Book excerpt: The Latina/o population constitutes the largest racial and ethnic minority group in the U.S. and is disproportionately under-represented in college and in graduate programs. This is the first book specifically to engage with the absence of Latinas/os in doctoral studies. It proposes educational and administrative strategies to open up the pipeline, and institutional practices to ensure access, support, models and training for Latinas/os aspiring to the Ph.D. The under-education of Latina/o youth begins early. Given that by twelfth grade half will stop out or be pushed out of high school, and only seven percent will complete a college degree, it is not surprising so few enter graduate studies. When Latina/o students do enter higher education, few attend those colleges or universities that are gateways to graduate degrees. Regardless of the type of higher education institution they attend, Latinas/os often encounter social and academic isolation, unaffordable costs, and lack of support.This historic under-representation has created a vicious cycle of limited social and economic mobility. There is a paucity of the Latina/o faculty and leaders whom research shows are essential for changing campus climate and influencing institutions to adapt to the needs of a changing student body. As a result, Latina/o graduate students often have few role models, advocates or mentors, and limited support for their research agendas.By reviewing the pipeline from kindergarten through university, this book provides the needed data and insights to effect change for policy makers, administrators, faculty, and staff; and material for reflection for aspiring Latina/o Ph.D.s on the paths they have taken and the road ahead.The book then addresses the unique experiences and challenges faced by Latina/os in doctoral programs, and offers guidance for students and those responsible for them. Chapters cover issues of gender and generational differences, the role of culture in the graduate school, mentorship, pursuing research, and professional development opportunities for Latina/os.The book closes with the voices of by Latina/o students who are currently pursuing or recently completed their doctoral degree. Book excerpt: There is a national concern for the successful completion of the doctoral degree in graduate programs that needs attention because approximately half of doctoral students earn the degree and the other half of doctoral students do not attain the degree. Furthermore, the completion rate for a doctoral degree is much lower for African Americans/Blacks and Hispanics whom are largely represented as first-generation. First-generation African Americans/Blacks and Hispanics have been reported as less likely to pursue a doctoral degree, and their experiences in the doctoral program have been less documented. The literature review reviews characteristics of recipients and non-recipients of the doctoral degree, enrollment status in graduate school, and experiences of those enrollees. Seen in this light, first-generation African Americans/Blacks and Hispanics-documented as less likely to enroll in graduate school and even less likely to be recipients of the doctoral degree-are viewed as being disadvantaged by virtue of the characteristics they hold upon entering the program, which influences the doctoral experience. However, this dissertation set forth to view this population's experience influenced by specific interactions emphasizing their racial/ethnic and first-generation identities. The theories of symbolic interactionism, resilience and practice assisted in conceptualizing the participants' doctoral experiences. The study was a qualitative narrative inquiry in which experiences turned into stories were told by four first-generation African Americans/Blacks and Hispanics pursuing their doctoral degree in Education. As seen through their eyes, participants interpreted their experiences from a symbolic interactionism perspective related to the interrelationships between their own behavior and the educational environment. In other words, participants analyzed how interactions that occurred in a particular place and time shaped their experience as first-generation doctoral students of color. The author's interest was not to compare African Americans/Blacks with Hispanics in pursuit of the doctoral degree. Rather, the interest rested with getting to know shared and divergent experiences among the participants to understand their journey in pursuit of the doctoral degree.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ivory Tower is and can often be a lonely place for faculty of color. Social injustices run deep and are entrenched within academia. Faculty of color (FOC), more specifically Black and Hispanic, often lament about the ‘Black/Brown’ tax that frequently takes its toll both personally and professionally, and pushes them out of the academy. Similar to trends in P?12 settings, educators of color in postsecondary contexts represent less than 10% of the profession. In essence, we are an anomaly and the implications of this are clear and dire, as evidenced by persistent achievement, access, and expectation gaps within the academy. Scholars of color (SOC), at all stages, but particularly during doctoral training, frequently struggle to not just survive, but to thrive, in the academy. Too many fail to earn their doctoral degree, with many wearing the All But Dissertation (ABD) as a badge of honor. Although ABD is not a degree, many scholars of color receive inadequate mentoring, often substandard in comparison to the hand?holding White students receive, which leaves far too many doctoral students of color lost, bewildered, angry, indignant, and defeated. This righteous indignation is justified, but excused away using the myth of meritocracy and colorblind notions of success; followed by a myriad of problems steeped with victim blaming, as noted in the classic Presumed Incompetent: The Intersections of Race and Class for Women in Academia (Gutiérrez y Muhs, Niemann, González, & Harris, 2012). The aforementioned work was not the first treatise on higher education and how the non?status quo, along with those grappling with oppression and double standards, experience the profession called higher education. Moreover, The Chilly Climate (Sandler, Silverberg, & Hall, 1996) report, which focused on females, was also telling, but not enough was addressed and disclosed about females of color, until version two. But these issues do not stop with females of color, but instead, extend to all faculty of color. R.A.C.E. Mentoring, a social media Facebook group, with several subgroups (see Figures 1 and 2) was created by Donna Y. Ford, Michelle Trotman Scott, and Malik S. Henfield in 2013, to tackle the numerous thorny and contentious issues and challenges in higher education. We began by intentionally attending to the needs of students enrolled at mostly White universities, as well as those who attended historically Black colleges and universities, while keeping the unique nuances and challenges of each setting in mind. We wanted scholars of color to thrive in both. Fondly and affectionately called RM, our charge and challenge is to affirm the dignity and worth of scholars of color. Additionally, we recognize that there are scholars outside of academe, and their contributions as well to impact and affect change for Black and Brown people inside and outside of academe need to be acknowledged. These scholars are community organizers, activists, P?12 teachers, and families. It truly takes a village...

Book excerpt: According to the United States Census Bureau (2005), Hispanics are the youngest and largest minority group in the country. Unfortunately, Hispanics have the largest drop-out rates of any major ethnic group in the US, which will result in fewer Hispanics entering Ph. D. programs (Yosso & Solorzano, 2006). Because of this doctoral achievement gap among Hispanic students, this dissertation investigated how higher education administration, educational policies, and programs for doctoral students can help address the obstacles and promote retention and graduation of Hispanic Ph. D. students. A 14-question survey addressed the independent variables related to perceived influence of use, perceived frequency of use, and perceived importance of use of social, support, financial, and other institutional programs that either directly or indirectly address Hispanic doctoral students. According to a Pearson correlational analysis of the data collected, no relationship existed between the independent variables and the dependent variable, percent change in doctoral degrees awarded to Hispanic students. Follow-up questions provided qualitative data that were analyzed through coding, from which the major themes of geographic location, differences in general diversity programs versus Hispanic-focused policies and programs, public versus private control, and issues of adequate versus inadequate funding. Suggestions for future research and implications follow from these findings and themes. Based on the results, the dissertation concludes that in contrast to what some models suggest and what many administrators believe about the value of programs for recruitment and admissions, academic services, curriculum and instruction, student services, and financial aid, the existence and perceived importance, influence, and frequency of use of such programs did not actually correlate with a positive change in the percentage of Ph. D. degrees completed by Hispanic doctoral students.

Book excerpt: Exploratory in nature, this two-stage institutional case study was conducted in response to the declining participation of Blacks and Hispanics in higher education, particularly at predominantly White colleges and universities (PWCUs). The retention/attrition literature, suggest Black and Hispanic problematic student-institution interactions, questionable academic and social integration, and a uniquely tenuous "fit" at PWCUs. The researcher's intent was to test the validity of the interaction theoretical framework by documenting the experience of Black and Hispanic undergraduates for a five-year period at one large, predominantly White institution in the Southwest. In Stage I, (1) four successive (1982-85) cohorts (2,278) of Black, Hispanic, and White first-time full time undergraduates were identified in order to ascertain in enrollment, persistence and degree attainment rates and trends and (2) cohorts were divided by persistence status, race/ethnicity and gender to permit development of persisting and nonpersisting student profiles using selected demographic, academic and involvement characteristics. In Stage II, a sample of persisting and nonpersisting Black and Hispanic students were surveyed by telephone using a researcher constructed Environmental Evaluation.
