Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, market-centered economic reforms have been implemented in a wide range of developing and transitional countries under the auspices of the international financial institutions. Whether or not they deliver the promised prosperity, they appear to be associated with widening economic inequality as well as disadvantage for particular social groups, among them women and workers. "Recharacterizing Restructuring" argues that such effects are neither temporary nor accidental. Instead, efforts to promote growth through greater efficiency inevitably engage distributive concerns. Change in the status of different groups is connected to the process of legal and institutional reform. Part I analyzes the place of law and institutional reform in current economic restructuring policies. Through post-realist legal analysis and institutional economics, it discusses the role of background legal rules in the allocation of resources and power among different groups. Part II traces how disadvantage might result for women in the course of economic reform, through an analysis of the World Bank's proposals for states in transition from plan to market economies. It considers such foundational issues as the place of unpaid work in economic activity, as well as the gendered nature of proposals to re-organize productive activity and the role of the state.

Book Restructuring Schools

Download or read book Restructuring Schools written by W. Lowe Boyd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-17 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education reform has become part of a political imperative in a number of developed countries around the world. The simultaneous movement to reform schooling and the administrative structures which deliver educational services therefore needs to be studied in order to lay bare its fundamental assumptions. This movement has been labelled "restructuring" and "reform", although the words carry different meanings in different countries.; The authors question why this reconstruction occurred at the same time in different places. What common themes are emerging in the restructuring movement? And in the 1990s, where will the movement lead schooling and what essential changes will it effect? They explore these questions by examining developments in the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

Book Restructuring Economies in Distress

Download or read book Restructuring Economies in Distress written by Vinod Thomas and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1991 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1980 the World Bank began structural adjustment lending to its member governments to support broad economic, institutional, and policy reforms. To examine how well this form of lending has worked, this volume brings together leading practitioners and scholars from the World Bank and other financial institutions as well as from government and academia. Their assessments, based on theoretical and practical experience, contribute to the ongoing debate about how best to bring about macroeconomic stability. Case studies of nine countries under adjustment explore how well they complied with loan conditions and how their economies performed before, during, and after adjustment.

Book Economic Crisis and Corporate Restructuring in Korea

Download or read book Economic Crisis and Corporate Restructuring in Korea written by Stephan Haggard and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-02-26 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian business conglomerates have clearly been successful agents of growth, mobilizing capital, borrowing technology from abroad and spearheading Asia's exports. However, these firms have long had a number of organisational and financial weaknesses, including heavy reliance on debt, that make them vulnerable to shocks. Nowhere was this more true than in Korea, where the large corporate groups known as chaebol have dominated the economic landscape. This collection of essays by leading political scientists and economists provides a comprehensive look at the chaebol problem in the wake of the Asian financial crisis. The authors consider the historical evolution of the chaebol and their contribution to the onset of economic turmoil in 1997. The book analyses the government's short-run response to corporate and financial distress, and outlines an agenda for longer-term reform of the financial system, corporate governance and the politics of business-government relations.
