Por una parte. por más de medio siglo, el turismo ha crecido de manera sostenida en todo el planeta: de unos pocos países y destinos turísticos visitados a mediados del siglo XX llegamos a la actualidad, donde es difícil identificar en cuáles países el turismo no es un tema económicamente relevante. Antes de la pandemia de la COVID-19, el turismo llegó a aportar más del 10 % de la producción global de bienes y servicios. Para entender la dimensión de esta cifra hay que saber que en 2019 el aporte del turismo superó la producción mundial agrícola o minera. Por otra parte, la relación entre los seres humanos y la naturaleza se ha complicado progresivamente en este mismo tiempo. A lo largo de la segunda mitad del siglo XX transitamos un camino en el que la crisis ecológica fue negada. cuestionada, discutida y subestimada por diversos grupos políticos y económicos en casi todas las naciones y de forma sistemática. Sin embargo, en el siglo XXI, las tragedias ecológicas y ambientales —por ejemplo, unas elevadas tasas de extinción de la biodiversidad solo vistas en los procesos pasados de extinción masiva, entre muchos otros ejemplos posibles— han ofrecido evidencias difíciles de controvertir. Así las cosas, la pregunta tiende a dejar de ser si hay o no una crisis ecológica o si podemos detenerla, sino, más bien, cómo nos adaptamos a la crisis ecológica que hemos causado. Sin duda, para países como Colombia, donde el turismo de naturaleza aparece como una potencialidad de desarrollo económico y social muy relevante en el futuro, este es un tema que no debería ignorarse. En consecuencia, esta publicación ofrece seis investigaciones realizadas desde diversas perspectivas disciplinarias y temáticas sobre el turismo de naturaleza en el país. Este esfuerzo integra a investigadores de diversas instituciones, como la Universidad de Guadalajara (México) y el Instituto de Investigaciones Biológicas Alexander von Humboldt. Así mismo. incluye a colaboradores de distintas facultades de la Universidad Externado de Colombia: 1) Ciencias Sociales y Humanas; 2) Finanzas, Gobierno y Relaciones Internacionales; y 3) Administración de Empresas Turísticas y Hoteleras.

En este sentido, la capacidad del turismo para reducir la pobreza no será la misma, dependiendo de cuándo, dónde y cómo esta actividad se desarrolle, pues no se trata solo de generar recursos mediante la actividad turística y ejecutar mecanismos y condiciones para que los ingresos tengan un impacto sobre la reducción de la pobreza. También es necesario desarrollar la actividad turística sin dejar de lado la preservación del medioambiente y los recursos patrimoniales materiales e inmateriales disponibles en el territorio.

In doing so, they generated considerable innovation, which reinforced the integration of the research and outreach functions of the university. The evidence suggests that universities are indeed open systems, in interaction with their environment, able to discover changes that can influence them and to change in response to those changes. They are also able, in the success of their efforts to mitigate the educational impact of the pandemic, to create better futures, as the result of the innovations they can generate. This challenges the view of universities as "ivory towers" being isolated from the surrounding environment and detached from local problems. As they reached out to schools, universities not only generated clear and valuable innovations to sustain educational opportunity and to improve it, this process also contributed to transform internal university processes in ways that enhanced their own ability to deliver on the third mission of outreach

The aim of this monograph was to study a problem that is occurring on a global scale and, above all, in the most developed countries, which is the population emigration from rural areas to urban areas due to the labour and service opportunities offered by the latter. This is causing a demographic deterioration of rural areas, and those that remain show high rates of ageing, masculinisation, or low demographic growth. In addition, and interrelated with this demographic deterioration, there is economic and environmental degradation. Rural areas are territories with increasingly lower purchasing power, job opportunities, and services for the population, which are classified as "spaces in crisis". The papers in this Special Issue evidence the many public and private strategies that are being pursued to achieve sustainable rural development in declining areas. The diversity of approaches offer a vision of the practical application and the obstacles or difficulties that many of them are having to achieve their objectives. All of these strategies are intended to achieve economic dynamism that is respectful of the environment and from there to be able to reduce the regressive demographic processes in rural areas. These are different approaches that allow us to contribute, from scientific, holistic, and multidisciplinary knowledge, and they can help decision making in public policy and planning strategies.
