Book Technological Change Industrial Restructuring and Regional Development

Download or read book Technological Change Industrial Restructuring and Regional Development written by Ash Amin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1986, this book was published at a time when the manufacturing structure of advanced economies was transformed. The growing internationalization of production, the rising power of giant corporations and the increasing rate of technological innovation remain key issues today. The impact of these changes is felt unevenly between regions, shown by huge job losses in some places and high-tech based growth in others. Drawing together contributions from economists, geographers, sociologists and management specialists, the problems facing the declining regions are discussed and analyzed. The book will be of interest to researchers, planners and policymakers concerned with the regional aspects of technological change and industrial restructuring.

Book Economy Without Walls

Download or read book Economy Without Walls written by Roger E. Hamlin and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1996-06-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have witnessed a revolution in the way economies work. The world has moved away from centralized governments and economies, toward decentralized governments and market-driven economies. A pragmatic, non-ideological approach to mixed economic systems is becoming the order of the day, blurring the lines between public and private, and referred to here as the economy without walls. The purpose of Hamlin and Lyons' new work is to synthesize an understanding of the economy without walls, distill the implications of this economy for local communities, and apply knowledge of those implications to guiding communities' development. The book assumes that the use of intersectoral partnerships is an important part of any urban or regional development strategy. It systematically describes such partnerships, including the philosophical foundations of this approach and the financial and non-financial activities used to implement it. The work then discusses trends in the theory and practice of local community management that result from this economic restructuring. The implications of the economy without walls cannot be ignored if urban planners and related professionals are to be effective in the new worldwide environment. This book will be a must-read for scholars, students, and practitioners in urban planning, economic development, and public administration.

Book Restructuring Regional and Local Economies

Download or read book Restructuring Regional and Local Economies written by George Blazyca and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. Throughout Western Europe and the former Soviet bloc, the structural shift from traditional heavy industry towards lighter manufacturing and services has often had a strong regional dimension. This volume brings together researchers and practitioners from Scotland and Poland to share such restructuring experiences. The Poles, now closer than ever to EU membership, are eager to draw on Western experience while Western experts and institutions have an opportunity to contribute to shaping regional policy in Central Europe. The book is divided into four sections: the first examines economic transformation and restructuring; the second focuses on social partnerships and their role in regional development; the third looks at enterprise-supporting initiatives; the final section questions the role of FDI. Its Scottish-Polish focus provides a fresh perspective on policy for regional and local development, summarising recent developments in both countries and stressing the importance of building appropriate institutional capacity to promote strong local economies.

Book Restructuring Industry and Territory

Download or read book Restructuring Industry and Territory written by Anna Giunta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the current trends in regional economic development in Europe, Restructuring Industry and Territory explores ways in which the restructuring of industry and territorial development relate to each other, their emergent interdependency and role in economic development. The book argues that the structural and cultural features of regions play an important part in helping or hindering concerted policies for regional development. Using case studies from different industries in a variety of regions, the contributors show that the pressures for restructuring, such as internationalisation or even 'globalisation', have been mediated by formerly nationally rooted industries in Europe becoming increasingly integrated, due to the ongoing processes of technological and organisational innovation, and political regulation.

Book Impact of State Restructuring on Indonesia s Regional Economic Convergence

Download or read book Impact of State Restructuring on Indonesia s Regional Economic Convergence written by Adiwan Fahlan Aritenang and published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc.. This book was released on 2017-03-09 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) in 1992 and decentralization in 1999 mark the state restructuring in Indonesia. This book analyses the impact of state restructuring on regional economic development in Indonesia between 1993 and 2010. Regional economic analysis shows persistent and severe regional disparities throughout the period. Particularly, econometrics study found that decentralization has accelerated regional disparities whilst the AFTA effect is insignificant on regional economic growth. Furthermore, historical institutionalism analysis on two cities - the manufacturing industry in Batam and the creative economy in Bandung - shows that past and embedded local institutions provide the capacity to adapt and create new development paths. The book suggests the importance of local-specific policies that embrace local knowledge and institutions to develop regional specialization and competitive advantage. This book fills the gap in Indonesian literature that lacks studies on the integrated impact of decentralization and trade liberalization, both economically and politically.

Book The New Regional Economies

Download or read book The New Regional Economies written by William R. Barnes and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1997-09-02 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, we take a nationalist view of our economy. Our politics and economics are wedded in the political economy of the nation state and the nationalist economic policies. This "nationalist paradigm" is, however, showing signs of fatigue: The role of the nation state is diminishing as the economy globalizes; our national accounting systems are less effective, technology forces change; trading blocs are emerging; there is less control of exchange rates; regional economies are restructuring; and competitive environments are changing. This book poses that political jurisdictions are not economies but polities, and explores the complex and important economic implications of this thesis. In reality, metropolitan-centered economic regions are the basic economic units and the building blocks of the U.S. economy. The linked, interdependent system of local economic regions form the U.S. Common Market, which in turn thrives within a global context of mutuality and interdependence. William R. Barnes and Larry C. LedeburÆs paradigm shift from the "nation as the economy" to the "national system of local economic regions" changes the framework in which we think about governance and policy and puts this book at the forefront of U.S. economic thought.

The distinguished contributors to this volume examine global economic dynamics and place these dynamics in their historical context. Throughout, specific studies present evidence and sketch the contours and dynamics of this new socio-territorial world. This exceptional work makes an important contribution to our understanding of both the processes of global restructuring and their consequences for urban and regional development. It will be essential reading for scholars and students in sociology, economics, political science, human geography, planning, urban and regional studies, and development studies.
