Book A Nationwide Framework for Surveillance of Cardiovascular and Chronic Lung Diseases

Download or read book A Nationwide Framework for Surveillance of Cardiovascular and Chronic Lung Diseases written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic diseases are common and costly, yet they are also among the most preventable health problems. Comprehensive and accurate disease surveillance systems are needed to implement successful efforts which will reduce the burden of chronic diseases on the U.S. population. A number of sources of surveillance data-including population surveys, cohort studies, disease registries, administrative health data, and vital statistics-contribute critical information about chronic disease. But no central surveillance system provides the information needed to analyze how chronic disease impacts the U.S. population, to identify public health priorities, or to track the progress of preventive efforts. A Nationwide Framework for Surveillance of Cardiovascular and Chronic Lung Diseases outlines a conceptual framework for building a national chronic disease surveillance system focused primarily on cardiovascular and chronic lung diseases. This system should be capable of providing data on disparities in incidence and prevalence of the diseases by race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and geographic region, along with data on disease risk factors, clinical care delivery, and functional health outcomes. This coordinated surveillance system is needed to integrate and expand existing information across the multiple levels of decision making in order to generate actionable, timely knowledge for a range of stakeholders at the local, state or regional, and national levels. The recommendations presented in A Nationwide Framework for Surveillance of Cardiovascular and Chronic Lung Diseases focus on data collection, resource allocation, monitoring activities, and implementation. The report also recommends that systems evolve along with new knowledge about emerging risk factors, advancing technologies, and new understanding of the basis for disease. This report will inform decision-making among federal health agencies, especially the Department of Health and Human Services; public health and clinical practitioners; non-governmental organizations; and policy makers, among others.

Book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease

Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Book Respiratory Disease

Download or read book Respiratory Disease written by Sarah Seth and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-03-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the intricate symphony of life, few things are as vital as the breath we take. From the first inhalation at birth to the steady rhythm of respiration sustaining our existence, the respiratory system serves as the silent conductor of our survival. Yet, behind this seemingly effortless act lies a complex network of organs, tissues, and processes working tirelessly to ensure the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, the lifeblood of our physiology. Welcome to the fascinating world of respiratory health, where every breath tells a story of resilience, adaptation, and the delicate balance between vitality and vulnerability. At its core, the respiratory system embodies the remarkable synergy between structure and function, seamlessly integrating intricate anatomy with dynamic physiology to meet the demands of life. From the moment air enters the nostrils, it embarks on a journey through the nasal passages, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and bronchial tree, traversing a labyrinth of airways meticulously designed to filter, humidify, and warm each breath before it reaches the lungs. Here, within the intricate architecture of the alveoli, gas exchange takes place, as oxygen diffuses across the thin membranes of the pulmonary capillaries into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide makes its journey in the opposite direction, destined for expulsion into the atmosphere. But the respiratory system's role extends far beyond mere gas exchange; it serves as the frontline defense against airborne pathogens, allergens, and environmental pollutants, safeguarding our bodies against external threats. Specialized cells lining the airways produce mucus and cilia that trap and remove foreign particles, while the immune system stands ready to mount a swift and coordinated response to invaders. Yet, in this ongoing battle for respiratory health, the system is not immune to compromise, as infections, pollutants, and genetic predispositions can disrupt its delicate equilibrium, leading to a myriad of respiratory diseases and disorders. From the common cold to chronic conditions like asthma, COPD, and lung cancer, respiratory diseases pose significant challenges to global health, affecting millions of individuals worldwide and imposing a substantial burden on healthcare systems. The prevalence of respiratory ailments underscores the importance of understanding their underlying mechanisms, risk factors, and treatment strategies, as well as the critical role of prevention and lifestyle modifications in mitigating their impact. In this exploration of respiratory health, we embark on a journey through the intricate web of airways, alveoli, and pulmonary vasculature, delving into the mysteries of lung function, respiratory diseases, and the remarkable resilience of the human body. From the latest advancements in medical research to practical tips for optimizing lung health, join us as we unravel the complexities of breathing and celebrate the profound significance of each breath we take. Welcome to the world of respiratory health-a testament to the extraordinary power of life, breath, and the indomitable spirit of human physiology.
