Book Microbial Cell Walls and Membranes

Download or read book Microbial Cell Walls and Membranes written by H. R. Perkins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1968 when Cell Walls and Membranes was published it was still reasonable to attempt to write a book covering the whole subject. Accordingly this edition of the book had something to say about walls from micro-organisms and plants as well as about membranes from bacteria and animal cells. A decade later this is manifestly impossible. Knowledge about almost all the subjects has grown explosively, par ticularly about membranes and the biosynthesis of macromolecules. Moreover aspects of the subject that were still in a relatively primitive state ten years ago have grown into highly sophisticated subjects worthy of extended treatment. The result is that the present book has had to be confined to structures and functions relating to only one division of the biological kingdom, namely micro-organisms. Even then severe limitations have had to be made to keep the task within the time available to the authors and their expertise. A few of the titles of chapters such as those on the isolation of walls and membranes, the structure of the components of bacterial and micro-fungal walls and their biosynthesis remain from the earlier book. These chapters have been almost completely rewritten and a number of quite new chapters added on topics such as the action of the antibiotics that inhibit bacterial wall syn thesis, on the function of bacterial membranes, and the bacterial autolysins.

Book The Chemistry and Biochemistry of Nitrogen Fixation

Download or read book The Chemistry and Biochemistry of Nitrogen Fixation written by J. Postgate and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding of biological nitrogen fixation has advanced with impressive rapidity during the last decade. As befits a developing area of Science, these advances have uncovered information and raised questions which will have, and indeed have had, repercussions in numerous other branches of science and its applications. This 'information explosion', to use one of to-day's cant idioms, was initiated by the discovery, by a group of scientists working in the Central Research laboratories of Dupont de Nemours, U. S. A. , of a reproducibly active, cell-free enzyme preparation from a nitrogen fixing bacterium. Full credit is due to them. But subsequent developments, albeit sometimes quite as impressive, have too often been marked by that familiar disorder of a developing field of research-the scramble to publish. It is a scramble which, at its best, may represent a laudable desire to inform colleagues of the latest developments; yet which too easily develops into an undignified rush for priority, wherewith to impress one's Board of Directors or Grant-giving Institution. This, in miniature, is the tragedy of scientific research to-day: desire for credit causes research to be published in little bulletins, notes and preliminary communications, so that only those intimately involved in the field really know what is happening (and even they may well not see the forest for the trees). Those outside the field, or working in peripheral areas, may glean something of what is going on from reviews and fragments presented at meetings, but the broad pattern of development is often elusive.

Book Advances in Lipid Research

Download or read book Advances in Lipid Research written by Rodolfo Paoletti and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Lipid Research, Volume 6 provides information pertinent to brain cholesterol and myelin lipids. This book reviews the various aspects of the physiology, chemistry, and biochemistry of lipids. Organized into seven chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the separation of lipoproteins and discusses lipid metabolism in microorganisms. This text then provides a discussion of lipid metabolism in mycoplasmas. Other chapters consider the various aspects of metabolism of the lipid quinones and explore the relationship between lipids and atherosclerosis as a continuing source of biochemical, medical, and nutritional interest. This book discusses as well a comparative aspect of the development of atherosclerosis and explains the chemistry of bile acids. The final chapter deals with the aspects of steroid separations as well as with regard to separation of other metabolites that may influence lipid metabolism. This book is a valuable resource for biologists, biochemists, scientists, and research workers.

Book Bacterial Energetics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Terry Krulwich
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2012-12-02
  • ISBN : 0323145302
  • Pages : 582 pages

Download or read book Bacterial Energetics written by Terry Krulwich and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bacterial Energetics deals with bacterial energetics and the molecular basis of how ions move between and within energy-transducing molecules. Topics covered range from respiration-driven proton pumps and primary sodium pumps to light-driven primary ionic pumps, bacterial transport ATPases, and bacterial photosynthesis. Sodium-coupled cotransport and ion-exchange systems in prokaryotes are also considered. This volume is comprised of 17 chapters and begins with an analysis of the pumps and processes that establish electrochemical ion gradients across bacterial membranes, followed by a discussion on the major types of bioenergetic work that utilize these gradients. The energetics of periplasmic transport systems, chemolithotrophs, methanogens, and protein insertion and translocation into or across membranes are also examined, along with bioenergetics in extreme environments such as high-pressure and high-temperature environments; energetic problems of bacterial fermentations; energetics of bacterial motility; and energetics of the bacterial phosphotransferase system in sugar transport and the regulation of carbon metabolism. This book should be of interest to molecular biologists and biochemists.

Book Principles of Bioenergetics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Vladimir P. Skulachev
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-15
  • ISBN : 364233430X
  • Pages : 435 pages

Download or read book Principles of Bioenergetics written by Vladimir P. Skulachev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-15 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Bioenergetics summarizes one of the quickly growing branches of modern biochemistry. Bioenergetics concerns energy transductions occurring in living systems and this book pays special attention to molecular mechanisms of these processes. The main subject of the book is the "energy coupling membrane" which refers to inner membranes of intracellular organelles, for example, mitochondria and chloroplasts. Cellular cytoplasmic membranes where respiratory and photosynthetic energy transducers, as well as ion-transporting ATP-synthases (ATPases) are also part of this membrane. Significant attention is paid to the alternative function of mitochondria as generators of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that mediate programmed death of cells (apoptosis and necrosis) and organisms (phenoptosis). The latter process is considered as a key mechanism of aging which may be suppressed by mitochondria-targeted antioxidants.
