He began his teachings in London, England and at the request of General Oglethorpe brought his beliefs and doctrines to the new colony of Savannah, Georgia. Along with his brother Charles and George Whitefield, he originated the Methodist movement in response to the general apathy that characterized the Anglican Church of the early eighteenth century. His story is one of perseverance and personal fortitude with a belief in his Savior. His influence continues today as seen with a large number of Methodist churches in the area, the first orphanage in Georgia founded by one of his constituents, and the world-wide Methodist Church organization.

The Cross and Flame is formally known as the insignia of the United Methodist denomination; it was adopted by the Denomination in 1968, and registered as a trademark in 1971. The insignia features a cross linked with a dual flame. This symbol relates our church to God by way of the second and third persons of the Trinity; the Christ (cross) and the Holy Spirit (flame). Two connotations of the flame are: The flame suggests Pentecost when witnesses saw "tongues as of fire," and the duality of the flame is meant to represent the merger in 1968 of two denominations: The Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church.

Book Rethinking Body Language

Download or read book Rethinking Body Language written by Geoffrey Beattie and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging all of our old assumptions about the subject, Rethinking Body Language builds on the most recent cutting-edge research to offer a new theoretical perspective on this subject that will transform the way we look at other people. In contrast to the traditional view that body language is primarily concerned with the expression of emotions and the negotiation of social relationships, author Geoff Beattie argues instead that gestures reflect aspects of our thinking but in a different way to verbal language. Critically, the spontaneous hand movements that people make when they talk often communicate a good deal more than they intend. This ground-breaking book takes body language analysis to a whole new level. Engagingly written by one of the leading experts in the field, it shows how we can detect deception in gesture–speech mismatches and how these unconscious movements can give us real insight into people's underlying implicit attitudes.

  • Author : N.T. Wright
  • Publisher : InterVarsity Press

Download or read book Justification written by N.T. Wright and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2009-09-25 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical Foundations Book Award Few issues are more central to the Christian faith than the nature, scope and means of salvation. Many have thought it to be largely a transaction that gets one to heaven. In this riveting book, N. T. Wright explains that God's salvation is radically more than this. At the heart of much vigorous debate on this topic is the term the apostle Paul uses in several of his letters to describe what happens to those in Christ--justification. Paul uses this dramatic image from the law court to declare that Christians are acquitted of the cosmic accusations against them. But justification goes beyond this in Paul's writings to offer a vision of God's future for the whole world as well as for his people. Here in one place Wright now offers a comprehensive account and defense of his perspective on this crucial doctrine. He provides a sweeping overview of the central points in the debate before launching into a thorough explanation of the key texts in Paul's writings. While fully cognizant of tradition and controversy, the final authority for his conclusions is the letters of Paul themselves. Along the way Wright responds to critics, such as John Piper, who have challenged what has come to be called the New Perspective. For Wright, what Paul means by justification is nothing less than God's unswerving commitment to the covenant promise he made to bless the whole world through Abraham and his family. This irenic response is an important contribution for those on both sides of the debate--and those still in between--to consider. Whether you're a fan of Wright's work or have read his critics and would like to know the other side of the story, here is a chance to interact with Wright's views on the issues at stake and form your own conclusions.
