Download or read book Beyond MIDI written by Eleanor Selfridge-Field and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The establishment of the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) in the late 1980s allowed hobbyists and musicians to experiment with sound control in ways that previously had been possible only in research studios. MIDI is now the most prevalent representation of music, but what it represents is based on hardware control protocols for sound synthesis. Programs that support sound input for graphics output necessarily span a gamut of representational categories. What is most likely to be lost is any sense of the musical work. Thus, for those involved in pedagogy, analysis, simulation, notation, and music theory, the nature of the representation matters a great deal. An understanding of the data requirements of different applications is fundamental to the creation of interchange codes. The contributors to Beyond MIDI present a broad range of schemes, illustrating a wide variety of approaches to music representation. Generally, each chapter describes the history and intended purposes of the code, a description of the representation of the primary attributes of music (pitch, duration, articulation, ornamentation, dynamics, and timbre), a description of the file organization, some mention of existing data in the format, resources for further information, and at least one encoded example. The book also shows how intended applications influence the kinds of musical information that are encoded. Contributors David Bainbridge, Ulf Berggren, Roger D. Composing melodies is often thought of as a mysterious process—a lightning bolt of inspiration delivered by the songwriter's muse—but in fact melody is an art that can be learned, honed, and perfected. This book teaches that art in an engaging and thoroughly accessible fashion. Starting from basics, it covers the essentials—rhythm, intervals, scales, and harmony—and builds on these simple principles to offer a wealth of advanced techniques and tricks. Every musical example in the book is accompanied by a downloadable audio track, allowing songwriters to increase their understanding of melody through both sight and sound. How to Write Melodies is the only guide you’ll ever need for demystifying and perfecting the art of melody writing.

So we need to hack into the network to get the diamond's code." Larry paused, letting Tanner process what he had been told. "That's why you're here." Tanner Zane is a Mormon with a secret criminal past. Nobody suspects that before his religious conversion he had hacked into thousands of computer networks across the globe. But Tanner's guarded past is exposed when he's kidnapped and forced to hack into an impossible target—Los Alamos National Labs. Inside is a prototype quantum computer powerful enough to crack the digital safeguards of the Internet. When Tanner learns that cyber-terrorists will use it for massive identify theft and corporate espionage around the world, he deliberately engages in an intellectual battle with his captors to prevent them from obtaining the device. The Quantum Breach makes you wonder just what you would be willing to sacrifice in order to save the world.
