Among the vertebrates, fishes are a highly successful group, both in number of species and in the adaptive radiation of forms. For instance, 415 teleost families are now recognised (GREENWOOD, ROSEN, WEITZMANN and MYERS, 1966), and the 20,000 odd fish species mentioned in text-books have been by far out numbered. The fish retina also shows considerable variations, in conformity with the extreme morphological diversification reached by piscine forms, in colonising all conceivable aquatic habitats and developing a wide spectrum of life habits. We intend to illustrate this in the present Atlas, a collection of short texts and photomicrographs of the retina from about one hundred fish families. This Atlas is intended also to fulfil other purposes. One of them is to present in a phylogenetic order the rather scattered data on fish retinal structure, with appropriate illustrative material; another is to assist the visual physiologist or biochemist in his search for a retina with particular morpholog ical features compatible with his specific requirements. In other words, what we aim at is a ready pool of information for laymen, students, and specialists of varied interests. The material used for this Atlas comes from various sources.

To some of us the answer seems obvious - how many other visual scientists get to dive in a tropical lagoon in the name of science and then are able to eat their subjects for dinner? However, there are better, or at least scientifically more acceptable, reasons for working on the visual system of fish. First, in terms of numbers, fish are by far the most important of all vertebrate classes, probably accounting for over half (c. 22 000 species) of all recognized vertebrate species (Nelson, 1984). Furthermore, many of these are of commercial importance. Secondly, if one of the research aims is to understand the human visual system, animals such as fish can tell us a great deal, since in many ways their visual systems, and specifically their eyes, are similar to our own. This is fortunate, since there are several techniques, such as intracellular retinal recording, which are vital to our understanding of the visual process, that cannot be performed routinely on primates. The cold blooded fish, on the other hand, is an ideal subject for such studies and much of what we know about, for example, the fundamentals of information processing in the retina is based on work carried out on fish (e. g. Svaetichin, 1953).

Much current work in animal behaviour has concentrated on birds and mammals, animals with ostensibly more complex structure, physiology and behavioural capacity, but there is a growing body of information about the behaviour of fishes. There is now increasing awareness that the same ecological and evolutionary rules govern teleost fish, and that their behaviour is not just a simplified version of that seen in birds and mammals. The details of fish behaviour intimately reflect unique and efficient adaptations to their three-dimensional aquatic environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to ecological variables, the intensity and spectrum of underwater light varies between aquatic habitats and within aquatic habitats over time. As fish encounter different light environments, during ontogenetic migrations or otherwise, their visual systems must compensate in order to survive. Unlike other vertebrates, teleost fish are capable of retinal plasticity and are known to change the distribution and sensitivity of retinal photoreceptors over life. It remains unclear however, how retinal plasticity is regulated: is the timing of retinal change in fish genetically programmed or simply a response to altered environmental light? While light changes associated with ontogenetic migrations may be predicted by the fish visual system, changes to environmental light due to habitat disturbances are more difficult to anticipate. Determining if retinal plasticity is intrinsically or extrinsically controlled will elucidate the phenomenon of retinal plasticity in fishes and indicate the resilience of fish vision to environmental disturbance. Using the Atlantic tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) as a model species, the aims of the study were to (1) determine the relationship between changing environmental light and spectral sensitivity of the retina through ontogeny, (2) determine the capacity of the retina to respond to acute changes in the intensity and spectrum of light. Electroretinography (ERG), opsin gene sequencing, and spectroradiometry were used to study how the spectral sensitivity of M. atlanticus changes during ontogenetic migrations between light environments. Spectroradiometry indicated that the backwater habitat of juveniles was dominated by long-wavelength light, the coastal habitat of adults was dominated by short-wavelength light, and the transitional habitat of the estuary fell between those spectral extremes. Likewise, analysis of opsin gene expression for these two life stages indicated that juveniles express long wavelength-sensitive opsin genes relative to adults. In addition, comparison of opsin gene expression to previously published microspectrophotometry data indicates the use of chromophore interchange by the M. atlanticus retina between life history stages. Analysis by ERG indicated that the spectral sensitivity of juveniles is well-matched to the environmental light of their backwater habitat. The ERG analysis of the sub-adult M. atlanticus indicated a spectral sensitivity not matched to the estuarine habitat from which it was captured, but matched to environmental light of the coastal habitat more typical of mature M. atlanticus. These results suggest that spectral sensitivity change of the retina can occur anticipatorily to forthcoming ontogenetic migrations between habitats. For the experimental portion of the study, ERG, immunofluorescence (IF), and quantitative PCR (qPCR) were used to determine the capacity of the M. atlanticus retina to adjust to acute changes in environmental light quality. In just two- to four-months, an altered light spectrum had an effect on spectral sensitivity, photoreceptor abundance, and opsin gene expression in the juvenile M. atlanticus retina. The effect of altered light intensity on the retina, tested by ERG and IF however, only indicated an effect on white-light sensitivity of the retina, no change in photoreceptor abundance was observed. These results indicate that retinal change in M. atlanticus can occur in response to an altered light environment, but the quality of light and duration of exposure has an impact on the resulting effect on the retina. The relatively short duration in which it took to observe retinal change in M. atlanticus suggests that retinal plasticity in fishes may be able to compensate for light changes associated with habitat disturbances. Taken together, it appears that plasticity of the fish retina is both physiologically programmed and responsive to the environment. The capacity for anticipatory retinal change prior to migration, as well as for a plastic response of the retina to light appear to be the mechanisms by which fishes cope with environmental light variability.

Thus, the questions asked of the retina span virtually every domain of neuroscientific inquiry-molecular, genetic, developmental, behavioral, and evolutionary. Nowhere have the interactions of these levels of analysis been more apparent and borne more fruit than in the last several years of study of the develop ment of the vertebrate retina. Fields of investigation have a natural evolution, rdoving through periods of initial excitement, of framing of questions and controversy, to periods of synthesis and restatement of questions. The study of the development of the vertebrate retina appeared to us to have reached such a point of synthesis. About 130 participants from all the countries of the aJiiance as well as India and Japan attended this event which lasted two weeks. Seventeen of these participants had been invited to present reviews of chosen topics, usually in their specialty. This book is constituted mainly of these presentations, which were prepared as chapters. In addition, six of the participants, whose seminars were found to complement the main chapters, were coopted by the invited lectures/authors to provide additional chapters. Although a lecture was given on electric fields, a chapter on this matter is unfortunately absent due to the lack of preparation time. One may say that Environmental Physiology of Fishes as a discipline originated in Canada. Having been involved as a teacher and worker in this field since 19 54, it was but natural that I was tempted to organise an ASI and get a volume out on the matter. I was encouraged by discussions with colleagues and the acceptance on the part of a large number of eminent colleagues to attend the ASI, deliver lectures and write chapters.

The immediate purpose of the conference was to spark an exchange of ideas, concepts, and techniques among investigators concerned with the different sensory modalities employed by a wide variety of animal species in extracting information from the aquatic environment. By necessity, most investigators of sensory biology are specialists in one sensory system: different stimulus modalities require different methods of stimulus control and, generally, different animal models. Yet, it is clear that all sensory systems have principles in common, such as stimulus filtering by peripheral structures, tuning of receptor cells, signal-to-noise ratios, adaption and disadaptation, and effective dynamic range. Other features, such as hormonal and efferent neural control, circadian reorganization, and receptor recycling are known in some and not in other senses. The conference afforded an increased awareness of new discoveries in other sensory systems that has effectively inspired a fresh look by the various participants at their own area of specialization to see whether or not similar principles apply. This inspiration was found not only in theoretical issues, but equally in techniques and methods of approach. The myopy of sensory specialization was broken in one unexpected way by showing limitations of individual sense organs and their integration within each organism. For instance, studying vision, one generally chooses a visual animal as a model.

Book excerpt: In many parts of vertebrate and invertebrate central nervous systems, groups of nerve or receptor cells can be found that are arranged and connected according to a precise, functionally defined pattern (Braitenberg, 1973; Santini, 1975; Strausfeld, 1976; Chan-Palay, 1977). In these cases, groups of cell bodies or synapses appear as basically similar configurations, which, however, are different in detail from each other. Such abstract patterns of connectivity are of a statistical nature and do not allow, in a given example, for the prediction of the localization or connections of a particular cell. "Wiring diagrams", therefore, can be obtained only from a multitude of individual observations. In contrast, in several sensory organs, concrete patterns occur that con sist of a regular, mosaic-like, and geometric arrangement of similar cell types. The constancy of such a mosaic allows predictions about certain units of the pattern on the basis of only a few exemplary observations. Typical examples are found in the visual system: In the compound eye of insects, each ommatidium contains a definite number of visual cells that are grouped around the optical axis in a hexogonal array (Kirsch feld, 1967); in the vertebrate retina, mosaics of geometrically arranged cones are found most frequently in lower vertebrates; they are common among teleosts. A number of studies have dealt with their phylogenetic significance and their functional role as adaptation to specific environments or modes of feeding.
