Book Response of Vegetation to Burning in a Subalpine Forest Cutblock in Central British Columbia

Download or read book Response of Vegetation to Burning in a Subalpine Forest Cutblock in Central British Columbia written by Evelyn Hope Hamilton and published by British Columbia, Forest Science Program. This book was released on 2003 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was undertaken to determine the response of individual vegetation species in the wet cold variant of the Engelmann spruce-subalpine fir biogeoclimatic zone of interior British Columbia after the trees were harvested and the site burned. Prescribed burning was carried out in the spring & fall to attempt to provide different fire severities. Changes in vegetation composition & structure after burning, tolerance of individual species to burning, mode of species establishment after burning, and changes in vegetation cover over time were monitored. Changes in height over time were also monitored for some shrub species. The study plots were monitored for 11 years after site preparation treatment. Results related to species response & diversity are presented & compared between burned and unburned plots.

Book excerpt: Fire effects, and vegetation and seedling response to burning, were monitored for 10 years after slashburning on the Goat River site. A fire weather station and gravimetric sampling were used to determine fire weather codes and indices and forest floor moisture content. Fuel loading, fuel consumption, and burn severity were ascertained using fuel assessment triangles and permanent plots. Changes in floristic composition and structure (cover and height) were documented along with survival and growth of planted hybrid white spruce seedlings. This technical report presents the 10-year results for the Goat River study.--Document.

Book Post fire Vegetation Development and Fire Effects in the SBS Zone

Download or read book Post fire Vegetation Development and Fire Effects in the SBS Zone written by Evelyn Hope Hamilton and published by British Columbia Ministry of Forests and Range Forest Scienc. This book was released on 2007 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The effects of clearcutting and slashburning on vegetation and soil composition and structure were monitored at permanent plots in the Prince George Forest District for up to 10 years post-burn. Changes in floristic composition, percent cover, and height were documented and described for each study area. At each site, standard fire weather stations were used to determine fire weather codes and indices and predict forest floor moisture content. Woody fuel loading and consumption and burn severity were determined using a line-intercept approach in standard fire effects assessment triangles and circular plots. Forest floor consumption, mineral soil exposure, and woody fuel consumption were compared to values predicted by the Prescribed Fire Predictor."--Document.

Book Succession After Slashburning in an Engelmann Spruce subalpine Fir Subzone Variant

Download or read book Succession After Slashburning in an Engelmann Spruce subalpine Fir Subzone Variant written by Evelyn Hope Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was undertaken to determine the successional development after a slashburn of known severity on an Engelmann Spruce-Subalpine Fir (ESSF) biogeoclimatic zone site. Herbaceous and shrubby vegetation composition, cover, and height were monitored along with the growth of planted spruce seedlings for 11 years in 30 permanent sample plots. Fire effects were determined using depth-of-burn pins to measure forest floor consumption and fuel assessment triangles to measure fuel loading and consumption following a microplot approach. Fire weather conditions were determined using standard methods outlined in the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index System. The objectives of this study were to quantify and describe changes in percent cover, height, species composition, and diversity of vegetation following prescribed burning; to quantify and describe the growth and mortality of planted hybrid white spruce (Picea engelmannii x glauca) seedlings after prescribed burning; and to quantify site conditions, including fire weather and forest floor moisture content, and fire effects, such as forest floor and slash consumption, at the time of burning.

Book Aquatic Dicotyledons of North America

Download or read book Aquatic Dicotyledons of North America written by Donald H. Les and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 1334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquatic Dicotyledons of North America: Ecology, Life History, and Systematics brings together a wealth of information on the natural history, ecology, and systematics of North American aquatic plants. Most books on aquatic plants have a taxonomic focus and are intended primarily for identification. Instead, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the biology of major aquatic species by compiling information from numerous sources that lie scattered among the primary literature, herbarium databases, and other reference materials. Included dicotyledon species are those having an obligate (OBL) wetland status, a designation used in the USACE National Wetland Plant List. Recent phylogenetic analyses are incorporated and rationale is provided for interpreting this information with respect to species relationships. This diverse assemblage of information will be useful to a wide range of interests including academic researchers, wildlife managers, students, and virtually anyone interested in the natural history of aquatic and wetland plants. Although focusing specifically on North America, the cosmopolitan distribution of many aquatic plants should make this an attractive text to people working virtually anywhere outside of the region as well. This book is an essential resource for assisting with wetland delineation.

Book Vegetation Response to Slashburning on Central Vancouver Island

Download or read book Vegetation Response to Slashburning on Central Vancouver Island written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report updates an ongoing study on the response of vegetation to slash burning. The project started in 1985 at an area on central Vancouver Island as a co-operative industry/government study to examine the effects of prescribed burning on tree growth & site nutrition. The area encompasses three recently-logged cutblocks with portions left unburned (control), burned in spring (low intensity), or burned in fall (high intensity). The report presents information collected during the fourth & sixth years after burning and examines post-treatment trends in vegetation development, including trends in vegetation species number, ground cover values, conifer cover, deciduous & evergreen shrub cover, and abundance of ferns & forbs.

Book Lodgepole Pine Responses to Mechanical Site Preparation and Burning in Sub boreal British Columbia

Download or read book Lodgepole Pine Responses to Mechanical Site Preparation and Burning in Sub boreal British Columbia written by John McClarnon and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1988, three studies were established as part of Experimental Project 995 to study lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia) survival and growth responses to site preparation in the Sub-Boreal Spruce zone of north-central British Columbia. The project examines the effectiveness of several mechanical treatments and localized high-intensity burning, with a focus on disc trenching, which is the most commonly used mechanical site preparation technique in this region. The importance of disc trench orientation, planting aspect, and planting position were investigated, as well as potential interactions between broadcast burning and disc trenching. This report presents 25-year results for the Bednesti North and Bednesti South experiments, and 19-year results for the Tanli experiment. Treatment effects are discussed in relation to: lodgepole pine establishment (survival and early growth to age 5); performance at approximately free-growing age (9 years); and early mid-term growth, stand volume, and site index (as measured at age 25). Of the mechanical treatments tested, coarse mixing was the most effective, resulting in approximately 1-m gains in lodgepole pine height over the control at age 25. This treatment is not practical from an operational perspective, however, and the more common technique of disc trenching with trees planted at the hinge produced the second greatest gains. In contrast, pine planted in trench furrows showed a trend of reduced growth relative to the control. Trench orientation was relatively unimportant, but there was a slight advantage to avoiding north-aspect planting positions. Although broadcast burning alone did not have a significant effect on pine growth, it consistently interacted with disc trenching to produce a mild magnification of responses to that treatment. Pine planted in long, narrow, intensely burned windrow strips were consistently larger than control pine throughout the 25-year assessment period, but they had poor form due to being essentially open-grown.
