John the Evangelist was an eyewitness of the events he describes. And since he was both the youngest and the longest-living of the Twelve Apostles, he had a whole lifetime to contemplate the significance of those events.A meditative reading of his words, a lectio divina of John 1, therefore, can be a powerful way to live the season of Advent, which is designed to help us discover afresh the wonder and the meaning of the Incarnation of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And that's exactly what we will do in this Advent Retreat Guide, What Are You Looking For?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two days after Christmas, on December 27th, the Church celebrates the Feast Day of St. John the Evangelist, Jesus' youngest Apostle and the author of the fourth Gospel, three New Testament Letters, and the Book of Revelation. Why in the world do we do such a thing? Isn't Christ's birth itself a big enough celebration to last us for the whole Christmas octave? Is this liturgical pile-on some kind of historical fluke? Not at all.St. John the Evangelist, more than any other of the Eleven Apostles, was wonderfully fascinated by the amazing, marvelous event of God becoming man and living among us. His writings are filled to the brim with this fascination, which is one reason why they play such a central role in the liturgy throughout the Christmas season. St. John is so fascinated with the incarnation, in fact, that there are very good reasons to simply call him the Apostle whose favorite holiday was Christmas. And those reasons are what this Advent Retreat Guide, The Christmas Apostle, will explore.

Book Seven Days with the Gospel of John

Download or read book Seven Days with the Gospel of John written by Joseph G. Donders and published by Twenty-Third Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John's gospel reads like a detective story with its intriguing questions: "What are you looking for?" "What have I done for you?" "Do you love me?" "Do you now believe?" The numerous characters in this story are always in a relationship with Jesus. From the first person to the very last one, they slowly discover who Jesus really is. During this "retreat" Fr. Donders guides us in following the developments -- the ups and downs -- of the discovery made by the persons who surround Jesus. He offers meditations for both morning and evening, as well as points for prayer and action. Here we follow Jesus as he is seen by so many others: in his moments of teaching, healing, suffering, and glory. In so doing we will be drawn into our own story, to learn not only what the life of Jesus is about, but also what our own lives are about. Seven Days with the Gospel of John provides an excellent prayer experience for individuals and groups and serves as a study guide for those who wish to delve more deeply into the most sublime of all the gospel accounts. Book The Identity of John the Evangelist

Download or read book The Identity of John the Evangelist written by Dean Furlong and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the various Johannine narratives found in writings in the period from Papias (early second century) to Eusebius (early fourth century). Dean Furlong argues that the first major revision of the Johannine narrative was the identification of John the Evangelist with John the Apostle, the son of Zebedee, at the beginning of the third century. This in turn initiated a process of reinterpretation, as the previously-separate narratives of the two figures were variously spun into new configurations during the third and fourth centuries. This process culminated with Eusebius’s synthesis of the Johannine traditions, which came to form the basis of what is considered the “traditional” Johannine story. Furlong concludes that in the earliest narrative, found in Papias, John the Evangelist was identified, not with the Apostle, but with another disciple of Jesus known as John the Elder.

Writings on the Gospel and Letters of John spanned his whole career. In tribute to his life and work, St. Mary's Seminary and University, Baltimore, Maryland, hosted a conference in October 2003, "Life in Abundance." The conference did not focus directly on the work of Brown, but followed his lead in discussing the state of Johannine studies, the relation of John to first-century Judaism, and Johannine theology and issues of interpretation. This volume brings together presentations by scholars on these subjects.

Book Rule of the SSJE

    Book Details:
  • Author : Society of Saint John the Evangelist
  • Publisher : Cowley Publications
  • Release : 1997-01-25

Download or read book Rule of the SSJE written by Society of Saint John the Evangelist and published by Cowley Publications. This book was released on 1997-01-25 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians of all denominations are looking today to the ancient discipline of a rule of life to strengthen their sense of living in Christ and participating in a wider community. For the first time the brothers of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist are making their rule—completely rewritten and revised—available to the church at large. The book is composed of 49 short chapters that develop classical monastic themes of hospitality, poverty, celibacy, and obedience, exploring what these might mean to men and women living at the end of the millennium. And because this is a modern rule, it provides guidance and reflection in less traditional areas, too—leadership, conflict, the use and abuse of authority, work, the need for rest and silence, vocation, and fellowship with the poor. Therefore it has much to teach Christians in other kinds of communities, including the family, the parish, and the workplace. Concluding chapters give suggestions for meditating on the Rule and for its use as an aid to discernment and spiritual growth for prayer groups and parish life committees.

Mark tells us about Jesus from the perspective of outsiders, those who, like Jesus, suffered rejection and isolation. He wants you to see how Jesus loves you, and desires to fill you and transform your life. You’ll meet wonderful characters. For example, the father of a boy with epilepsy in Mark 9 who humbly admits his unbelief and cries out for help, and the men in Mark 2 who believe in Jesus enough to want to tear up a roof and lower their friend down on a stretcher for Jesus to heal him. In the end, their stories are our stories. And only as we become like them will we encounter the goodness and love of Jesus.
