This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to its adaptation to extremely harsh environments, pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L) R. Br.) is one of the most important staple cereals cultivated in the arid and semi-arid tropics of Asia and Africa. In these regions pearl millet is mainly produced under low-input, rainfed conditions in traditional farming systems, where several constrains are affecting pearl millet production, such as inter-annual rainfall variability, pests, diseases, Striga and use of low yielding varieties. The majority of the human population in these regions is affected by nutritional deficiencies of essential minerals causing micronutrient malnutrition (so-called ‘hidden hunger’). Plant genetic resources provide basic materials for selection and improvement of crop productivity through the optimal design of breeding programs to meet food security needs of the world’s rapidly rising population. The advent of PCR-based molecular markers such as simple sequence repeats (SSRs) has created an opportunity for fine-scale genetic characterization of germplasm collections. Understanding the structure of diversity and the identification of distinct materials with complementary traits for recombination by crossing provides the foundation for effective and sustained pearl millet population breeding and synthetic and hybrid development, based on the concept of heterotic groups in this allogamous crop.

Book Response of Pearl Millet to Irrigation Nitrogen and Phosphorus

Download or read book Response of Pearl Millet to Irrigation Nitrogen and Phosphorus written by H. M. Bhuva and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-04 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br. emend. Stuntz] commonly known as bajra, is an important drought hardy millet crop basically cultivated in the arid and semi-arid areas on light textured sandy soils. It is a dual purpose crop, grains are used for human consumption and its fodder as cattle feed. Pearl millet grains are eaten cooked like rice or 'chapattis' are prepared out of flour like wheat or maize flour and also used as feed for poultry and green fodder or dry karbi for cattle. India is the largest producer of pearl millet with an annual production of 10.05 million tonnes from an area of 8.69 million ha and productivity of 1156 kg ha-1. Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are the major pearl millet growing states. Scientific scheduling of irrigation is a technique for determining the quantity of irrigation water, which also aim at optimizing crop yield with the maximum water use efficiency and ensures minimum deterioration of the soil and crop.

Book Pearl Millet in the 21st Century

Download or read book Pearl Millet in the 21st Century written by Vilas A Tonapi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2024-01-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the global pearl millet research for achieving the sustainable development goals in the eve of International Year of Millets in 2023 by FAO. This book offers perspectives on the recent advances in the field of genomics, next-generation breeding approaches, hybrid development, crop production and protection technologies of pearl millets. Pearl millet is the world’s most important millet grown in the hot, semi-arid ecologies of Asia and Africa with versatile end uses. Of all the world’s cereals, pearl millet ranks the sixth most important crop after rice, wheat, maize, barley and sorghum. In the changing climatic condition, it can be pitched as strategic crop for food and nutritional security owing to its ability to survive in harsh ecologies and the higher micro-nutrients grain content. This books focuses on nutritional importance, climate resilience, seed systems, value-addition and market policies to enhance the genetic gain of pearl millets under marginal and favorable ecologies, and way forward for a food and nutrition secure world. It is a useful reading material for researchers and professionals working on small grains, millets and their cultivation and nutrition related aspects.
