Book Herbicide Resistance in Weeds and Crops

Download or read book Herbicide Resistance in Weeds and Crops written by Zvonko Pacanoski and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2017-10-04 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbicides are the dominant technology and the most effective weed control tools ever developed that are used for the control of weeds that infest crops. Over the last several decades, in situations of intense herbicide usage, there have been many examples of the evolution of weed populations resistant to herbicides. Weed adaptations to management tactics, including biochemical mimicry in the form of evolved resistance to the herbicides used for weed control, have increased rapidly throughout agriculture and now threaten global food security. Nowadays, expended space of research activities remains to focus on the herbicide resistance to weeds and crops. The authors of Herbicide Resistance in Weeds and Crops cover various issues regarding the present relevant research.

Book Weed Science

Download or read book Weed Science written by Thomas J. Monaco and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2002-05-23 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The updated edition of the classic, fundamental book on weedscience Weed Science provides a detailed examination ofthe principles of integrated weed management with important detailson how chemical herbicides work and should be used. This revisedFourth Edition addresses recent developments affecting weedscience. These include the increased use of conservation-tillagesystems, environmental concerns about the runoff of agrochemicals, soil conservation, crop biotechnology, resistance of weeds andcrops to herbicides, weed control in nonagricultural settings andconcerns regarding invasive plants, wetland restoration, and theneed for a vastly improved understanding of weed ecology. Current management practices are covered along with guidance forselecting herbicides and using them effectively. To serve as a moreefficient reference, herbicides are cross-listed by chemical andbrand name and grouped by mechanism of action and physiologicaleffect rather than chemical structure. In addition, an introductionto organic chemistry has been added to familiarize readers withorganic herbicides. Also included are guidelines on weed-controlpractices for specific crops or situations, such as small grains, row crops, horticultural crops, lawns and turf, range land, brush, and aquatic plant life. Generously supplemented with 300 drawings, photographs, andtables, Weed Science is an essential book for students taking anintroductory course in weed science, as well as a reference foragricultural advisors, county agents, extension specialists, andprofessionals throughout the agrochemical industry.

Book Herbicide Classes in Development

Download or read book Herbicide Classes in Development written by Peter Böger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical pest control is in use in practically every country in the world since agrochemicals play a decisive role in ensuring food supply and protection against damage by pests, insects and pathogenic fungi. Particularly in the half century since World War II, food production has risen dramatically in most parts of the world. In the last 20 years, the yield of major crops has roughly doubled in Western agriculture and there is still the potential for further achievements, particularly in the developing countries. The world's cereal and rice production, now more than 2 billion tons/year, has to increase by 2. 4% annually to cope with the rising food demand caused mainly by the growing population and improvement of living standards in most of the developing countries. Such a demand for food has to be achieved by higher yields from the restricted arable land already in use. Global farm land resources are about 1. 4 billion ha, of which 1. 2 billion ha is cultivated with major crops. Experts agree that a future substantial addition of new produc tive areas is unlikely. Those with a high yield potential are already in use; new fields with a lower output may possibly be obtained by cultivation of arid or cold areas. More recently, new areas of large-scale farmland have been devel oped in tropical regions of Latin America, primarily in Argentina and Brazil, at the cost of the destruction of tropical rain forest.

Book Biochemistry and Physiology of Herbicide Action

Download or read book Biochemistry and Physiology of Herbicide Action written by Carl Fedtke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbicides are part of modern agricultural production systems and therefore contribute significantly to the economy of agricultural products. At the same time, herbicides are potent and specific inhibitors of plant metabolism and may therefore be used as valuable tools in basic plant physiological research. A well-known example is the photosynthesis-inhibiting herbicide diuron, known to plant physiologists as DCMU, which has become one of the essentials in modern photosynthesis research. Similarly, knowledge in other areas of plant metabolism may be advanced by the use of herbicides as specific inhibitors. This book describes the effects of herbicides on the metabolism of higher plants from the viewpoint of the plant physiologist. The material of this book is therefore, as far as possible, divided into areas of metabolism. This book intends (1) to present the reader with current knowledge and views in the area of herbicide modes of action and (2) to promote the future use of herbicides as metabolic inhibitors in plant physiological research to the advantage of both, the pesticide and the plant sciences.
