Book excerpt: Scientists from the Alaska Fisheries Science Center conducted an acoustic-trawl survey in early March 2016 to estimate the abundance of pre-spawning walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) in the southeastern Aleutian Basin near Bogoslof Island. This report summarizes the observed pollock distribution and biological information, and provides an abundance estimate used for stock assessment. The estimated abundance for pollock in 2016 was 866 million fish weighing 507 thousand tons, which is a 665% increase in abundance and a 352% increase in biomass from the 2014 survey estimates. The pollock population was dominated by younger fish; 91% were less than 51 cm and 97% were less than 9 years of age. Most of the fish were from the 2009 year class, which was not a strong year class in the eastern Bering Sea or the Gulf of Alaska. Second in importance were fish from the 2012 year class, which was a strong year class in the eastern Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska. Book Marine Geomorphometry

Download or read book Marine Geomorphometry written by Vanessa Lucieer and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geomorphometry is the science of quantitative terrain characterization and analysis, and has traditionally focused on the investigation of terrestrial and planetary landscapes. However, applications of marine geomorphometry have now moved beyond the simple adoption of techniques developed for terrestrial studies, driven by the rise in the acquisition of high-resolution seafloor data and by the availability of user-friendly spatial analytical tools. Considering that the seafloor represents 71% of the surface of our planet, this is an important step towards understanding the Earth in its entirety. This volume is the first one dedicated to marine applications of geomorphometry. It showcases studies addressing the five steps of geomorphometry: sampling a surface (e.g., the seafloor), generating a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) from samples, preprocessing the DTM for subsequent analyses (e.g., correcting for errors and artifacts), deriving terrain attributes and/or extracting terrain features from the DTM, and using and explaining those terrain attributes and features in a given context. Throughout these studies, authors address a range of challenges and issues associated with applying geomorphometric techniques to the complex marine environment, including issues related to spatial scale, data quality, and linking seafloor topography with physical, geological, biological, and ecological processes. As marine geomorphometry becomes increasingly recognized as a sub-discipline of geomorphometry, this volume brings together a collection of research articles that reflect the types of studies that are helping to chart the course for the future of marine geomorphometry.

Book Results of the Acoustic Trawl Survey of Walleye Pollock Gadus Chalcogrammus in the Western Central Gulf of Alaska June August 2011 DY2011 03

Download or read book Results of the Acoustic Trawl Survey of Walleye Pollock Gadus Chalcogrammus in the Western Central Gulf of Alaska June August 2011 DY2011 03 written by Darin Jones and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists from the Midwater Assessment and Conservation Engineering (MACE) Program of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center's (AFSC) Resource Assessment and Conservation Engineering (RACE) Division conducted an acoustic-trawl (AT) stock assessment survey of the western Gulf of Alaska (GOA) shelf to estimate the distribution and abundance of walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) in summer 2011. Previous partial surveys of the GOA were also conducted during the summers of 2003 and 2005 by MACE. The 2011 survey covered the shelf from the Islands of Four Mountains to the Chiniak Trough east of Kodiak Island including many associated bays and troughs. The biomass estimate for the entire survey area was 452,950 t. The majority of the adult pollock observed was located on the continental shelf (45%), Shelikof Strait (35%), and east of Kodiak Island in Chiniak (8%) and Barnabas Troughs (7%). Large numbers of age-1 walleye pollock (26% of Shelikof pollock biomass) were mixed with older fish in Shelikof Strait. Fish weight at length was similar to surveys conducted in the summer GOA in previous years. Backscatter was attributed to other species where possible. Biomass estimates were also calculated for capelin (Mallotus villosus, 27,920 t) and Pacific ocean perch (Sebastes alutus, 303,360 t), and relative abundance and distribution was estimated for euphausiids (primarily consisting of Thysanoessa inermis, but also including T. spinifera, T. raschii, and Euphausia pacifica).

Book excerpt: In the 1970's the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) was made to manage our oceanic and atmospheric resources. The Alaska Fisheries Science Center is the research branch for marine life and coastal oceans off parts of the U.S. west coast and Alaska. This includes the Eastern Bering Sea where some the worlds most important commercial fishing takes place. Their mission is to develop and maintain scientific exploration to help understand and manage that region's environment. Over the years there have been many reports published which discuss their findings; this is one of them.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eastern Bering Sea shelf walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) midwater abundance and distribution were assessed from Bristol Bay in the United States, to Cape Navarin, Russia, between 7 June and 10 August 2012 using acoustic-trawl techniques aboard the NOAA ship Oscar Dyson. Most of the pollock biomass in the U.S. exclusive economic zone (EEZ) was distributed between the Pribilof Islands and Cape Navarin, between roughly the 80 m and 200 m isobaths. Estimated pollock abundance in midwater (between 16 m from the surface and 3 m off bottom) in the U.S. EEZ portion of the Bering Sea shelf was 1.843 million metric tons (t), lower than in 2010 (2.323 million t) but higher than in 2009 or 2008 (0.924 million t, and 0.997 million t, respectively). Pollock biomass east of 170° W was 0.279 million t, the predominant length mode was 47-48 cm, and most ages ranged between 4 and 7 years. In the U.S. waters west of 170° W, pollock biomass was 1.563 million t (65.4% of total shelf-wide biomass), and dominant modal lengths were 23, 38, and 30 cm, corresponding to pollock aged 2, 4, and 3 years, respectively. In Russia (0.550 million t, 23% of total biomass), modal lengths and ages were similar, though generally smaller and younger than those in the U.S. waters west of 170° W. Vertical distribution analyses indicated that whereas 80-90% of the adults were within 50 m of the bottom only about 60% of the juveniles were observed in that depth layer. Results of a paired (midwater-bottom) trawl efficiency comparison project are presented. The preliminary spatial distribution of the euphausiid abundance index is presented, but analyses are still in progress"--Abstract.
