "What’s going on in the world?"...’. Originally published in 1984, this book is a fascinating look at the world of memory and computers before the internet became the mainstream phenomenon it is today. It looks at the early development of a computer system that could keep us informed in a way that we now take for granted. Presenting a theory of remembering, based on human information processing, it begins to address many of the hard problems implicated in the quest to make computers remember. The book had two purposes in presenting this theory of remembering. First, to be used in implementing intelligent computer systems, including fact retrieval systems and intelligent systems in general. Any intelligent program needs to use and store and use a great deal of knowledge. The strategies and structures in the book were designed to be used for that purpose. Second, the theory attempts to explain how people’s memories work and makes predictions about the organization of human memory.

Book It s about Time

Download or read book It s about Time written by Joost Schilperoord and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1996 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A central issue of cognitive studies of text production is What goes on in people's minds when they produce a text?, How do they plan the text?, How do they decide in what order to express their thoughts? In this volume, writers are followed in their footsteps during the moment-to-moment process of producing routine business letters. Their writing processes are explored in real time with the ultimate goal to contribute to a cognitive theory of text production. Such a theory should tell what kind of mental structures underly text production, how these structures are converted into coherent texts, and how this process is framed within real writing time. The study starts from a large corpus of real-life text production processes. It combines methods to explore both process and product of text production. Processes are described by analyzing the pause patterns that emerge in the course of writing. Products are described by analyzing their hierarchical structure. Together, these descriptions yield several significant insights in the real time organization of cognitive processes in production. The study can be characterized as a cognitive linguistic approach to text production. This volume will be of special interest to researchers in the field of (psycho-)linguistics, textlinguistics and cognitive science.

Book Querying a Web of Linked Data

Download or read book Querying a Web of Linked Data written by O. Hartig and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, an increasing number of organizations and individuals have contributed to the Semantic Web by publishing data according to the Linked Data principles. In addition, a significant body of Semantic Web research exists that studies various aspects of knowledge representation and automated reasoning over collections of such data. However, a challenge that is crucial for achieving the vision of a Semantic Web – but that has not yet been studied to a comparable extent – is to enable automated software agents to operate directly on decentralized Linked Data that is distributed over the WWW. In particular, fundamental questions related to querying this data on the WWW have received very limited research attention. This book contributes towards filling this gap by studying the foundations of declarative queries over Linked Data on the WWW. Our particular focus in this book are approaches to use the SPARQL query language and execute queries by traversing Linked Data live during the query execution process. More specifically, we first provide formal foundations to adapt SPARQL to the given context. Thereafter, we use an abstract machine model to formally show computational feasibility and related properties of the resulting types of SPARQL queries. Additionally, we investigate fundamental properties of applying the traversal-based approach to query execution that is tailored to the use case of querying Linked Data directly on the WWW.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: st We welcome you to the proceedings of the 21 International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications held in Bilbao. With information and database s- tems being a central topic of computer science, it was to be expected that the integ- tion of knowledge, information and data is today contributing to the again rapidly increasing attractiveness of this field for researchers and practitioners. Since its foundation in 1990, DEXA has been an annual international conference, located in Europe, which showcases state-of-the-art research activities in these areas. DEXA 2010 continued this tradition and provided a forum for presenting and discu- ing research results in the area of database and intelligent systems and advanced - search topics, applications and practically relevant issues related to these areas. It offered attendees the opportunity to extensively discuss requirements, problems, and solutions in the field in the pleasant atmosphere of the city of Bilbao, which is known for its driving industriousness, its top cultural venues and its rich and inspiring he- tage and lifestyle. The University of Deusto with its great educational and research traditions, and the hospitality which the university and the city are so famous for, set the stage for this year’s DEXA conference. This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at the DEXA conference.
