Book excerpt: Although the animal may be, as Nietzsche argued, ahistorical, living completely in the present, it nonetheless plays a crucial role in human history. The fascination with animals that leads not only to a desire to observe and even live alongside them, but to capture or kill them, is found in all civilizations. The essays collected in Beastly Natures show how animals have been brought into human culture, literally helping to build our societies (as domesticated animals have done) or contributing, often in problematic ways, to our concept of the wild. The book begins with a group of essays that approach the historical relevance of human-animal relations seen from the perspectives of various disciplines and suggest ways in which animals might be brought into formal studies of history. Differences in species and location can greatly affect the shape of human-animal interaction, and so the essays that follow address a wide spectrum of topics, including the demanding fate of the working horse, the complex image of the American alligator (at turns a dangerous predator and a tourist attraction), the zoo gardens of Victorian England, the iconography of the rhinoceros and the preference it reveals in society for myth over science, relations between humans and wolves in Europe, and what we can learn from society’s enthusiasm for "political" animals, such as the pets of the American presidents and the Soviet Union’s "space dogs." Taken together, these essays suggest new ways of looking not only at animals but at human history. Contributors Mark V. Networked Virtual Environments (NVEs) are systems that allow distant users to interact in a common Virtual Environment. One of the areas of research in NVEs is the user representation or 'avatar', the way that participants are geographically represented in Virtual Environments. * Examines solutions to the Virtual Life Network (VLNET) system, a flexible framework for Virtual Humans in NVEs * Presents different means of facial communication, gesture and non-verbal communication * Provides details for solving all problems of handling Virtual Human data across the network * Analyses the potential relation of the future MPEG-4 standard to NVEs * Discusses the standardisation of Virtual Humans in VRML * Includes applications such as a Virtual tennis game and studies the experimental results and achievements. Essential reading for a wide-ranging audience including computer scientists, engineers in communication systems, undergraduate and postgraduate students of computer science, and researchers in computer animation, visualisation and communications technology.

Book Transdisciplinarity Joint Problem Solving among Science Technology and Society

Download or read book Transdisciplinarity Joint Problem Solving among Science Technology and Society written by J. Thompson Klein and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What kind of science do we need today and tomorrow? In a game that knows no boundaries, a game that contaminates science, democracy and the market economy, how can we distinguish true needs from simple of fashion? How can we distinguish between necessity and fancy? whims How can we differentiate conviction from opinion? What is the meaning of this all? Where is the civilizing project? Where is the universal outlook of the minds that might be capable of counteracting the global reach of the market? Where is the common ground that links each of us to the other? We need the kind of science that can live up to this need for univer sality, the kind of science that can answer these questions. We need a new kind of knowledge, a new awareness that can bring about the creative destruction of certainties. Old ideas, dogmas, and out-dated paradigms must be destroyed in order to build new knowledge of a type that is more socially robust, more scientifically reliable, stable and above all better able to express our needs, values and dreams. What is more, this new kind of knowledge, which will be challenged in turn by ideas yet to come, will prove its true worth by demonstrating its capacity to dialogue with these ideas and grow with them.
