Book excerpt: Nine drop tests of a 63-ft-diameter Para-Sail gliding parachute were conducted at the Joint Parachute Test Facility, El Centro, California during the period from February through July, 1966. The canopy was tested with a 5000-lb suspended load, and was deployed at altitudes of 10,000 and 18,000 feet in both a horizontal and vertical flight path. A two-stage mid-gore reefing system was developed which limited opening loads to less than 20,000 pounds at 80 psf dynamic pressure. The parachute demonstrated a sea-level rate of descent of 29 ft/sec and a lift/drag ratio of 1.0. A description of the parachute system and sequence of events is presented for each test, together with reduced test data showing deployment conditions, parachute opening loads, and steady-stste performance.

Experienced recovery system engineers will find this publication useful as a technical reference book; recent college graduates will find it useful as a textbook for learning about parachutes and parachute recovery systems; and technicians with extensive practical experience will find it useful as an engineering textbook that includes a chapter on parachute- related aerodynamics. In this manual, emphasis is placed on aiding government employees in evaluating and supervising the design and application of parachute systems. The parachute recovery system uses aerodynamic drag to decelerate people and equipment moving in air from a higher velocity to a lower velocity and to a safe landing. This lower velocity is known as rate of descent, landing velocity, or impact velocity, and is determined by the following requirements: (1) landing personnel uninjured and ready for action, (2) landing equipment and air vehicles undamaged and ready for use or refurbishment, and (3) impacting ordnance at a preselected angle and velocity.
