Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sulphur is required by the plants in amounts similar to phosphorus (P) and is important in protein formation and other plant functions. It significantly influences yield and quality of crops, improves odor and flavors, and imparts resistance to cold, and hence it is generally considered as a 'quality nutrient'. Sulphur-deficient soils are widely distributed around the world. In the event of inadequate level of sulphur in soil, response of crops to other nutrients also declines. In addition, the imbalanced use of nitrogen and phosphorus in comparison to S, has widened, the N: S and P: S ratios in soil. Resultantly, the yield of oilseed crops, especially sunflower, is severely affected. Considering this aspect, a comprehensive case study was conducted to evaluate the response of sunflower to different sources and levels of sulphur in semi- arid Alfisol soils. The experiences documented in this book will be highly useful to Agricultural Scientists, Students, Land managers, NGOs, State Agricultural Departments, Agricultural Extension and Transfer of Technology Agencies, not only in India but also in other countries of the world with similar climatic and edaphic environments.

Book Response of Sunflower to Nitrogen Application Timing

Download or read book Response of Sunflower to Nitrogen Application Timing written by Muhammad Saleem Kubar and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sunflower is the second most important oil seed crop in the world. Nitrogen is the most of important nutrient for crop production and is required throughout the crop growth period from vegetative stage to subsequent harvesting. One of the main causes of low yield is imbalanced and inadequate supply of nutrients. Proper amount and time of fertilizer application is considered a key to the bumper crop. The most logical approach to increasing N fertilizer use efficiency is to supply nitrogen when it is needed by the crop. Use of optimum amount of fertilizer through a suitable application method at a time when it is most efficiently and effectively utilized is imperative. Plant N use efficiency can be improved by matching application rate and timing with plant demands. This study was proposed to investigate the effect of timing and nitrogen fertilizer application on growth and yield of sunflower.

Book Response of Sunflower to Sulphur and Sulphur Oxidizing Biofertilizer

Download or read book Response of Sunflower to Sulphur and Sulphur Oxidizing Biofertilizer written by Ashok Choudhary and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-16 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sunflower (Helianthus annuus), which used to be an ornamental plants in India, has in recent times become an important source of edible oil. Globally, sunflower ranks second to soybean among annual field crops grown for edible oil.It was introduced to India in 1969 as an oil seed crop. Since it is a photo-insensitive crop, it can be grown throughout the year. Our country is facing acute shortage of edible oils mainly because of heavy demand due to population pressure, raised standard of living and high demand from oil consuming industries. The demand is partly meet by home production of oil seed crop and partly by import of edible oils. Under such situation it needs to build up self sufficiency in oil production to meet the increasing demand of consumers. Sunflower is one of the potential oil seed crops which can meet to the situation.

Download or read book Sulphur in Plants written by Y.P. Abrol and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sulphur (S) plays a pivotal role in various plant growth and development processes being a constituent of sulphur-containing amino acids, cysteine and methionine, and other metabolites viz., glutathione and phytochelatins, co-factor of enzymes which contribute to stress repair and amelioration of heavy metal toxicity. Besides, a number of S-containing components are biologically active and, thus, a source for use as medicinal value. The basic global issue before the agricultural scientist and world community is to evolve cultivars and develop methodologies for efficient use of inputs to enhance agricultural productivity. This is particularly true of the developing countries which are going to see maximum rise in population with changing food demands and declining availability of land. Amongst the inputs, nutrients play a crucial role. The major requirement is for N, P and K followed by several micro-nutrients. In this context reports of world-wide S deficiency in the agricultural systems are relevant. The reasons are many. Broadly speaking reduction inS emission, use of S-free N, P and K fertilizers and higher biomass production contributed the maximum. Despite the need for sulphur as an essential plant nutrient and the substantial returns expected from its use, very little attention has been given to fill the gap between supply and demand of S.
