Book Introduction to Black Swan Theory

Download or read book Introduction to Black Swan Theory written by IntroBooks Team and published by IntroBooks. This book was released on 2019-12-04 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 9/11 to the Recession of 2007, these are events that have scared history and the United States of America. They were unprecedented by the people of those days, yet, we look back at those events and saw the impending signs of what was to happen. Nassim Nicholas Taleb accounted for these events and our perspectives today as the Black Swan Theory. Much like how what seemed to be the norm and logical answer to the question: “what’s the color of a swan?” and then baffled by the discovery of black swans in Western Australia, people did not see these events coming. In fact, they seemed to have deluded, biased, believed that there was no way a war can break out in a civilized world. That there will be no more events matching the Great Depression and that nuclear war is only a story in American fiction movies.

Download or read book The Black Swan written by Nassim Nicholas Taleb and published by Random House Digital, Inc.. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the author's point of view, a black swan is an improbable event with three principal characteristics - It is unpredictable; it carries a massive impact; and, after the fact, we concoct an explanation that makes it appear less random, and more predictable, than it was. Why do we not acknowledge the phenomenon of black swans until after they occur? Part of the answer, according to Taleb, is that humans are hardwired to learn specifics when they should be focused on generalities. We concentrate on things we already know and time and time again fail to take into consideration what we don't know. We are, therefore, unable to truly estimate opportunities, too vulnerable to the impulse to simplify, narrate, and categorize, and not open enough to rewarding those who can imagine the 'impossible'.

Book Summary of The Black Swan

Download or read book Summary of The Black Swan written by and published by Mind B. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary of The Black Swan - a black swan is an extremely unlikely incident with three main characteristics: It's unpredictable; it has a significant impact; and, after the event, we construct an explanation that makes it appear less random and more predictable than it actually was. Google's meteoric rise, as 9/11, were black swan events. Black swans underpin essentially everything in our world, from the formation of religions to personal events. This summary will show you the main ideas of the book. Why do we wait until black swans appear before acknowledging their existence? Part of the answer is that humans are built to learn specifics when they should be learning generalities. We tend to focus on what we already know and frequently overlook what we don't know. As a result, we are unable to accurately assess opportunities, are too prone to the urge to simplify, narrate, and categorize, and are unable to reward people who can envision the "impossible." Book excerpt: All it took was one. One black swan changed people's minds forever. The Black Swan Effect presents a vision for what can happen as men and women work together in the Kingdom of God. The authors (both male and female) encourage men to champion women as equal co-laborers and partners in the harvest. They give women permission and inspiration to follow the Lord—to reach their own full potential and encourage others to fulfill God's call. The Black Swan Effect equips both men and women to bring an informed and positive contribution to the increasingly crucial conversation on gender in the church. If you are like most Christians, one of three primary motivations propels you into this discussion about women in ministry: • Many Christians have come to the conclusion that there is no better way to increase the size of God's missions workforce than to fully deploy women to use their spiritual gifts and God-given capacities. • Some are asking theological questions. They are investigating how the Bible portrays women, especially women leaders. How did Jesus treat women? Were the New Testament writers—in particular, the apostle Paul—misogynists? Are there alternative interpretations for some of the really difficult passages of Scripture? • Others are drawn to this discussion because of issues related to justice and human dignity around the world as well as in the church. As they study Scripture, they are assured that God creates all men and women in his image, and they can't even imagine a God who would discriminate against women. Fourteen different authors contribute to these themes, each writing from their own area of passion and expertise, the whole being woven together into a single narrative. Encouraging stories of women who are doing marvelous things for God today accompany each chapter. Change is coming! Let's get ready.

Book Black Swan Events on NATO s Eastern Flank

Download or read book Black Swan Events on NATO s Eastern Flank written by S. Ducaru and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ‘Black Swan’ event is defined as an event with an exceptional or extraordinary character representing a surprise for the observer; one which has a wide impact and highlights something that has been neglected by observers in understanding what was critical in their system, procedure or unit. This book presents material from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop Black Swans on the Eastern Flank, held in Bucharest, Romania, on 18 and 19 April 2018. The workshop was designed as a response to the need to develop agile situational awareness and analysis capabilities and skills, correlated with horizon-scanning and strategic anticipation initiatives, and was conducted with particular reference to the Balkan and Black Sea regions and in the context of the broader destabilization and destructuring trends of the international security order, the challenges posed by increasing terrorism, the escalating dynamic of cyber-attack and information manipulation, and so called hybrid tactics, together with the broader impact of new technologies on security. Two situations were presented by each participating country to generate an analysis framework for the unexpected and challenging events for each state in the region; the situations likely to become their ‘Black Swans’ between 2018-2020. The discussions during this Advanced Research Workshop highlighted the nature of the scenarios, their probability, impact and the means to tackle each situation, and the book aims to provide an instrument to better prepare the systemic prevention and response, and will be essential reading for anyone interested in potential future crises in this vulnerable part of Europe.

Book Stalking the Black Swan

Download or read book Stalking the Black Swan written by Kenneth A. Posner and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-31 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kenneth A. Posner spent close to two decades as a Wall Street analyst, tracking the so-called "specialty finance" sector, which included controversial companies such as Countrywide, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, CIT, and MasterCard many of which were caught in the subprime mortgage and capital markets crisis of 2007. While extreme volatility is nothing new in finance, the recent downturn caught many off guard, indicating that the traditional approach to decision making had let them down. Introducing a new framework for handling and evaluating extreme risk, Posner draws on years of experience to show how decision makers can best cope with the "Black Swans" of our time. Posner's shrewd assessment combines the classic fundamental research approach of Benjamin Graham and David Dodd with more recent developments in cognitive science, computational theory, and quantitative finance. He outlines a probabilistic approach to decision making that involves forecasting across a range of scenarios, and he explains how to balance confidence, react accurately to fast-breaking information, overcome information overload, zero in on the critical issues, penetrate the information asymmetry shielding corporate executives, and integrate the power of human intuition with sophisticated analytics. Emphasizing the computational resources we already have at our disposal our computers and our minds Posner offers a new track to decision making for analysts, investors, traders, corporate executives, risk managers, regulators, policymakers, journalists, and anyone who faces a world of extreme volatility.

Book The Black Swan Second Edition

Download or read book The Black Swan Second Edition written by Nassim Nicholas Taleb and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most influential book of the past seventy-five years: a groundbreaking exploration of everything we know about what we don’t know, now with a new section called “On Robustness and Fragility.” A black swan is a highly improbable event with three principal characteristics: It is unpredictable; it carries a massive impact; and, after the fact, we concoct an explanation that makes it appear less random, and more predictable, than it was. The astonishing success of Google was a black swan; so was 9/11. For Nassim Nicholas Taleb, black swans underlie almost everything about our world, from the rise of religions to events in our own personal lives. Why do we not acknowledge the phenomenon of black swans until after they occur? Part of the answer, according to Taleb, is that humans are hardwired to learn specifics when they should be focused on generalities. We concentrate on things we already know and time and time again fail to take into consideration what we don’t know. We are, therefore, unable to truly estimate opportunities, too vulnerable to the impulse to simplify, narrate, and categorize, and not open enough to rewarding those who can imagine the “impossible.” For years, Taleb has studied how we fool ourselves into thinking we know more than we actually do. We restrict our thinking to the irrelevant and inconsequential, while large events continue to surprise us and shape our world. In this revelatory book, Taleb will change the way you look at the world, and this second edition features a new philosophical and empirical essay, “On Robustness and Fragility,” which offers tools to navigate and exploit a Black Swan world. Taleb is a vastly entertaining writer, with wit, irreverence, and unusual stories to tell. He has a polymathic command of subjects ranging from cognitive science to business to probability theory. Elegant, startling, and universal in its applications, The Black Swan is a landmark book—itself a black swan.
