Book excerpt: This title brings to light the discoveries and insights into the lives of many marine species made possible over the last decade by passive acoustic recorders (PAR). Pop-ups, ARF, HARP, EAR, Bprobe, C-POD Atag, and Dtag are the acronyms of some of the many PARs that have changed our understanding of how marine animals live and strive in the ocean. Various types of PARs are used by different investigators in different areas of the world. These recorders have accumulated copious amounts of very important data, unveiling previously unknown information about large marine animals. Temporal, seasonal and spatial distribution patterns have been uncovered for many marine species. There have been many discoveries, new understandings and insights into how these animals live in and utilize the ocean and the importance of acoustics in their lives. Listening Within the Ocean summarizes these important discoveries, providing both a valuable resource for researchers and enjoyable reading for non-professionals interested in marine life.

Book Identifying and Comparing Important Areas for Marine Sustainable Use and Conservation

Download or read book Identifying and Comparing Important Areas for Marine Sustainable Use and Conservation written by Sofie Van Parijs and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-05-24 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ocean is under increasing threat from the expansion of human activities. The combined impacts of these threats as well as the potential impacts of climate change and ocean acidification have placed thousands of species at risk of extinction, and have impaired the structure, function, productivity and resilience of marine ecosystems. Currently, some parts of the world's oceans are significantly impacted, yet are without any form of effective management. Only a small proportion of the oceans are within protected area systems. Globally, measures are being taken to increase protection and sustainable management, but application is uncoordinated and not always effective. In order to support effective policy action by countries and competent international and regional organizations, it is critical to build a sound understanding of the most ecologically and biologically important ocean areas that support healthy marine ecosystems so that the necessary steps to ensure the long-term function and resilience of these systems can be taken.

Book The Use of an Instrumented Marine Mammal as an Oceanographic Survey Platform

Download or read book The Use of an Instrumented Marine Mammal as an Oceanographic Survey Platform written by William Eugene Evans and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper reports the second phase of an effort to use instrumented marine mammals to measure selected environmental parameters and to relay data on these parameters to tracking aircraft and ultimately to orbiting satellites. A Pacific common dolphin, Delphinus delphis, was fitted with an instrument package and tracked from shipboard and from specially equipped Navy S-2D aircraft. The preferability of smaller odontocetes over larger mystictes as environmental survey platforms was demonstrated. Data collected compared favorably with data from previous radio tracks and with on-site measurements using conventional sampling techniques. Maximum transmitter range and optimum tracking and data collection altitudes were demonstrated for present systems. (Author).

Book Analysis of Acoustic Effects on Marine Mammals for the Proposed Undersea Warfare Training Range

Download or read book Analysis of Acoustic Effects on Marine Mammals for the Proposed Undersea Warfare Training Range written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Navy is preparing a Draft Environmental Impact Statement/Overseas Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS/OEIS) for the proposed Undersea Warfare Training Range (USWTR). The DEIS includes an assessment of the effects of Navy sonars on marine mammals during exercises to occur on the range as required by the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division, Newport, RI, has completed this assessment for three sites: the preferred site of Onslow Bay, NC, and the alternate sites of Wallops Island, VA, and Jacksonville, FL. This document describes the modeling approach, input data, and analysis method employed to estimate the number of marine mammals that could be affected by operation of Navy tactical sonar systems at the USWTR. The input data that are key to this methodology fall into five categories: (1) Marine mammal density estimates for the proposed range locations, (2) Definitions for Level A and Level B harassment thresholds for Navy sonar systems, (3) Geophysical data for the sites, (4) Characterization of Navy training scenarios and the military sonars to be used, and (5) Operational characteristics for the sonar systems to be used (many of these parameters are classified). The Marine Mammal Effects Model calculates an area for which each source produces a total energy flux (also referred to as total acoustic energy or total energy flux density) above the defined Level A and Level B harassment thresholds. This is calculated for each combination of training scenario, source, and season. This area is multiplied by the mammal population density for each species and the number of scenario occurrences per year to determine the estimated number of takes that will occur annually. Data are summarized by harassment thresholds for the respective sonar system, scenario, and species. A summary of the input data for the methodology is provided in figure 1-1, and a flow chart for the modeling is shown in figure 1-2.

Book Marine Mammal Populations and Ocean Noise

Download or read book Marine Mammal Populations and Ocean Noise written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-01-24 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention has been drawn to the subject of how ocean noise affects marine mammals by a series of marine mammal strandings, lawsuits, and legislative hearings, and most recently, the report from the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy. One way to assess the impact of ocean noise is to consider whether it causes changes in animal behavior that are "biologically significant," that is, those that affect an animal's ability to grow, survive, and reproduce. This report offers a conceptual model designed to clarify which marine mammal behaviors are biologically significant for conservation purposes. The report is intended to help scientists and policymakers interpret provisions of the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Download or read book Marine Mammals and Noise written by W. John Richardson and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many marine mammals communicate by emitting sounds that pass through water. Such sounds can be received across great distances and can influence the behavior of these undersea creatures. In the past few decades, the oceans have become increasingly noisy, as underwater sounds from propellers, sonars, and other human activities make it difficult for marine mammals to communicate. This book discusses, among many other topics, just how well marine mammals hear, how noisy the oceans have become, and what effects these new sounds have on marine mammals. The baseline of ambient noise, the sounds produced by machines and mammals, the sensitivity of marine mammal hearing, and the reactions of marine mammals are also examined. An essential addition to any marine biologist's library, Marine Mammals and Noise will be especially appealing to marine mammalogists, researchers, policy makers and regulators, and marine biologists and oceanographers using sound in their research.
