Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To progress successfully through all of their stages of development, children need to grow up in good communities. Good communities do not occur without viable, productive families. In Restoring Power to Parents and Places, author Richard Kordesh makes a compelling call for the productive familys renewal and provides creative steps for parents, professionals, and policymakers to take to strengthen communities around all children. Kordeshs experiences as a planner, professor, and father, have taught him that productive families are vitally important to the creation of good communities around children. He details historically, and with contemporary examples, the forces in our society that place stresses on families in all sectors. Restoring Power to Parents and Places presents a pointed critique of economic and political forces that have harmed families, but it also offers practical suggestions for action by parents, community leaders, community development and planning professionals, and governments at the local, state, and federal levels. Restoring Power to Parents and Places celebrates the productive potentials of a familys habitat, and it provides tools for empowering familiesgiving them more time and ability to raise their children.

Book This Is My Doctrine The Development of Mormon Theology

Download or read book This Is My Doctrine The Development of Mormon Theology written by Charles R. Harrell and published by Greg Kofford Books. This book was released on 2011-08-05 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal doctrines defining Mormonism today often bear little resemblance to those it started out with in the early 1830s. This book shows that these doctrines did not originate in a vacuum but were rather prompted and informed by the religious culture from which Mormonism arose. Early Mormons, like their early Christian and even earlier Israelite predecessors, brought with them their own varied culturally conditioned theological presuppositions (a process of convergence) and only later acquired a more distinctive theological outlook (a process of differentiation). In this first-of-its-kind comprehensive treatment of the development of Mormon theology, Charles Harrell traces the history of Latter-day Saint doctrines from the times of the Old Testament to the present. He describes how Mormonism has carried on the tradition of the biblical authors, early Christians, and later Protestants in reinterpreting scripture to accommodate new theological ideas while attempting to uphold the integrity and authority of the scriptures. In the process, he probes three questions: How did Mormon doctrines develop? What are the scriptural underpinnings of these doctrines? And what do critical scholars make of these same scriptures? In this enlightening study, Harrell systematically peels back the doctrinal accretions of time to provide a fresh new look at Mormon theology. “This Is My Doctrine” will provide those already versed in Mormonism’s theological tradition with a new and richer perspective of Mormon theology. Those unacquainted with Mormonism will gain an appreciation for how Mormon theology fits into the larger Jewish and Christian theological traditions.

Book Reinventing Paulo Freire

Download or read book Reinventing Paulo Freire written by Antonia Darder and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most influential critical educators of the twentieth century, Paulo Freire challenged those educational inequalities and conditions of injustice faced by oppressed populations. In this new edition of Reinventing Paulo Freire, Antonia Darder re-examines his legacy through reflections on Freirean pedagogy and the narratives of teachers who reinvent his work. The fully revised first part provides important historical, political, and economic connections between major societal concerns and educational questions raised by Freire and their link to the contemporary moment, including questions tied to neoliberalism, coloniality, and educational inequalities. At the heart of the book is a critical understanding of how Freire’s pedagogy of love can inform, in theory and practice, a humanizing approach to teaching and learning. Powerful teacher narratives offer examples of a living praxis, committed to democratic classroom life and the emancipation of subaltern communities. The narratives clearly illustrate how Freire’s ideas can be put concretely into practice in schools and communities. These reflections on Freirean praxis are sure to spark conversation and inspiration in teacher education courses. Through a close theoretical engagement of Freire’s ideas and key insights garnered from lived experiences, the book speaks to the ways Freire can still inspire contemporary educators to adopt the spirit of liberatory pedagogy, By so doing, Reinventing Paulo Freire is certain to advance his theories in new ways, both to those familiar with his work and to those studying Freire for the first time.

Book The Dynamics of Powerful Parenting

Download or read book The Dynamics of Powerful Parenting written by Raymond Messer and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dynamics of Powerful Parenting is a book about power, the power held by a parent to shape the development of a child, and the power of a child to either accept or reject those efforts. Often, when things are not working well for parents with their children, they will continue doing the same things, yet with ever more vigor. Usually, the result will be more of the same, only worse. A secret to understanding the dynamics of many human behaviors lies in the paradox of the Chinese Finger Puzzle (aka: Chinese Handcuff). The Chinese finger puzzle is a tube woven from bamboo shoots that is several inches long and about the diameter of a person's fingers; true to its nature, the tube will narrow as its ends are pulled. Thus, when the tube is slipped over the ends of fingers or thumbs on opposing hands, the subject's efforts to pull his or her fingers apart are met with increasing resistance from the device. So it is with much of being human. The thing that people wish to avoid most is the very thing that results from their efforts to do so. Dynamics is a book written with this paradox in mind. It is a book of insights about parenting that turns upside down many of the things that are currently held dear in "traditional" parenting efforts. It is a book that downplays the use of punishment, but never overlooks the need for discipline and responsibility. Dynamics encourages parents to think about what they are doing, how they are doing it, and what are they are experiencing as a result, then provides useful tools for changing undesired outcomes. It is a book that can produce positive results that will benefit generations yet unborn.
