Book excerpt: "In September 2000, experts on the effects of selenium on fish and wildlife in North America were invited to a two-day technical workshop in Hinton, Alberta. The main goals of the workshop were to review the Alberta results and develop workplans to address data and knowledge gaps. Alberta Environment initiated several studies based on the workshop and discussions in the Selenium Working Group. The focus of the Alberta Environment studies was to conduct ambient monitoring and determine the fate and potential effects of selenium in flowing-water systems surrounding the mines. Specific objectives of the studies were to: 1. Continue and establish new ambient monitoring of selenium and other metals at sites near the CRC, Gregg River and Smoky River mines, including pairs of reference and exposed sites in stream systems that flow through the mines. 2. Determine the concentrations of selenium in surface water and components of the aquatic food web (i.e., sediment, biofilm, benthic macroinvertebrates and other nonfish biota) in flowing-water systems, and to compare these data in a conceptual food web for streams near the mines. 3. Conduct a pilot study to determine selenium concentrations at old, closed or abandoned coal mines in the Rocky Mountain foothills of south-western Alberta. This report is a compilation and summary of data collected in the Alberta Environment studies from 1998 to 2003. Available data before 1998 are also used to illustrate longer-term trends for selenium at key sites in the McLeod River, and limited samples from lakes are included for comparative information."--Document.

Compared with other books on the topic, this book has a unique outline in that it follows pollution from sources to impact. Included in the text is the treatment of various tracers, ranging from pathogens to stable isotopes of elements and providing a comprehensive discussion which is lacking in many other books on pollution control of natural waters. Geophysical processes are discussed emphasizing mixing of water, interaction between water and the atmosphere, and sedimentation processes. Important geochemistry processes occurring in natural waters are described as are the processes specific to nutrients, organic pollutants, metals, and pathogens in subsequent chapters. Each of these chapters includes an introduction on the selected groups, followed by the physicochemical properties which are the most relevant to their behavior in natural waters, and the theories and models to describe their speciation, transport and transformation. The book also includes the most up to date information including a discussion on emerging pollutants such as brominated and phosphate flame retardants, perflurochemicals, and pharmaceutical and personal care products. Due to its importance an ecotoxicology chapter has been included featuring molecular biological methods, nanoparticles, and comparison of the basis of biotic ligand model with the Weibull dose-response model. Finally, the last chapter briefly summarizes the regulations on ambient water quality.

This study examines vitamin A and E indices in fish collected from northern Alberta rivers, where fish are exposed to a variety of industrial effluents, as part of a multi-faceted study into altered fish physiological function due to environmental contaminants. The fish species targeted for collection were burbot, northern pike, and longnose sucker. The investigators conducted biochemical analyses in the laboratory to determine levels of retinol, dehydroretinol, retinyl palmitate (three storage forms of vitamin A), beta carotene (precursor form of vitamin A), and tocopherol in fish livers. For comparison, results are organised into reference (upstream locations and tributaries receiving no input from pulp mills), near-field (within 100 kilometres downstream from a pulp mill source), and far-field (over 100 kilometres downstream) groups, where sample sizes were adequate.

The workshop assembled experts from engineering, planning, economics, law, hydrology, aquatic ecology, geom- phology, and other disciplines to present research ?ndings and identify key new ideas on the urban water environment. At a lunch discussion near the end of the workshop, several of us came to the recognition that despite having considerable expertise in a narrow discipline, none of us had a vision of the “urban water en- ronment” as a whole. We were, as in the parable, blind men at opposite ends of the elephant, knowinga great deal about the parts, but notunderstandingthe whole. This report analyses the responses to the two sets of best/worst questions, using logistic regression. The analysis produced the following estimates: the probability that each of 11 possible threats to water quantity/quality will be selected as the area of most concern; and the probability of each of 11 possible management actions will be selected as the most effective response to such concerns. The probabilities produced by this analysis are ranked to determine the preferences of northern households and various stakeholder groups within the basin.
