Book Capital Saving and Credit in Peasant Societies

Download or read book Capital Saving and Credit in Peasant Societies written by A. H. Black and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary problems of economic and social change have obliged social scientists from different fields to learn much about each others' work as well as about the specific problems they are together seeking to solve. The bearing of economic conditions on the character of a social system has become more apparent to anthropologists, and, similarly, economists have become more aware of the relevance of social factors to economic decisions. This pioneering book is at the point of contact between these two disciplines, presenting detailed studies from many societies of the interaction between social and economic relationships. The studies in this volume--all by social anthropologists --focus on the formation and management of capital, since this process is central to the economic functioning and growth of all societies. With this central theme, the essays cover a very wide geographic range and an equally wide range of social and economic structures. The book begins with an essay by Firth, who provides an extended outline discussion of the main problems and issues to be covered, and ends with an essay by Yamey, who provides summarizing comments and queries. The volume will be especially useful to those concerned with the problems and prospects of economic and social change in underdeveloped areas, in addition to economists and anthropologists concerned with what each can learn from the other.

Book The Political Economy of Land Acquisition in India

Download or read book The Political Economy of Land Acquisition in India written by Dhanmanjiri Sathe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-06 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines key issues concerning land acquisition, and puts forward policy suggestions. Land acquisition is one of the most important issues besetting India’s political economy today. There have been many conflicts surrounding acquisitions; but there have been ample peaceful acquisitions, too. Growth in any economy requires more land. Hence in India too, in the future more and more land will be required for the purposes of infrastructure expansion, industrialization, urbanization etc. The book also examines a number of broader policy issues in the context of land reforms and shows how a successful resolution of the land acquisition matter is vital to attaining a high rate of growth. Using a case study method, the book examines the process of land acquisition in detail and its implications for farmers. It finds that the development of acquired land leads to higher growth and higher employment; and it also leads to improvements for the dalits (the backward class p eople). Benefits in terms of higher revenues for the government are also observed. It argues that, if the acquisition process is properly executed, those farmers who lose land will not oppose acquisition but will instead become partners in the process of growth.

Download or read book Human Migration written by J. J. Mangalam and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this guide to the literature on human migration, J.J. Mangalam indexes over 2,000 titles that appeared in English from 1955 through 1962. An important feature of this work is the annotation of nearly 400 major articles on migration. These annotations provide information on the main focus of the study, the hypotheses tested, and any special measuring devices employed. The conclusions are also given, using the authors' words whenever possible. To facilitate the use of this guide the author has compiled an index that lists not only the subjects treated but also the major variables used in each abstracted study; thus the researcher who is interested in the use of certain variables can easily refer to the previous investigation of the influence of these factors upon migration. In a comprehensive introduction, Mangalam surveys the current state of studies of human migration and suggests a theoretical framework by which the vast amount of existing facts from different migration studies can be integrated and given meaning.
