Book excerpt: The research investigates the retention of employees in the institutions of higher learning in South Africa. The research is undertaken because employee at one of the institutions are resigning from their positions and join rival institutions and other organizations. This creates a problem on part of students and management. In order to address the purpose of this research, various retention strategies to keep talented employees are discussed, and factors that lead to employees leaving the institutions are also placed under the spotlight. The research reveal that factors such as working environment, personal career development, emotional exhaustion as well as rewards versus performance exacerbate mass exodus of talented employees at the institution. The findings revealed that managers and supervisors play crucial roles in the interpretation and implementation of strategies. Working conditions should be improved so that employees stay with the institution and perform to the best of their ability. Training should be made compulsory for every employee as it provides necessary skills. Best performance and rewards should match performance in order to keep employees at the institution.

IT personnel are essential for higher education institutions to effectively integrate technology into their educational programs. These IT employees contribute to their institution's teaching/learning mission, while simultaneously supporting complex and highly visible administrative operations. Yet, all previous research regarding IT employee retention issues had only been conducted within corporate settings. To examine factors related to IT employees' retention within public higher education, an internet-based study was sent to IT employees in all four-year public universities throughout Michigan. The survey included questions within five overall areas (a) reasons to stay in their current position, (b) reasons to leave their current position, (c) information about former positions, (d) improvement recommendations, and (e) demographic information. Responses from 183 IT employees revealed such individuals stay in their current position because of flexibility and a combination of variables that include respect, supervisor's skills, department communication, training, and the potential to increase their salary. Key reasons IT employees consider leaving their current employment include increased stress, and a combination of variables involving a less relaxed work environment, concerns over health care, sick leave, vacation leave benefits, and limited job security. Key reasons IT employees cited for leaving their former positions were to acquire an advanced degree, job promotion, improved health care, vacation and sick leave benefits, positive co-worker relations, and a more relaxed or flexible work environment. Consistent with research findings within corporate settings, competitive benefits packages are an essential component for the retention of IT employees within higher education. Higher education IT leadership may be able to reduce employee turnover, and increase employee satisfaction and productivity, while reducing retraining expenses by incorporating strategies deemed important via this research.

The number of PHEIs and student enrolment increases yearly as spaces in the public universities is scarce. For quality assurance, high staff turnover has always been a concern in PHEIs. Hence, this research explores the factors affecting job performance and employee engagement for both academic and non-academic staff. A quantitative, self-administered questionnaire was employed in this research. 200 respondents from the top ten PHEIs participated in this study. Career development, employee engagement and work-life balance were found to have significant relationships with employee retention and job performance.

At that juncture, HEIs need to cultivate strategies to attract, develop and retain their best people through an effective talent management and succession planning practices. The new era of development in the higher education industry in Malaysia brings the researcher to identify why the right people are needed to serve HEIs at the right time. When these people start leaving, it is an indication that the HEIs are in trouble. This matter has also been also highlighted since Malaysian HEIs are fronting talent deficiency and high turnover. Thus, this study investigates the relationship of talent management practices and succession planning practices at Malaysian HEIs towards employee retention. Those practices were determined according to their level of effectiveness. In addition, this study also determines the mediating effect of employee engagement and career development on the relationship between talent management and employee retention at Malaysian HEIs. Moreover, this study determines the mediating effect of employee engagement and career development on the relationship between succession planning and employee retention at Malaysian HEIs. Employees who are eager to retain in the organisations feel more influential when they are engaged and satisfied with their career development goal. For this study, proportionate stratified sampling was employed. The respondents who represented the employees of HEIs were selected from each stratum of three groups of public universities in Malaysia (research universities, comprehensive universities and focus universities). The data collection for this study was carried out through self-administered questionnaires. The data collected was processed using computer software; Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 19.0 and Analysis of Moment Structure (AMOS) version 20.0. There were thirteen hypotheses examined in this study. The results indicate that talent management and succession planning practices were effective at HEIs. Most importantly, there is a significant influence of effective talent management and succession planning towards employee retention. Furthermore, the findings partially support the hypotheses on mediating effects. Employee engagement and career development mediates the relationship of talent management and succession planning towards employee retention. Undoubtedly, employees who are engaged and whose careers are being developed to be more likely to report higher levels of retention. The useful guidelines for human resource management practices in the present and future Malaysian HEIs can be outlined based on the results of this study.
