Book excerpt: In this dissertation American World War II memorials function as locations for an examination of how Americans use meanings about World War II for socio-political purposes in the present. The central focus of this study is the 2004 neo-classical revivalist National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.I argue that the site, design, and dedication rhetoric of the National Memorial were used as political propaganda by leading social groups to gain the public's support and military volunteerism for the Iraq War in the wake of 9-11. I also argue that the homogeneous nature, shared socio-political ideology, and the practice of official memorial task force members worked simultaneously to promote their own exclusive political self-interests, those of the Bush/Cheney administration, and the predominantly neo-conservative Republican Congress; those leading groups responsible for decisions to engage America in global wars. Main objectives are to determine: why a revival of neo-classicism with associations to past imperialist Greco-Roman ancient and twentieth century Fascist societies; why the use of traditional, albeit pared down, architectural style in light of and in opposition to the 1982 modern minimalist and internationally popular Vietnam Veterans Memorial; who selected what histories and whose memories to circulate and distribute around the National Memorial for public reception and consumption. To realize these objectives, the form and content of the National Memorial are compared to those of other American World War II memorial patterns to determine if it fits into past traditions and meanings, or if in fact, it is an anomaly. If so, for what socio-political uses does it serve the present volatile post-9/11 era and for whom does it resonate?

The epistemological ambivalence of the war memorial lies at the heart of the analysis of the selected novels, films and plays, for the condemnation of a military conflict as a historical evil does not necessarily exclude the possibility of honouring the men who fought in it.

Although the tale often flows surreal and adventuresome, the perceptive reader is apt to capture meanings aloft, and intellectualize on individualism, free will and defense of humanness, interwoven in the fabric of this spiritual fantasy.

Her fall and redemption parallel that found in versions of the Sophia myth such as that in the Apocryphon of John, but the actions all take place in the material aeons, and she can only be restored to her place in the thirteenth aeon, outside the Kingdom of Light. The Pistis Sopha is a startling blend of early Christianity and Hellenic Paganism, with other elements such as reincarnation, Astrology, Mystery religion and Hermetic magic.

Book excerpt: The toppling of monuments globally in the last few years has highlighted the potency of monuments as dynamic and affectively loaded participants in society. In the context of Ottawa, Canada’s capital city, monuments inspire colonial and imperial nostalgia, compelling visitors to consistently re-imagine Canada as a white, Anglophone nation, built through the labour of white men: politicians, soldiers, and businessmen. At the same time, Ottawa monuments allow for dominant affective relationships to the nation to be challenged, demonstrated through subtle and explicit forms of defacement and other interactions that compel us to remember colonial violence, pacifism, violence against women, racisms. Organized as a series of walking tours throughout Ottawa, the chapters in Tours Inside the Snow Globe demonstrate the affective capacities of monuments and highlight how these monuments have ongoing relationships with their sites, the city, other monuments, and local, deliberate, national, and casual communities of users. The tours focus on the lives of a monument to an unnamed Indigenous scout, the National War Memorial, Enclave: the Women’s Monument, and the Canadian Tribute to Human Rights. Two of the tours offer analyses of the ambivalent representations of women and Indigeneity in Ottawa’s statue landscape.
