Book Respiration Classic Reprint

Download or read book Respiration Classic Reprint written by J. S. Haldane and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Respiration When Yale University invited me to deliver the Silliman Lectures for 1915 I was asked to deal with the physiology of breathing and include a general account Of the long series of investigations with which I had been associated on this subject and its practical applications in clinical medicine and hygiene. Owing to the war I was unable to give the lectures in 1915, but in 1916 delivered four lectures which dealt only with some Of the more general conclu sions to which I had been led, and were published early in 1917 by the Yale University Press under the title Organism and Environment as Illustrated by the Physiology Of Breathing. The war has greatly delayed the appearance Of the present book, which treats the physiology Of breathing fully in accordance with the original plan. I have, however, abandoned the lecture form, and what I had written four years ago has had to be largely recast owing to the rapid advance Of knowledge. The book is not a mere compilation, but contains much that has never previously been published, and is an attempt to give a coherent statement and interpretation Of what is known Of the subject at present. I fear that I may sometimes have unwittingly overlooked Observa tions by others which would have added completeness to my account. Yet I hope that what may have been lost in this way will be made up for by the fact that the book embodies the results Of a continuous series Of investigations leading to very definite and consistent conclusions. About the middle Of last century the younger physiologists broke away from the vitalistic traditions which had been handed down to them, and set about to investigate living organisms piece by piece, precisely as they would investigate the working of a complex mechanism. This method seemed to them to promise success, and was popularized by such masters Of clear and force ful expression as Huxley. It is still the orthodox method Of physi ology, but the Old confidence in it has steadily diminished in proportion as exact experimental investigation has shown that the various activities Of a living organism cannot be interpreted in isolation from one another, since organic regulation dominates them. The keynote of this book is the organic regulation Of breathing and its associated phenomena. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Kostychev s Plant Respiration

Download or read book Kostychev s Plant Respiration written by Sergei Kostychev and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kostychev's Plant Respiration: Authorized Edition in English With Editorial Notes A new period in the investigation of plant respiration began with the opening of the twentieth century. The discovery of cell free alcoholic fermentation, a process not accomplished by purely chemical means, suggested that material transformations which underlie normal plant respiration could possibly be detached from the living substance. Soon after in fact, W. Palladin and his coworkers as well as the author of this book succeeded in proving for killed plants an enzymatic metabolism completely analogous to oxygen respiration.1 This condition meant, inasmuch as it was later established beyond doubt, that the respiratory metabolism is not to be conceived as a resultant of heterogenous reactions which take place in the protoplasm, but as a chemical process which actually consists of inter mediate steps and which is always uniform. It is only in this, light that a chemical investigation of the material transforma tions which take place in respiration appears possible and practical. For example, how could one raise even the first basic questions of the respiratory material if respiration were not an independent process? Book The Respiratory Exchange of Animals and Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Respiratory Exchange of Animals and Man Classic Reprint written by August Krogh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Respiratory Exchange of Animals and Man The subject of Physiological Chemistry, or Biochemistry, is enlarging its borders to such an extent at the present time, that no single text-book upon the subject, without being cumbrous, can adequately deal with it as a whole, so as to give both a general and a detailed account of its present position. It is, moreover, difficult, in the case of the larger text-books, to keep abreast of so rapidly growing a science by means of new editions, and such volumes are therefore issued when much of their contents has become obsolete. For this reason, an attempt is being made to place this branch of science in a more accessible position by issuing a series of monographs upon the various chapters of the subject, each independent of and yet dependent upon the others, so that from time to time, as new material and the demand therefor necessitate, a new edition of each mono graph can be issued without reissuing the whole series. In this way, both the expenses of publication and the expense to the purchaser will be diminished, and by a moderate outlay it will be possible to Obtain a full account of any particular subject as nearly current as possible. The editors of these monographs have kept two objects in View: firstly, that each author should be himself working at the subject with which he deals; and, secondly, that a as complete as possible, should be included, in order to avoid cross references, which are apt to be wrongly cited, and in order that each monograph may yield full and independent information of the work which has been done upon the subject. It has been decided as a general scheme that the volumes first issued shall deal with the pure chemistry of physiological products and with certain general aspects of the subject. Subsequent monographs will be devoted to such questions as the chemistry of special tissues and particular aspects of metabolism. So the series, if continued, will proceed from physiological chemistry to what may be now more properly termed chemical physiology. This will depend upon the success which the first series achieves, and upon the divisions of the subject which may be of interest at the time. Book Respiration Calorimeters for Studying the Respiratory Exchange and Energy Transformations of Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book Respiration Calorimeters for Studying the Respiratory Exchange and Energy Transformations of Man Classic Reprint written by Francis G. Benedict and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Respiration Calorimeters for Studying, the Respiratory Exchange and Energy Transformations of Man The immediate development and construction of suitable apparatus for studying the complicated processes of metabolism in man was obviously the first task in equipping the Nutrition Laboratory. As several series of experiments have already been made with these respiration calorimeters, it is deemed advisable to publish the description of the apparatus as used at present. New features in the apparatus are, however, frequently introduced as opportunity to increase accuracy or facilitate manipulation is noted. We wish here to express our sense of obligation to the following associates: Mr. W. E. Collins, mechanician of the Nutrition Laboratory, constructed the structural steel framework and contributed many mechanical features to the apparatus as a whole; Mr. J. A. Riche, formerly associated with the researches in nutrition in the chemical laboratory of Wesleyan University, added his previous experience in constructing and installing the more delicate of the heating and cooling devices. Others who have aided in the painstaking construction, testing, and experimenting with the apparatus are Messrs. W. H. Leslie, L. E. Emmes, F. L. Dorn, C. F. Clark, F. A. Renshaw, H. A. Stevens, Jr., Miss H. Sherman, and Miss A. Johnson. The numerous drawings were made by Mr. E. H. Metcalf, of our staff. Book Therapeutics of the Respiratory System

Download or read book Therapeutics of the Respiratory System written by M. W. Van Denburg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Therapeutics of the Respiratory System: Cough and Coryza, Acute and Chronic; Repertory With Index, Materia Medica With Index The primary objects of this book are to save time and to render the work of the physician more efficient. It saves time by bringing together all the drugs applicable to a given case; it renders the work of the therapeutist more efficient by enabling him to select with greater precision the drug he will use. The foundation of the Materia Medica herein set forth is Hering's Guiding Symptoms, the entire ten volumes of which have been carefully consulted from cover to cover, _ and the most prominent, striking and peculiar symptoms noted, as well as those that most strongly and clearly indicate the drug. The following paragraphs in Hering's Guiding Symptoms have been carefully reviewed. No. 1, Mind; No. 7, Nose; No. 12, Mouth; No. 13, Palate and Throat; No. 25, Larynx and Bronchi; No. 26, Respiration; No. 27, Cough; No. 28, Inner Chest and Lungs; No. 29, Heart, Pulse, and Circulation. By consulting these sections one will see how much labor was necessary to condense and choose. This may not always have been done with the best judgment; but if anyone will try his hand on one full drug, he will have a better basis for judging of the work as a whole. Moreover, the study of the transformations of matter is rendered more complete and intelligible by a knowledge of the transformations of energy. Book My Breathing System Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Breathing System Classic Reprint written by J. P. Muller and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Breathing System It may be a matter of surprise to some that I should add yet another volume to the already lengthy catalogue of booklets on The Art of Breathing. In justification I must state that my first reason is, that I have hitherto found all such works to be too much of the nature of text-books on the so-called art; hence it is now my ambition to bring forward the commonsense book on breathing. And my second reason is that, notwithstanding the scores of older books on breathing, we still meet thousands of persons who are unable to breathe properly - not only children and women, but even sportsmen, singers and scientific men. And thousands and thousands still die of consumption, notwithstanding the fact that this could be prevented merely by teaching the children proper breathing. There is, therefore, still much to be done in this direction. If my booklet contains some repetitions, they are only those which are intentional and such as are always allowed in conveying important advice. I have done my best to write it in the same simple style which has made my former books so popular amongst the general public. I must admit, however, that I fear I may have failed in this respect in the chapter concerning the diaphragm, which contains much professional technicality of language. My only excuse for this is that, during my studies and practical investigations, it struck me that many of the theories of science on that subject were erroneous, and I succumbed to the temptation of proving this to be the case. It has always been my habit to see with my own eyes and think with my own brain, instead of trusting to a long succession of authorities, each of whom has quoted from his predecessor, whilst the original one may have been unworthy of credit. This book has not been translated from the Danish, but has been written by myself in the English language. It is hardly necessary to say that the diction has been corrected and improved by my good friends, Mr. Ernest Gunton and Mr. H. R. Murray, to whom my Publishers entrusted this work. I take this opportunity of tendering to them my most cordial thanks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
