Book An 8 Day Ignatian Retreat for Priests Religious and Lay Ministers

Download or read book An 8 Day Ignatian Retreat for Priests Religious and Lay Ministers written by Thomas P. Rausch and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost five hundred years, the little book The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola has been an important source for Christian prayer-life. However, many Church ministers (priests, deacons, religious, and laypersons) do not have the time to make the full thirty-day Ignatian retreat with a spiritual director. This helpful resource seeks to lead a retreatant prayerfully into the heart of an Ignatian retreat by using contemplations and themes from the Spiritual Exercises as well as other meditations on the life of Jesus-but within an eight-day time frame. With a particular focus on ministry, both ordained and nonordained, the short chapters present mysteries from the life of Jesus and considerations that correspond to the dynamics of the Exercises. They represent a preparation for prayer, not to instruct but to move the imagination and hopefully the heart. An appendix offers additional scriptural texts. An 8 Day Ignatian Retreat for Priests, Religious, Deacons, and Lay Ministers enables busy and hardworking Church ministers to apply the Ignatian insights to their own interior life, which will result in rejuvenation and growth in their pastoral ministry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM Cap, preacher to the papal household for over forty years, graciously accepted Pope Francis’s invitation to lead a six-day retreat for the bishops of the United States in January 2019. Shepherds and Fishermen contains the reflections and meditations that guided this gathering, presented in an accessible format for groups and individuals seeking spiritual and ministerial inspiration. Shepherds and Fishermen lifts up the words of Mark 3:14: “He appointed twelve . . . that they might be with him and he might send them forth to preach.” Reflections and meditations offered in lectio divina, homilies, and liturgies focus on what it means to “be with Jesus” while also “going forth to preach.” Retreatants will reflect upon the ways their ministry is dependent upon both personal sanctification and pastoral activity. The twenty-six scripturally based and culturally relevant meditations make Shepherds and Fishermen an ideal companion for a self-directed retreat or a prolonged spiritual exercise. As Jesus’s call to be shepherds of sheep and fishers of men is addressed to every baptized person, the wisdom shared in this book will be treasured by bishops, priests, deacons, religious, candidates, and seminarians, as well as laity who wish to deepen their spiritual lives.

Download or read book A Long Retreat written by Andrew Krivak and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This gorgeously written memoir, A Long Retreat, tells the story of one man's search for his religious calling-a search that led him to the Dominican Republic and Central Europe, to Moscow and the South Bronx, and finally into married life with a woman whose search for God coincided with his own. In 1990 Andrew Krivak-poet, yacht rigger, ocean lifeguard, student of the classics-entered the Society of Jesus. The heart of Jesuit training is the Long Retreat, thirty days of silence and prayer in which the Jesuit novice reflects on the Gospels and tests his desire for the priesthood. For Krivak, eight years of Jesuit formation turned out to be a long retreat in its own right, as he tested all his desires-for poetry, for travel, for independence, for love-against the pledge to do all "for the greater glory of God." And in this deeply affecting book the long retreat becomes a pattern for our own spiritual lives, enabling us to embrace our desire for solitude and perspective in our own circumstances, the way Krivak has in his new life as a husband, father, and writer. The search for God is finally the search for oneself, St. Augustine wrote. Krivak's story pushes past the awful stories of scandal in the Catholic Church to reveal why a modern, forward-looking man would yearn to be a priest. Unlike those stories, it has an happy ending-one in which we can recognize ourselves.

Book excerpt: "Applied Christianity" contains the conferences of a seven-day silent Ignatian retreat first given in the 1930's by Fr. Onesimus Lacouture, S.J. Castle of Grace is publishing the author's third and final edition. The author of this book, Father John J. Hugo, of Pittsburgh, made the retreat under Father Lacouture in 1938 and then went on to teach it regularly, mostly to the laity. The most famous promoter of the retreats was Dorothy Day, co-founder with Peter Maurin of "The Catholic Worker."Father Hugo said that the retreat offers the "complete panorama of the Christian life, in which the relation of the several parts to one another and to the whole is clearly visible." In 1968 Sister M. Angelica, a member of the Sisters of Charity of the Greensburg, Pennsylvania, diocese, wrote of this retreat and Father Hugo's books: "I will always hold this to be the only that work that gave me the full, consistent, integrated, uncompromising teaching on the spiritual life . . . so rooted in the scriptures and spiritual masters - such a work of wisdom. I defy anyone to do this in any other context or framework of the Christian life. Yet, she asked, "But who can take it in this cozy, comfortable age? Will 'Christians' ever be able to 'drink all this straight?' Maybe not till there is a great cosmic purge sent by God. Maybe not then." "Applied Christianity" is for those who seek such a guide for living the Christian life in all the fullness of God's truth. The companion books to the Lacouture/Hugo retreat are also available from Castle of Grace LLC. "You Are Gods!" contains the full conferences of Part One of "Applied Christianity." Fr. Hugo thought that this part needed to be presented in greater detail. "A Sign of Contradiction" contains a history of the retreat. "Nature and the Supernatural" contains Fr. Hugo's rebuttals of various critics who misunderstood the retreat. Each volume contains a foreword by Fr. Hugo's niece, Rosemary Hugo Fielding.
